on seattle viking game I thought wilson went down to one knee on the bad snap - that pass turned the game around for seattle and did for denver too. I thought they were both down.

This is another one of those instances, where the NFL has created a rule that ends up causing confusion. There didn't used to be any "giving oneself up" rule, and such a rule is open to serious interpretation, just like a 'catch" has become, as well as Pass Interference.

Is it wrong that I hope Talib give Brady a Three Stooges Eye-Poke Special? kidding but I do hope VonMiller and Ware make him a permanent part of their field from all of the sacks!

I didn't get that he was saying he got away with one. he said he didn't think the guy touched him and he slipped.

I am not for making to many new rules, but if the NFL is concerned with QB safery, they should institute a rule that if a QB goes down to the ground, and his knee to hes, he is deemed down at the spot, touched our not. Manning did his patented give up slide/drop, and herd no whistle, so he got up and threw it. If one of our D men were to have cleaned ho's clock at that point, oh the hell thst would have come down from the league office

I read that as Manning being embarrassed because it was awkward looking... which it really was.

What's bad about the Steelers defense is that no defender got to him while he was down .

    Will Allen was trying.

Watching it in real-time and slow-motion, and in the cooler light of today: it's still fairly clear that Manning slid (as in: QB slide) and didn't slip. You can see him tuck that leg, just like a guy sliding, and the rest of his body fold just as it should. He went down and was NOT struggling to get up again, like a guy who slipped would've. Instead, he pauses for a second, then gets up and throws. I have to think he slid, heard no whistle, and just got up and looked to his favorite target (Sanders, who was WIDE-OPEN).

Wonder why the ref was out of position to notice the block in the back......

That's just it, it's a double-edged sword. More than half the playing field thought the play was dead and stopped, because it was the QB and he was on the ground. Some saw him give himself up; others didn't. They just saw him down and assumed it was over. Probably rightfully so because of all the QB-centric player safety messages being put out by the league. But if someone came in and hit him while on the ground he probably draws a flag.

It was just a weird situation that probably should've been blown dead by the officials.

This sums it up well for me.

Ultimately, you have to play to the whistle, which we didn't, so that's that.

But given how quickly they've blown plays dead in other situations makes this problematic.

Wouldn't have taken a tackle, just a tap on the back - that's how they down a QB making a hook-slide anyway. But Allen was out of position to do that by the time Manning got to his feet and threw and there was a DL moving towards him (don't remember who). Just one of those plays. No matter how much it hurts, it was a valid call.

He didnt need to be touched, he gave him self up when he slid down, and tomlin thought so as well when he questioned the refs about it, a player doesn't have to be touched when they give them selves up, in fact if one of our players had drilled him while he was down we would have been flagged for roughing the QB.....

Minus formatting issues, here is the rule....seems pretty clear cut. Only argument could be thatPeyton got an exemption on the play..... period. He fell to avoid being hit, gave himself up. In the end the only thing that mattered was field position, but I still think the Owen Daniels block in the back would have pushed them back even further..... and maybe Toussaint doesn't fumble on the next position. Woulda coulda shoulda.

    (d) when a runner declares himself down by:

    (1) falling to the ground, or kneeling, and clearly making no immediate effort to advance

    (2) sliding feet-first on the ground. When a runner slides feet first, the ball is dead the instant he touches the ground with anything other than his hands or his feet

    Notes:

    (1) Defenders are required to treat a sliding runner as they would a runner who is down by contact.
    (2) A defender must pull up when a runner begins a feet-first slide. This does not mean that all contact by a defender iillegal. If a defender has already committed himself, and the contact is unavoidable, it is not a foul unless the defender commits some other act, such as helmet-to-helmet contact or by driving his forearm or shoulder into the head or neck area of the runner.
    (3) A runner who desires to take advantage of this protection is responsible for starting his slide before contact by a defensive player is imminent; if he does not, and waits until the last moment to begin his slide, he puts himself in jeopardy of being contacted.

It's pretty sad when even the refs don't know the rules. Or are they hoping nobody else knows them?
