    Nice post

    Questions though

    Cut Heath? I'd hate too
And we gonna have to pay bell and brown something right?
Or will brown play for free again next year?

Good stuff, RPO. I like the idea of rolling the dice on Claiborne too. Any FA safeties you like?

I would definitely cut Heath. 7 million in cap space is simply not worth what he brings. His legs are gone. In our zone blocking system he simply fails to often to reach or sustain his blocks. In the passing game, he's nothing more than a short yardage TE who can sit down in a zone.

We've cut Ward, Harrison, etc. We know how to take the emotion out of these moves. He's the greatest TE in team history, but he's done.

With regards to Bell. I want to see what he does coming off the ACL. Dwill showed why the RB position has been devalued league wide.

Brown is under contract for 2 more seasons.

Interesting. I did quite a bit of what you did when playing around on overthecap. I have to think about it in more detail, but I'm probably in agreement with you on at least 80% of those moves.

Can I have Jalen Ramsey lol....

I have my eye on a few guys in the draft. Darian Thompson is a guy I would target. I believe our safeties become more interchangeable as we continue becoming more of a cover 2 team. I think Mitchell had a fantastic year, but I don't view him as a pure FS. I think a guy like Thompson would add much needed range and ballskills to our backend.

I'd love to sign Eric Berry, but i think he's going to be out our range.
I've been a fan of Eric Weddle for quit a long time, but his age and projected contract is not where I'd invest.

If say, we only signed one of those 2 corners... I'd make a run at isa abdul-quddus, I think he's very underrated. It's so hard to project safety contracts. He's only 26, and I think he's a bit of an unknown stud.

Unfortunately I think you're spot on regarding Miller. His best days as pass catcher and run blocker are long gone. I don't know how many times he's completely whiffed his block on screens, but it's time to move on. With that being said they'll have to address the position via the draft and free agency if he is cut. We've got James and basically nothing else. I tend to think Spaeth is in the same boat, just a shell of his former self as a run blocker.

RPO nice post. I'm on board with everything you stated. One thing I might look at is not extending Timmons. Maybe or maybe not by not extending it will allow us to keep our receivers intact and/or giving AB a new deal since I think there may be a chance he could hold out by camp.

I think Spaeth's length has allowed him to remain an above the line edge blocker. Given his contract, I'm comfortable with him for 1 more year as a blocking 2/3 TE.

This may sound... silly... but I was a big fan of Blanchflower coming out. He was my continuous plug in 7th round mock choice. I think he's as good as any other fill in blocking TE. I'm really not that concerned with the TE position. I like James a lot, I am looking forward to competition at the spot in camp. Sure, we can draft a late rounder... or we can kick the can on some 2nd/3rd tier free agents.

Im looking at the Timmons externsion only if he's willing to take a "Steelers deal". Basically converting a big chuck of his final year salary to signing bonus. Then adding an additional year or 2 without any additional guaranteed money. Essentially what we did with Heath and Troy.

I don't think we are ready to lose Timmons.

As a side note. I should also point out that in my hypothetical offseason plan, I would NOT pick up Jarvis Jones 5th year option

Hard to disagree with anything that you're proposing. I'm kind of choking on the thought of losing Miller's mature veteran presence, but I agree he costs more than his value if (and its a big if) James is the guy you and I both seem to think he is. He wasn't on my draft radar, but after we drafted him I went back and watched and felt that he was much better than a 6th round prospect. I think Timmons will be a bit more expensive than what your suggesting, but hopefully we can keep him with a reasonable deal. I also think that if we can find a way to extend Brown in a manner that's mutually beneficial, we should do it.

On the new free agent front - agree that Janoris Jenkins would be a good catch. I think I like his teammate Trumaine Johnson as much or more. I would love to go after George Iloka at the SS position. I think he's a solid player, and is still improving.

Good call, I really like Trumaine Johnson as a potential FA target also.

There isn't a snowball's chance in hell Jones's fifth year option gets picked up. If I remember correctly it's the average of the top 10 at his position or some such nonsense(somewhere around 8-9million). He just simply isn't worth it. It sucks they whiffed on him so badly, but at this point there's no use in crying over spilt milk

No way in hell would I give Claiborne 30 million, Janoris Jenkins or Trumaine Johnson maybe also draft a capable CB.

Don't be surprise to see Eric Weddle here next season. Tomlin has a man crush on him, and he would jump at the chance to be here!

can we wait till after draft to decide on heath and still save? the reason I ask is I have seen hunter henry te from Arkansas linked to us as potential replacement to heath. I would still love to have him for another season

Good post, more needed like that. I need to think about it a little but I am like others
80% of it looks good. Just wanted to say, I do not follow the cap very closely, I depend on TTF
and others for that. Steelers need to upgrade team and some purgings will be necessary. I personally think
the secondary will see major changes.Addition by subtraction LOL.

    Cornerback:
    • Josh Norman (CAR) -- I'd like to get him.
    • Sean Smith (KC)
    • Casey Hayward (GB)
    • Trumaine Johnson (STL)
    • Janoris Jenkins (STL) seems solid, but I haven't seen him play much.
    • Patrick Robinson (SD)
    • Morris Claiborne (DAL) put up almost Blake-like numbers this year (per PFF).
Safety -- looks like a lot of decent talent available:
    • Eric Berry (KC) -- maybe a little old at 31/32.
    • Rodney McLeod (STL) -- young, a little cheaper.
    • George Iloka (CIN), if we can scrub the stripes off him.
    • Husain Abdullah (KC)
    • Isa Abdul-Quddus (DET)
    • Tony Jefferson (ARI)
    • Walter Thurmond (PHI)

We need to let Ramon foster go. We need an athletic guard so we won't have to always pull to the left. Teams are sitting on that play because they know we can not pulled to right.

I'd rather get a capable starting corner in his prime, we have 2 young corners to invest development time in. We need starters NOW. Next year is a contending season. People hate on Claiborne because he didn't live up to the draft hype. I think he had a solid year last year.
