We all wait with anticipation to hear whether you think something is news or not. Thanks for your view from on-high. Do you ever get off your throne or do you always slam other people for reporting something that they have an opinion about?
Do you command the sun to rise every morning o' Wise One? Geez.

3 posts? looks like you created a screen name because you didn't like something i said to one of your other screen names.

i wasn't "slam(ming)" the OP, i was slamming the story itself.

aren't message boards designed to share opinions?

Don't worry hangaber, according to my chart of post count in relation to validity of opinion, you don't have to listen to TheWanderer until he has 450 posts. ;)

I agree and it was a disgrace. Singing the National Anthem should never be about trying to entertain a bunch of boozed up bozos. To me, it was an entertainer trying to make himself more important than the song he was singing, which is disrespectful to our country and the men and women who have served and our currently serving in uniform to protect the freedom that our National Anthem stands for. If you want to hear Aerosmith, then go to a freakin Aerosmith concert. The Star Spangled Banner should be sung with the utmost respect and in the manner that it was written and intended to be sung. When celebrities, pop singers, and rock stars regularly screw up the National Anthem putting their "spin" on it, they should be ashamed.

After reading what you wrote here, and then reading the article, I thought he was going to totally butcher it and be off key and miss the notes. He didn't do any of that. He did sort of mess up one word, instead of "the bombs bursting in air" he said "ah-s bombs bursting in air." You'd have to take poll of Americans to decide how unpatriotic screwing up the word "the" is. The point is...

    That's how he sings!!

    [youtube:319ssblv]-vtwOqwRkNg[/youtube:319ssblv]

It might not have been as crisp as it would have been for the 1992 AFCCG, but he's pretty old now. It's hard to sing as well as your younger self when you're in your 50s or 60s. I think he was fine.

I respectfully disagree with your whole post (I'm not even sure it was intended to be sung at all, let alone a certain way). But for the part highlighted, wouldn't you place more blame on the people that book them than the singers themselves? They put their "spin" on everything. That's what makes them them. They are hired to put their spin on it. I guess they could refuse, since as pop/rock stars they are not suited to sing it, but still, shouldn't your main beef be with someone at CBS or Foxboro, not Tyler?

Yes, I feel that way too about whoever set this up. Perhaps my words were a bit strong, but my point is that when singing the National Anthem is more about the person singing it than the song itself and what it stands for, I have a problem with that. So, yeah, the people who planned it and booked the artist are just as culpable. And maybe I'm wrong about Tyler, but I've never gotten the sense from him that he would place himself below anything or anyone. And I'm OK with you disagreeing, it's just the way I feel.

i don't know. apparently, this is supposed to be a giant circle jerk where everyone agrees with each other and pats each other on the back with a thread full of attaboys but i kind of disagree. i think, with sporting events, the anthem not only acknowledges our patriotism but also energizes the crowd. see the guy who sings the anthem at chicago blackhawks games? most sports people love it (some hate it). i love the nhl games in canada where the crowd gets into the canadian anthem. is it disrespectful for baltimore fans to inject an "O's" in the "OH . . . say does that star-spangled . . . "? jets flying overboard drowning out the singer? fireworks going off in the middle? it's entertainment, man. musicians are artists. steven tyler gave his interpretation. he didn't mock it like roseanne did. he did it his way. it was all tyler. it was boston. it was their game.

I don't know a single thing about Tyler beyond his singing style and the little I've seen of him on American Idol (girlfriend watches). But I do think he sang the song in what's a reasonably respectful way for him. He sang it straight and didn't do anything weird with it. There was no electric guitar or mumbling, except his one mistake. He could have "faked it" and tried to mimic someone who sings it with a more traditional voice, like Kristen Chenoweth or those armed forces choirs that sometimes do it, but in a way I think that would have been worse.

Personally, I hate it when singers go crazy with the song, going up and down and all over the place, adding a zillion notes everywhere.

"O'er the land of the freeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEE, and the home of thuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuuuuuuhhhhh... braaaaaave."

But the crowd always goes nuts for that, so I'm clearly in the minority.

re: run dmc . . . what would have been tricky, other than to rock a rhyme (to rock a rhyme that's right on time), would be reviving jam-master jay from the afterlife. and beantown doesn't want no fawkin' new yawkahs singin da anthem.

OK Snack. I went back and listened to this several more times on youtube and really tried to keep an open mind. It just gets worse every time I hear it. That just straight up sucked. There is no other way for me to characterize it other than suck and a darned disgrace. Not only should Tyler be ashamed but the cheating arse patsies and the NFL should be ashamed as well. The trio of Frankenstein, Tarzan, and Tonto could have done our National Anthem more justice than what Tyler did. Utterly disgusting.

I thought it sounded like a 60 something metal singer doing the national anthem. Not good, not bad. If you want to hear something awful and disrespectful, try and find a recording of Roseanne Barr singing it at a Padres game. Sounded like someone sawing a cat in half!

We're hearing the same thing, it's just an opinion about whether it's a disgrace or not. I'm not saying it was good. That's opinion. But for me, if you'd asked me 4 days ago what a Steven Tyler's national anthem would sound like, I would have said "that!" It was completely predictable. To complain about Tyler's screeching is like asking Yo-Yo Ma to do it and then complaining that there's no words.

Funny that an artist is being slammed for exercising his right to express himself with a song that symbolizes freedom.

Totally agree! I thought he must have really screwed this up and was acting like a buffoon. For Steven Tyler, I thought he tried to sing it very respectfully, that was very subdued for him. There was nothing shameful about that, people may not like his singing but he sung it very professionally.

Regardless of how he sung it, or how we all might hate it, the freedom the flag stands for gives him the right to sing it his way.

Amen. And many of us have served to protect his right to make a mockery of it. But it still pisses me off.
