    Re: Randy Fictner

I think he is the logical choice, he will provide balance. He typically ran spread at Memphis, but I think what you run depends on what players you have. But, Art thinks we need to run more, which Fictner understands. But, I still think we are going to throw it too. Ben just needs to be in the 25-30 attempts a game, that is where he is at his best.

    Re: Randy Fictner

I don't know why I've read some articles that say he isn't ready. Why wouldn't he be? He and Tomlin work well together. If Ben is p*ssed that he lost Arians, it should take the edge off. He has OC experience - just not at the NFL level. Overall I think it would be a good hire and provide that balance between change/continuity that the team needs.

i've said for a couple of years , i'd like to see him get the job. if, he can do it at a college that doesn't get the blue chip recruits, just think of what he can do with the talent level he has here. he put memphis on the national map against the bigger schools during his time there. the production was achieved, that's for sure.

    Re: Randy Fictner

I'm warming to the idea of Fichtner after reading this article. Sounds like he's got a great mind for the game and since Ben already respects him, hopefully it will make changes easier to instill. Like we've said, major changes aren't needed. But for those small changes that are needed it seems as though Fichtner might have as good of chance as anyone at getting through to Ben and getting him to buy in.

I think he'd be an excellent choice. I especially like the fact that it sounds like he's pretty charismatic and that his enthusiasm tends to be contagious.

    Re: Randy Fictner

Yep - This statement says it all...

I thought he had a great strength for being able to adjust in ballgames, being able to make adjustments at halftime," said Helton, now the quarterbacks coach at Southern Cal. "Everywhere he's been, he's been successful. Given the opportunity (to serve as the Steelers' offensive coordinator) he would do that again."

The article certainly builds confidence. The "in-game adjustments" and "attention to detail" are what I'm looking for.

i think art should be our OC. apparently, he has a better feel for this offense than our coaching staff does.

I also like how he knows how to work the pass and the run. He turned Deangelo WIlliams into a 1st rounder....

Fichtner is the logical, and probably "best" choice. I don't think that it's easy in today's game to implement an entirely new "system". Tweeks will be made. The biggest problem that I see with the offense is in the red zone. An emphasis on the running game inside the 20 is what has to happen. Redman in very capable of producing. Don't forget about Baron Batch...I could envision some sprint draws, or screens to him inside the 20 as well. Fichtner for OC!

The only thing that concerns me about this guy is he's been here all along. It's not like we woke up this morning and all of a sudden here's this gem of a coordinator as described in that article. So what, did he just stand on the sidelines every week and not provide any value added input to the game plan or play calling or did Arians just refuse to listen to anything he had to say ? I'd find the latter hard to believe. While Arians may have had his faults I've never seen or read anything that indicated he was a hard guy to work for or get along with. By all accounts he had a pretty good relationship with the offensive players and his assistant coaches. If Fichtner does get the job I guess we'll find out one way or the other.

He was the WR coach and then the QB coach. Since when do they take play calls from those guys?

After reading the article it seems like he would be the right choice. I also like the part of him making the in game adjustments.

I am not sold on him.
Since he has been the quarterbacks' coach I have not seen any improvement in Ben's play.
You would think he would be in Ben's ear about reading defenses and checking the ball down to the running backs just a little bit.

The fact that he ran a spread offense at Memphis makes me wonder if he really would be the breath of fresh air that this offense desperately needs.

I'm not sold on this guy either. I think we will be doing the same thing when Arians was here. But, If he is hired, I will support him to the end.

I know squat about the inner workings of coaching but maybe he just wasn't comfortable adding his input. OC wasn't his job, just how many times could he go to BA saying "you know, I think it may be better this way". I'm sure he had his own responsibilities to keep him busy, I hope anyway, because while I wasn't a FBAI guy, I did acknowledge some of his play calling was strange. If Fichtner can improve in a few areas it could be all we need to get this offense to take off.

Not so sure BG having a good relationship with players doesn't always mean you listen to suggestion by your subordinates or even your superiors. I remember when Tomlin said that Dixon would be part of the game plan and when asked about it Arians said I'm not putting him in there he would get broken in half. Nice guy or not I don't think he encouraged alot of freedom when it came to his coaches.

The only thing I can say is what did Fichtner do as the QB coach with Ben under Arians. He was the QB coach right! Well Ben ran around and held the ball to long and got sacked a lot, thats what happened. Plus, Ben doesn't need a good friend who was his QB coach. He needs someone to teach and control him. I think that Ben would just control Fichtner and still do what he wants.

I say they need to hire someone other then Fichtner because of his association that he has had with Ben. Now if they want to hire within, they should hire Kugler the O-Line coach as the new OC, I'll go for that.

totally agree with all your points here, but doubt it will be Kugler whose on record as saying he's not interested.
