I have been reading several articles and sources, and after several years it appears the Rooneys became tired of the lack of a more persistent ground game? I see the numbers, and inside the redzone we werent very good, but sometimes as with most plays it can be a lack of execution that is the reason you dont get a TD. However, what I am reading is the Mr Rooney "wants" to see a more balanced attack by running the football? My problem is why now with the WR talent we have? One of Rooney's issues with the O is Ben getting sacked too many times? I suppose he wants to run more so he will potentially last longer in his career. I have never been a fan of old school football unless its the 4th qtr and you want to impose your will on another team. Guess we will see after the OC is in place this week?

Why is it that everyone wants the Steelers to throw the ball so much. Whats wrong with a balanced attack? Why not? Mr. Rooney is right after sticking with Arians for five years watching Ben get sacked so much because of his style of play. Ben will be thirty years old and cannot take all of those sacks anymore. Plus, that so called great passing game of Arians did not work again this year. It is a myth about the league being this great passing league. Look at the two most prolific passing teams this year, the Packers, and Saints, both out of the playoffs, what happened? If it wasn't for the Ravens kicker missing that chip shot FG, maybe another team who can run the football and play great defense might have been in the Super Bowl along with the Giants. I will be betting on the Giants who can run the football and play great defense to win the Super Bowl. The 49ers who play the old school way by running the football and playing great defense almost got in. I'm betting that with a full off season, the defenses will catch up with all this passing stuff and make everyone realize that by running the football, you can win.

So, the bottom line is that there is nothing wrong with being able to run the football good. A balanced attack is what a great offense should be about. All this throwing the football all over the yard is not the way as I see it (see the Packers & Saints). It sells tickets, but I say that Defense still wins championships. Give me some old school football, a power game. I think the Rooneys know what they are doing.

    GO STEELERS!!

Once again, we agree. A balanced offensive attack and a dedicated and disciplined defense will always win out. They want to make the NFL all passing, but you know the old saying: "The more things change, the more they stay the same."

I'd like a more balanced attack, but Art II sounds like he wants to go back to Ben's rookie season style of offense.

While I agree with some of what you are saying and agree a balanced attack is necessary, it should be noted that the Giants were 32nd (yes, dead last) in rushing in the NFL this year. Also, their D was ranked 27th in yards allowed and 24th in points allowed.

So saying that the Giants are a power team who runs the ball and plays great defense and that is what needed to make it to the Super Bowl doesn't make a strong argument for you. Bottom line is that the Super Bowl is 2 teams that had weak defenses and had passing offenses. So I think we need to be more balanced and need better situational playcalling, becoming a ground and pound team doesn't mean we will succeed in this passing league.

the giants were also without a few key defensive starters for most of the season. they came back at the end of the year and it is showing. so those rankings are a little misleading for the team as it is now.

Running the ball will open up the pass game. Play action with these WR's would be awesome. Play action wasn't there this year do, to our lack of running the ball. Ben has to start getting under center more, seems like he always wants to be in shotgun. I know he was hurt the last part of the year and had to be, but even before he was hurt he was hardly ever getting under center.

Thats the key here. The Giants got their running game going at the end and also started playing solid Defense. They got it together on both sides at the right time despite the down moments throughout the year that put them in jeopardy of not even making the playoffs and giving them some poopy statistical rankings.
I was waiting for that with the Steelers all year, but they just never got it all firing on all cylinders with any kind of consistency.

Balanced yes but not run heavy which is what Art sounds like he is looking for.

I think we do need to go back to the ground game more, but not at the risk of losing our passing game. I think that we need to be able to do both effectively, and more importantly, be able to decipher which one to use when. Passing or running, if the team we're playing against in any given week has a weakness at one or the other, we need to be able to shift our way of playing. Likewise, if we're trying one or the other and it's not working, then we need to be able to switch it up. That lack of adjustment, particularly mid-game, was a haunting problem for us last year. And honestly, how can we expect to play good offense when we are so incredibly predictable? Perhaps with a new OC plus Rooney pushing for more ground game, we can get a leg up on some of these teams who obviously have us figured out.

AGREED!!!! We have the skill players to be a very balanced offense, just need a better gameplanning approach and beef up the OL through the draft.

I don't think he is looking for the team to run 60% of the time, having ben throw 20 passes a game.

IMO he just want to be balances closer to 50 / 50 , not passing almost 60% which they did this season. Which I hope will mean they look to really upgrade the Oline this offseason.

Yes and that had they done that several years ago they'd have already been running the ball more so I'm not holding my breath on that one. How many years has it been now since we've had a pretty talented and solid O/L ? :(

Can someone show me where Mr. Rooney says he wants a run heavy attack? Not saying he didn't say it or anything but I want to read/hear it for myself.

True ...... Since Cowher, Whiz & Russ Grimm left.
At least they have used a 1st & 2nd round draft picks on the oline the last couple of drafts. If colon & pouncey can stay healthy, & IF gilbert can play LT (fingers crossed), & if they pick up a good guard, they can get back to being a solid oline again..... WOW that is a lot of IFs.

Roethlisberger, Wallace, Brown, Sanders, Cotchery, Miller, Ward, Saunders...

    Run heavy? No.

Mendenhall, Redman, Dwyer, Pouncey, Colon, Gilbert, Foster, soon-to-be-drafted 320 lb. OG...

    Balanced? Yes.

We don't necessarily need to run a lot more. Maybe just a little more. Mostly, we need to run better, and not act like we're afraid of it. Sometimes that's what I thought about BA. That he was afraid to run the ball. Anyone see the Houston vs. Baltimore game? Houston could run the ball all they wanted. If they'd had a different QB they'd have won by double digits. If we could do that to Baltimore, they would never, ever beat us.

That's fine as a good ground game keeps the other team's offense off the field. But in order to chew up yards we need at least 2 outstanding guards. Probably not available in the draft so maybe Art II is thinking about bringing in some FA's. Who's available out there we can afford?

I am with SteelYourPoints, where and when did Rooney say this. We don't even know at this point if BA was fired or if he retired. Personally, I think Rooney told him to get out.

You see there is more than 1 way to run the ball. The 6th best team rushing the ball in terms of YPG was NO. They ran the ball 4 times for every 6 times they threw it, or 2 runs for every 3 throws. We were more like 4 for every 5. Hmm, so what could Rooney truly want to accomplish? Does he want to run it more? No, he wants to run with a purpose. You see every team we played knew that we only ran the ball so we could throw it deep, and because we never ever ran down a teams throat, they never respected it. BA never saw value in the run. If he had his choice, he would have thrown the ball every time...every time. Rooney had enough.

Also of note, NO threw the ball to its running back 120 times.

Why not??? As I stated me and my Homie Art see it the same way.......He wants Teams to fear our running game.....He is a very smart man and is thinking just the way he should....We have a great Defense,,,,hence run the ball and help that great be even greater.....

We have the most speed at WR as any Team in the NFl....So again take that speed to a new level by forcing 1 on 1 coverage...

We have a true Power RB that teams hate to tackle we also have a great open field runner who Teams should fear in space,,both can block above the line,,,both can catch above the line, both our way above the line in blitz PU......

So again why not?????? We have all the tools to DOMINATE the NFL,,,,we simply need to dictate who we are going to be....I watched a College Coach who understands X'S and O'S take a Team with half the talent that we have to the NFC Chamionship game., so why in the world would a smart man think anything different????

The Bottom line is I completly understand his point and I agree 110%......All very similar to what I have been screaming for 3 years now....So let's launch this new ERA and dominate the game while we have the TOOLS.....Anything less than 4 SB'S inthe next 6 years is a failure IMO.....I know people will be like WTF,,WTH,,, this is the NFL,,NO Team can do that.......Well,,we can because we are built to do just that, should have already benn doing that ,but we went the wrong way....

A short explanation on the wrong wa is Team ball...Listen to the D players for the last 4 years ,,,listen to the Vet's at WR,listen to the OL .....They all want the same approach,Now put that together and maybe you can see what our Owner is feeling...........

:this!: Couldn't agree more! If we had 2 stud guards the O would be unstoppable with Pouncey in the middle. No more penetration into the backfield on running plays and no more pressure up the middle on passing plays. The best in the draft is Decastro, which we are too far down to get. But we could get Glenn out of Georgia. Big kid. I hope we go that way and draft a couple of OG's and then try to pick up defensive backfield help in FA.

I'm too tired to read today so forgive me if someone already mentioned this. Going with a passing offense puts a lot of pressure on your defense. Not sure the point I'm trying to make (please se first sentence) but I'm sure I had one. hahaha. Man I need some sleep.

I do not think that the team needs to run the ball much more, just a little.

They do need to run it better, which is the key.

I say get a good guard and a good h-back or full-back that can catch passes. Strengthening the line will also help pass protection.

The defense has the same weakness: up front. The defense needs a middle linebacker and another d-lineman.
