...where would the Steelers be today? The benching of Lacy got me to thinking. Inevitably every year in the draft there's gonna be that guy that we just "HAVE TO HAVE" and who is a "sure thing". So who is the guy that you were the most wrong about and are glad we DIDN'T take?

Not sure about the Lacy vs. Bell debate. Both have gotten hurt and I don't think either will have really long productive careers the way the game is now with RB's.

I would have picked CB's first round for about the last 7 years and eliminated the ones that didn't work out after year 3. Who knows where we would be with the 10 yard cushion that we always allowed?

Just be glad that I'm not the GM cause then we wouldn't have Bell nor DuPree who I believe are going to be big stars in this league for years to come.

We would have Dan Marino, with a few extra trophies

Yeah the Shazier pick really ticked me off. I was actually wanting Dennard that year. I think I'm going to turn out to be happy though.

I was really down when the Browns jumped up in the first to take the CB Justin Gilbert a couple years ago. I really liked him. Turns out he's a bum and can't get on the field for them.

If we had revis or the lot they'd still be playing that damn cushion! I honestly believe it for whatever reason that is beyond my grasp. Ike in his prime was physical and fast and they still played him off. I know it's a part of the scheme, but simple math suggests good jams causes extra ticks to flatten the QB and disrupts the dink and dunk stuff... It's maddening

There were 2 players that the steelers drafted I was very excited about. Limas sweed and Mike adams. Both were busts. I thought they would be solid pros.
As far as someone we passed on. I remember wanting James Laurinaitis. I think 2009. Not sure if he is even still playing

I disagree with the premise of this thread personally, because there aren't any sure things. :)

I can't think of any guys I've hoped for that turned out to be busts. Maybe Fuller...I liked Kyle Fuller a lot. He had a good rookie season, but seems to be struggling this year. I contend that he would be having a breakout season here this year because he would have rode the pine so much last year. :)

This thread is going to be full of a lot of "I was wrong to want Nix so bad" posts, right? ;+)

Oh that "sure thing" thing was me saying that FANS think of them as such. Not that they literally are. So I agree with you saying there are no sure things. I'm just saying that some fans seem to get so hooked on certain guys it's almost like they consider them bust proof or something. Fuller was someone I liked as well. Didn't some project we might get him?

I`m not sure if this fits the "premise",
Because, I don`t know if he would`ve been available, when we picked, whatever year he was taken,,,

But, I sure am glad we didn`t take Ndamakong Suh, or however you spell his name...

He fits our "profile", of a "big, nasty, D-Lineman"...

And if I was aware he was available, when he was drafted, I probably would have been screaming for us to take him...

However, he turned into one of the biggest pieces of ****, in the league...

Regardless of how much money he currently makes!!!!

    GO STEELERS!!!

Great call on Laurinaitis. How different would this team be if they had drafted him instead of Ziggy Hood?

Yep I totally agree about Sweed. I was telling people we had found the next John Stallworth! I actually was mad that we took Adams because of his off the field stuff but I was elated that we had taken 2 linemen because at the time Ben was getting killed. Honestly that's the most pumped up Steeler fans had been over the first 2 draft picks maybe ever. That's how desperate we were to fix the line.

I never get "that" worked up over a guy but I was for Bell. I was pimping him hard when we drafted him and others were questioning it. That was my good pick, however, I will admit to my other pimp...Limas. Even when they released him I wasn't ready to admit defeat.

Well it is easy to look back and say I wanted a guy cause most people won't say a guy they wanted who didn't turn out.

2014 I wanted Fuller who went before us then wanted Dennard...mostly out of need. I didn't like how grabby he was but we needed a DB

2013 Man crush on Vaccaro and was picked before our pick

2012 Decastro fell to us....man crush granted that year

2011.......no 1st rounder comes to mind(might have been drunk)

2010 Wanted Wilson from Boise St, scream to trade back for him. We took Pouncey and when healthy that worked out for us.

One draft that hurt was in 07 I wanted Carriker bad...he went 2 picks before us so then thought we would get the local guy Revis.......NOT!!!!!!!! That was back the back picks right before us that hurt.

2014 there were a couple players I wanted later in the draft that I just out right liked.....4th round Ellis DT(raiders) and Cockrell(bills)! Glad we ended up with Ross.

This past year my man crush was a later round guy, who ended up being very late 7th round but we got him....Holliman. I was so stoked but he didn't make it and is gone.... :-(

Marcus Peters. They drafted Bud Dupree. Peters would have been the start of solidifying the secondary. Not disappointed in the Dupree pick, he already is showing upside in his rookie campaign and is way ahead of Jarvis Jones.

The strongest I felt about a player I wanted but we drafted someone else was Nick Mangold. I thought for sure we were taking him when we traded up, but we got Santonio Holmes instead. Tough to say how it would've worked differently if we had Mangold. Since Santonio caught the game-winner for us, I guess he wins out.

The Shazier year I really wanted Taylor Lewan. He went before our pick so no chance there.

The Jarvis year I was all over Vaccaro, but again, he went a pick ahead of us so no chance.

The DeCastro year I thought we had no chance at him, so while he was always my #1 that year, I wanted guys like Osemele, Silatolu and Konz.

The Heyward year was tough, and looking at the list I can't really recall who I wanted. Maybe it was nobody. It was probably an OL (Watkins, Costanzo, Pouncey, Wisniewski).

The Pouncey year I really wanted Earl Thomas. But damnit if Seattle didn't take him a few picks ahead of us!

One thing is clear: I like the offensive linemen and safeties!

The thing about Revis though, whom I would LOVE to have, is that I think he might have been TOO good for us to keep. The reason I say that is because he basically seems like an absolute mercenary who is willing to always go to the highest bidder and will play for a cellar dweller just to get paid. I just think he would have wound up asking for more money than we'd be willing to pay for him and obviously some other team would have outbid us and he would be gone. You think there might be something to that? His track record certainly suggests so.

I literally teared up (I AM a girl after all lol) when we drafted Shazier. I wanted a CB SOOO badly. Now, I love Shazier and own his jersey.

If I'd have gotten my way Aldon Smith would have been snatched up off the scrap heap, been given a life lesson by one Heath Miller and Ben wouldn't have a mid foot sprain. Unfortunately this did not happen.

I guess I am more about free agency than the draft. I really wanted to step up and get a FA corner the past couple of years. I knew that would never happen. I would love for them to take a look at Weddle this off-season as an option at SS.

Is it me or is almost no one answering the OP's question?

I didn't want Lacy, so I'm in the clear there. Although I did want Gio Bernard over Bell, and was cranky when he was drafted before our pick. I'm also on record saying I wouldn't take Bell before the 3rd round, and said we were reaching for need when we took him in the 2nd. So, a little wrong there... I liked Bell, but I thought he was too slow to be great. And he really is slow at top speed. But I didn't see the quickness that he has now. I don't know if it's because he lost 20 pounds or because I was just blind, but he's way quicker than I thought he'd be.

Here's a funny one. In the same year, I really wanted Barrett Jones. I thought he'd solve our backup issues and be able to play all 5 positions, and after a year or two replace Ramon Foster as our starting LG, and could take over for Pouncey if need be. I thought it was an obvious pick. We took Shamarko and Landry instead of Barrett and Shamarko like I wanted, and I was crazy pissed. Then, 2.5 years later, Barrett Jones joins the team, immediately gets cut, and Landry wins us some games.

The year we got Mendenhall, I really wanted Chris Williams (who was gone before our pick, but turned out to suck I'm pretty sure), and the top guy on my list when we picked was Phillip Merling. Maybe that's why I'm such a Mendenhall defender. Things turned out way better than if I'd been in charge. I will say in my own defense that this was before I watched much or any tape on draftees myself. I was going solely by scouting reports.

There are more. Maybe I'll come back later.
