Another week another round of fines for the Steelers for violating league uniform policy in supporting charitable causes near and dear to them and trying to raise awareness for causes that deserve to be paid attention to. Williams received another fine this time for wearing messages on his eye black in support of the fight against breast cancer. William Gay was fined for wearing purple shoes in support of domestic abuse awareness. Gay did the same a year ago and had his PSA run heavily this past weekend discussing his mother's battle with domestic abuse. Considering Terry Bradshaw's public rant against Greg Hardy, the league's increased policies on domestic violence and PSA's like Gay's and other current and former stars the fines seem strange to say the least.

So with at least three players stepping forward to show the world the way men should act and support a cause could Roger Goodell soon be calling the Rooneys and politely asking him to have his players stop embarrassing the league by being better men than those in charge and actually being role models in a league that has a public image problem.

I could see it happening. I wouldn't put anything past that guy. I would then hope that whoever fields the call would politely tell him to shove off.

I usually scoff at conspiracy theorists but I really cant dismiss that the whole thing was a farce.

I anxiously await the day one of the guys wears shoes or eye black saying "bus, meet king Roger" I choose a bus as opposed to a bullet because I don't want any more gun control:lolol:

Ben Roethlisberger PFJ shoes = Fined
William Gay - Purple shoes for Domestic Violence = Fined
DeAngelo Williams request to wear pink all thru season to raise awareness for Breast Cancer which involved 5 females in his family = Denied.
Cam Heyward - Wears eye black honoring his late father who passed from colon cancer. = Fined. Asked permission = Denied.
Devon Still - Wear eye marks honoring his daughter Leah Still with "Still - Strong" = No Fine, millions of dollars raised via sales of shirts.

I can see not wanting uniforms being used for advertisements and raising awareness but at least be consistent Rog.

If there is an exception to the rule, I don't mind it being for a little girl dealing with such a horrible thing at such a young age.

I don't mind it either but at the same time what you are doing is saying that we value a little girl's Cancer fight more than we value the struggle Williams' mother suffered and IronHead's struggle as well. Now a child fighting cancer is just horrible but should it be seized by the league and turned into a national story because it looks good for the league when you also have these stories that are also good and raise awareness for worthy causes. Personally I try to stay away from commenting on the Leah Still case because it is the third rail in the debate. However in cases such as this the hypocrisy of fining players for something that you are asking them to willing support during the month of October anyway needs to be addressed

I dont care what the leagues reasoning is for allowing it, selfish, noble, I dont care. Shes a kid that hasnt even begun to experience life yet, her childhood has been stolen from her. Personally I hate that people are using it to try and put egg on the leagues face.

I lost my dad to cancer, still dont care that Williams, Heyward and others are being denied while Devon was allowed.

I agree 100% hence the third rail comment. I loved everything about what went on with Devon Still and Leah until became the league thing. I mean the story was so inspiring to start with. Now that doesn't mean that I found it less inspiring just that the spontaneity of it seemed to lose some after it became an NFL thing instead of this outpouring by the Bengals and coaches of other teams.

I don't see it so much as an exception to the rule as I do a rogue commissioner that doesn't even know his own regulations. Either enforce it or not. If the only difference is gender and age but the message is the same then I find that to be discrimination. Honestly, I really see where you are coming from but at any rate Roger should rethink his stance on Heyward's fine and not collect it. The problem is and has been for years that Gooddell sees himself and judge, jury and executioner when it comes to dishing out punishments and fines and that needs to end sooner rather than later. Believe me, I hated to use Leah Stills condition in but in the long run what really is the difference?

If what they are doing is going to help people, help a cause then let it happen. What the league has to worry about is getting there own act together. They have more problems in there own house than the teams do. Well except for the cheatriots, they get away with anything.

I know it stinks, but I kind of understand... if you allow it where do you stop? Its kind of like when players started getting out of hand with props during TD celebrations... eventually players were pulling sharpies and cell phones out of their uniforms...

I think David Todd made a good point, what if the tribute the player wants to make in the future is for some controversial person? (like a friend who die, but was of bad character)

National guard being allowed to pay the NFL for hero awareness, never should happen. Iron head shouldn't be fined nor Gay nor Williams, nor Still. Outsourcing jobs, taking (tax payer) govt money, playing faves etc... Should be fined!

    Not your daddy's NFL

What should happen if the NFL had a media relations team that was worth a darn is that after the fines are announced and they talk to the players involved they match the fine plus whatever donations happen the day of the announcement to whatever cause they are supporting. This way the acknowledge that they have rules and they talked to the players about those rules but the recognized the awesome job they are doing and want to help. That way everyone saves face.
