I was watching the Hawks/Lions game with the volume on mute. When I saw the Hawks casually bat the ball out of the end zone, I knew a flag was coming out (forgetting of course the game was taking place in Seattle). I had recollections of a Steelers/Packers game (I think) where the Steelers, who NEVER block a field goal actually blocked a field goal, took possession of the ball and tried to lateral, fumbled and ultimately batted the ball out of bounds. The call was....possession never changed (and they said that aspect was not reviewable for some reason) and because the ball was batted out of bounds, possession reverted back to the last team to possess....the Packers. In effect, we were penalized for having blocked the field goal. Somehow the referees knew ENOUGH of the rules that day to be sure the Steelers got penalized....

Anyway, couldn't believe NOBODY even TALKED about the call when the play happened and that the former players themselves were clueless about it. Further, they say, but punters knock it out of their own end zones all the time and it's not a penalty....(uh, safety there dude....). Anyway, I just thought it was interesting. But it's not interesting anymore..... now it's time to focus on the Steelers finding a way NOT to lose again next Monday....

The play I thought about was the one where Troy knocked it through the endzone against the rats a few years ago. They missed the call then too.

I was watching with a bunch of the guys in the lounge. I jumped up and said exactly that! I was hot! Everyone shouted me down and said it didn't matter because they would have gotten possession anyway. You're right though. There was no talk about it by the analysts at all!

I was waiting for a review of the fumble and call, but apparently you can't call a penalty if the line judge rules it wasn't intentional to start with? That's asinine! The Seahawks player even said he was trying to knock it out to get the touch-back!

Crappy part for the NFL was.... that all replays clearly show..... the back judge focused on the player and ball..... why didn't he throw the flag? Not sure when that rule was instituted, but Detroit has had a knack for losing games due to messed up calls.

Yeah, wasn't that punched in the field of play? Pretty sure the rule says you can't punch in the end zone......

And it was against the Patriots..... so F-that, everything is legal against the Pats.

It just made me think of it and didn't they come out and say that Troy should have been called for that? I'm not against what he done. I'm just saying it made me think of it. I just remember he sorta punched it hard and then after the game was sorta coy about whether he did it on purpose or not. I'm not even sure about the rules but once people started talking about "batting" it and all that it just made me think about it. What am I missing?

The only time I can remember him doing it was against the Patriots and he came diving in, in a scrum of sorts for the ball. It wasn't even clear if he punched it or what he did IIRC. Wright last night straight up slapped it out of the back of the endzone deliberately and said as much after the game. Was there a different time where Troy did it?

No that's what I was talking about but seems like after the game they asked Troy if he knew what he did was against the rules and he just sorta laughed it off. I was thinking the league came out and said that it could have been called. That's why I was saying I thought they missed that call that time. That's been a pretty long time ago though and I can't remember exactly but that's what I was thinking. Actually last night I was talking about it with one of my buddies on xbox live.

This is why the Cheathawks/Cheatriots was such a perfect SB matchup.
