Tomlin called Timmons' toe injury turf toe today. Tomlin said that they weren't overly alarmed about it, and I'm not typically an injury alarmist, but anytime I hear turf toe I get nervous. Hopefully it's minor and he recovers quickly.

Harris, Nelson, V. Williams and Goodwin are also ruled out against the Packers.

I think Timmons will be o.k. The guy who was pushing for a roster spot was Goodwin , the missed time is really going to hurt his 53 man roster chances. He was having a really nice camp .

This is an injury that can be......troubling. I doubt Timmons plays anymore preseason...... he'll need that time to proplerly and completely heal. Good thing we have enough ILB to get thru preseason.........

Was thinking the same thing. Anything that can sink Lambert has to be painful.

I remember when Lambert had his career ended by Turf Toe. I couldn't believe that my favorite player at the time couldn't overcome the problems from that injury. Hopefully Timmons doesn't rush back too soon.

Turf toe is really bad and I sorta cried inside a little when I read the title to this thread. We simply can not afford to lose what little veteran leadership we have on the field. I know Timmons isn't exactly known for his brains but he's certainly much more versed than most of our other backers.

Scary injury. But sports medicine is a lot better than it was 30 odd years ago. Even if the sting of Lambert's injury seems like yesterday...

Hoping all goes well. But I have to admit I'm nervous about it.

Well good thing they're stacked at ILB. Now we see why they were giving Moats ILB snaps as well. If timmons doesn't go expect to see Spence and Shazier with Vince playing the run.

If it does linger we will be fine with Vince Williams at the buck as he is a seek and destroy LBer.

A whole lot of Jack Lambert talk, and it's impossible not to think of him, but let's not forget that turf toe can be perfectly minor, too. He could be fully healed and back to normal before the Patriots game.

Ok, this will probably be a stupid question but I'll ask it anyhow. Before I do I will remind people I have been around a while and have heard of the injury many times but...what the heck is turf toe? Like I said, I have heard of it and I do know that it can be serious or not (hopefully not as far as Timmons is concerned). Really, the most serious injury I deal with is Anal Glaucoma and that is only when it comes to work!

    Lol.

It's a sprain of the ligaments around the big toe, which affects how you walk/run/jump etc. Basically, the mechanism that lifts your foot of the floor (i.e. the part of walking you use your toes for) breaks. I suppose it's bit like a hyperextension. There's usually pain, swelling, and use of the toe is severely limited. This is why it's so frustrating - you don't realise how much a massive guy like a LBer depends upon his big toe to do everything his role requires.

It can be fixed. It just depends on the severity. Like Snack says, we've moved on a lot from Lambert's day - both in terms of treatment, and in terms of turf, shoes, etc. Still, it is one of those injuries to make Steelers fans shudder.

I am also very concerned about V. Williams. The OP said he is out. Wasn't he out last week too? What is keeping him off the field?

Lizare72 said: "Well good thing they're stacked at ILB. Now we see why they were giving Moats ILB snaps as well."

Hmm! So Moats is one of those very rare LB's that can play both I and O.

I think it's the hamstring he tweaked the other week. He's not listed as an 'official' injury, so I'm guessing it's a training camp knock that they're just playing safe with.

yea we went from being stacked to being thin real quick. yes moats can play both but fort now becomes quite important since zumwalt was released. thats alot of playing put on spence and shazier in preseason. garvin and wild being moved there are the others. i remember watching lambert try to run at the end of the game down in miami, that was his last. it was so sad. i yelled at him to get in that game for about10 minutes. i was in row 7 behind the steelers bench and with 4 or 5 minutes left he went in and it was ugly. my heart sank but he was a warrior until the end.

I think Antonio Gates played with it a few years ago.

I have a dumb question. Since the problem is his little toe, is amputation an option?

Ronnie Lott would say yes, but I would say no. Definitely not.

Slightly different scenarios. Lott had a finger amputated to play in the SB, not for a season.

One of the best middle line backers ever,49er Patrick Willis retired last year because of turf toe, seems like middle backers get TT more than other players.........
