I've been reviewing the roster pre-camp and there are some position locks...... there will be plenty of Battles also.

On Defense I can easily see 26 players. 6 DL, 10 LBERS, 10 DBs. Some interesting battles I'm looking forward to is Zumwalt vs Garvin. Chickillo vs. Lemmon vs. Howard Jones.

How about the CBs. Who will be the 5th guy. Grant, Webb,. Safeties? DL?

I think the most intriguing one for me will be the battle at strong safety. I think ST29 is the penciled in starter and I think he will do fine, but there really is no past experience to gauge him by. Plus the tweaks in scheme by Butler and the absence of Troy that should be factored in. I'm curious to see how it plays out.

alot depends on cortez and if we keep will allen. golden's play at safety could be another factor. i think we keep 6 corners barring another cortez meltdown. not sure about 10 LB'ers. maybe we only keep 9 and an extra safety.

There are going to be some battles.

    OFFENSE:

QB: Does Landry save his job?
RB: I don't really see any battles here unless a rookie invite surprises me.
WR: The only question here is if we keep 6 or if a guy can knock DHB off the roster. I don't see any changes from the 5.
TE: Could we keep 4? I think we might. Miller, Spaeth, and Jones I think are locks, but I think the guy from TA&M might have a shot as well.
OL: Where is the depth? The starters are set, but I think 3-4 Oline spots are up for grabs. Every depth spot including Adams and Wallace I think are up for grabs.

    DEFENSE:

Dline: 4 are set. Walton, Geathers and Thomas I think are all fighting for 2 spots.
OLB: Again 4 spots are set. Can Lemon or Jones or Chickillo force their way onto roster?
ILB: Again 4 I think are set. Garvin is leading due to his special team skills, but Zumwalt could push him.
CB: How many do we keep? 5 or 6? Webb must earn his spot, but I think the other 5 are givens. Webb is fighting guys at S for the spot IMO.
S: Again...how many? There is going to be a fierce competition here IMO.

Think he means James but unless they carry 4, I don't think he is a lock, he will have to beat out Blanchflower who has a year in the system.

Isn't Zumwalt an outside linebacker? Is he learning ILB because that would seem like a waste given the log jam at the position

In short Zumwalt is battling for a roster spot at ILB/ST. Yes there is a log jam but there is also one at OLB and he's physically a better fit inside.

Do you think they have a realistic chance for the 53 or even the PS. I admit I know little of them. Geathers has the inside track at DE backup being a favorite of DL coach and getting into shape and being highly aggressive. Thomas has a edge being a vet and we all know Tomlin likes vets. I think these two fight for the 5DL spot and Walton, Conrath, & Hemmer fight for the 6th and final spot.

conrath has expierience and the size also. i think thomas and his 2 mil. are as good as gone. hemmer has size and speed which is becoming part of the "new scheme" of the DE's getting after it more than just taking up blockers thoery. he played pretty well last preseason. whats nice is we have some pretty good young depth at that spot. walton too. i don't think anyone is a lock yet.

29 will be given Every chance to start and succeed, it's his to lose and we Need him to succeed but Allen is our safety net....he's proven he can play well. He, Allen, and Mitchell are locks. Then what, Allen is old and we need depth. Jordan can hit, can he cover? Holliman can cover, can he tackle/hit? Can Golden be more than a STer? Can Ventrone? Is Ian Wild the "wildcard"? Who is Darby.......

yea, and I like kruger but we drafted a kruger in chickalo. I think chick is the guy to watch as that extra LB if we keep one. kruger is one of those guys like chick that could be that OLB/DE get after the QB with some size bonus player. almost a designated pass rusher of sorts. or that 1st and 2nd down big OLB on the left side to help stop the run. we have a lot of athletic bigger guys right now and I think that's a good thing. more speed on this defense among the big men. just not giants. we have them too. this camp should be very interesting compared to DL camps. I see more hybrid types in here.

Then we'd be right back to where we were with Troy playing the linebacker/safety hybrid role. We just seem to lose so much on pass defense I would be against it. I don't think either would be shifted away from their linebacker spots by the coaches anyway.

Physically he has more than enough to be a great SS. Mentally we don't know. Different responsibilities, different reads.
