Sure, we posted a winning record last year before getting creamed at home in the play offs in the 1st round by our arch rivals, but no one can say we haven't stumbled the last few years. And if I had to point at one thing (even though we know there are multiple factors), I point to the 2008 draft. It was worthless. And that total waste of time hurt us by 2012 and 2013. The last few still could be decent, we will see. Last year we got 4 potential solid players, and that could go up to 5 if Archer improves greatly. 2013 all depends on Jarvis Jones having a breakout season this year. Between 2008 - 2012 were mostly bad drafts. No wonder we have so many holes. We are lucky we aren't far worse off. Crossing fingers on this year's draft, big time.

Idk Lloyd, I don't think those drafts are all bad. 2008 sucked really badly and that definitely hurt us, but all the rest have at the very least been decent. I feel like that's why we haven't really dropped off that much. It seems like 2012 was the next worse, yet we still picked up a possible pro bowl caliber G and a good solid LT. Spence is at the very least good depth with a possibility of becoming a starting quality player. Maybe 2011? But that one depends on Allen. If he gets his confidence back, then he could end up salvaging the results of that one. Those might not have been that good, but not that bad either... At least not yet. 2010 was the one that sticks out as the best one by far.

Wow, since that 2008 debacle our drafts have actually been pretty good. At least 2 starters from each one.

I agree with the others here, 2008 was bad, but the rest I have liked. Drafting well and not holding onto players and/or players who hurt themselves off the field are separate topics. They have actually drafted quite well.

I've said it before, you miss more than you hit in the draft, its not poor drafting, its just a testament to how hard it is to make it in the NFL. More will fail than not. You hit on a couple of picks, thats good, 3 or more, thats great.

Well, 2009 is pretty bad. Other than Wallace, almost zero production. Hood was a bust. Lewis we got just 1 year of play out of him. 2010 is solid. We got just 1 player from 2011 class. We need to do better than that if we want to compete. I am not crazy about 2012 at all. Other than DD, only Beachum is worth more than a bucket of warm spit. We have to wait and see on 20013 and 2014, but I feel last year's has a chance to be pretty solid. We MUST get some players next month. It is make or break in my opinion. We GOT to get some DBs and a legit OLB.

Nice attempt to flame bait. I am still waiting for you to contribute any quality content whatsoever. Do you ever offer anything but whining?

I agree with Blast some solid hits in the last few drafts and while they weren't home runs I don't think the front office ever tries to swing for the fences when it comes to the draft. When you put the drafts up there side by side so to speak the thing that really stands out is that when they had talented entrenched starters they used the middle to lower rounds to draft not necessarily the next starter but were looking for quality backups that may or may not blossom into something. You look at guys like Humpal and Bruce Davis, Thad Gibson, Nick Williams and all the midround DB's I don' think they drafted these guys thinking they would one day take over for Harrison and Woodley, or that they needed someone to replace Troy and Ryan Clark, maybe perhaps Taylor but then again the defensive backfield has always been a mess for almost 20 years. So in that respect I think they need to start looking less for guys that are good backups and are capable of stepping in for limited action and really try more for guys that really are "the next man up" someone to push the starters guys that make the coaching staff think man we have to get this guy on the field.

I think at this point, they have no choice but to look for actual starters on D. We are operating on fumes at OLB, have, as of right now, one of the worst D backfields in the entire NFL. Gay is underrated but still more of a nickle guy....Ike is gone, Allen is the worst starting CB in the NFL last year...that's bad. Blake is tiny and no other NFL team wanted him. Mitchell was a huge disappointment at S. Here's hoping the change at DC will help get some new guys up to speed quicker than Dick was able to ever pull off.

I think the problem with the 2009 draft has more to do with the FO being able to keep the players instead of the actual players we drafted. Wallace has been to a pro bowl and Urbik is a good starter for Buffalo and Lewis is a solid stater for NO. If we drafted two starters and a pro bowler every year that would be a huge win for us. I feel ya with 2012, although DD and Beachum were great picks. Spence is kinda a wild card since we don't know what he is going to become. While we have to wait for 2013 and 2014, we might have drafted the best player in the whole 2013 draft in Bell... So that helps lol

i agree tho that it is pretty imperative to get some good players this year. A good corner and solid rusher could make us big time contenders to win it all.

yeah but there is the rub, even with Butler running his own version of the 3-4 when drafting start quality there is still going to be a step learning curve for those rookies and as we have witnessed with Cortez Allen, it is a position that requires mental toughness because even the most gifted players can look foolish out there. Like I said to Jack they might be aggressive or more aggressive than when DL coached but it will have to be very vanilla in order to maximize the effectiveness of rookie starters.

Yeah the Davis pick soured me on the Zumwalt pick last off season and started me on my UCLA LB tirade. Holding out hope that Zumwalt might see the field. The Hawthorne and Richardson picks boggle my mind. Richardson can play, or rather could play don't know the story on him and Hawthorne received a bit of hype from Lake. Actually Richardson did as well, and neither made the roster or PS from what I remember.

I just hope hope we get a good spin on the dial this year and atleast draft something more than fodder and I hope we guard our PS a bit better by getting some decent prospects a damn hat.

22 hits 38 misses out of 50 players. 14 are actual contributors out of the 22 hits. that's not a lot for a team that swears by building through the draft. that leaves a lot of FA's needed to fill in and we just don't go after much in that way. now I will also say for many of those years we already had starters in those spots. we definitely need more hits of value in the draft since so many former starters are gone now.

Well we got some guys that are gonna be the franchise going forward and that's really a feat in and of itself. We have a franchise RB in Bell and a franchise WR in AB and MAYBE even in Bryant. It's good to have skill positions locked down. Wallace also actually produced most of the time he was here but ultimately just didn't realize that he wasn't as good as he thought he was. What's weird is if I was gonna go back to 2008 and have a conversation about where we'd be in 2015 I'd say "we're obviously gonna be stacked on d as usual but it's the offense that concerns me". It's really kinda weird that I actually feel the opposite.

I'm sure some will disagree vehemently, but in the past several years we have been average at talent acquisition. We just happen to have a franchise QB, who was acquired 11 years ago, to elevate 8-8 talent acquisition to a playoff team. We've had a few great finds, but we've also whiffed a lot. Aside from Mac's math being off (22 + 38 does not equal 50), I think the point is spot on.

What it really comes down to are the 2013 and 2014 classes. Who are these guys, and will they deliver long term? I honestly think that we DID draft well overall these past 2 drafts, and that these guys will help to elevate us to a perennial playoff team again, but they're still mostly unproven as of yet. I'm hopeful that 2013 and 2014 broke the cycle of average drafting that we've been in for a while. We shall see.

I believe Terry Hawthorne was cut after camp or thereabouts due to injury. Not sure why he wasn't on the IR (cant recall the injury), but it seemed they were pretty quick with cutting ties. I never heard too much about it, but maybe there was something else going on behind the scenes to let go of him so quickly.

Dude I know. I've heard TONS of horror stories. Our kids are still a little too young for school but we are strongly considering the private route to avoid a lot of this stuff. I just am not sure that private schools will have good sports programs and I want my kids to be able to compete.

If Tennessee is like Pennsylvania, they'll be able to participate with your local district.

I'm not sure about that actually. I think in high school they can if they are in certain "divisions" or something like that. Actually Chad Pennington went to a private school here in town and they got to compete with a lot of public schools. I bet the vast majority of people in the draft and really in the league went to public schools though wouldn't you?

Common core is hideous. We no longer encourage kids to have any creativity or independent thinking. All we want them to do is memorize things and be robots. The Fed should have NOTHING to do with education; all they did is make it worse. Leave it to the states to figure it out.

Now that I think about it, the kids that I was thinking about were probably home schooled. They were permitted to participate on the sports teams of the public school district in which they resided. I'm sorry. It's been four years since my youngest graduated from public high school.

I'm actually a guidance counselor at a private school. We have a cooperative agreement with a local public school that allows our students to compete on its football, soccer, and wrestling teams.
