The Steelers announced the promotion of Porter and Olsavsky today. As expected, Porter will coach outside linebackers and Jerry O will coach inside linebackers.

I would think so. keeping porter which was new, jerryo which has been here helping, the new RB coach last year and munch, means we have the same coaches together in year two again and butler just changing roles, leaves us with probably one of the best staffs we have had in a long time and definitely the best under MT. putting different coaches together last year meant learning what each other does, now they know and can expand. pretty happy about this.:smiley1::cool:

    Congrats to both of them.

Porter was probably the most visible coach on the sideline last year - always good for entertainment value.

That would be nice but my question is how long does he stay here. He is a great coach and a former head coach so I assume other teams might want to steal him after this year. Hope not because I like what our line did this year and I think year two should get even better!

That's what I was thinking? Next we will have a 3rd and long coach. Come to think of it, last season we could have used a 3rd and long coach.

I like it, now if they can get the players to play like these 2 we will be in good shape. JERRY O,
a very over achieving player. Peasy we know all about.

most teams in the NFL had two O-line coaches. up until just a couple of years ago we only had one. being that OLB and ILB are so different in a 3-4 this is a good idea. the more expertise the better I'd say. tricks of the trade so to speak.

I say kudos to these moves. Not only were these guys good to great players (Jerry O wasn't blessed with much physical ability but got the most out of what he had), but they have a "fire in the belly" and without that, you won't likely get very far. Football is 80% about pure desire, to make the tackle, knock someone on their wallet, etc. Both these guys had that and some of it will rub off on the team. I do not believe that blind enthusiasm and passion fixes all (see Mike Singletary as head coach), but I'd rather see a bunch of hopped up maniacs losing from lack of talent, than physically talented players lose from lack of drive and effort.

jerry o has also been charting opposing teams offenses for several years now to help us make game plans from week to week. I liken JP more to the singletary approach of coaching but jerry o to more of the cerebral approach. this gives us a good mix of both.

I agree with you here. And Jerry O also brings the "lunch pail" attitude which is very Pgh Steelers. You see that trait becoming less and less prominent in today's world; here is hoping the Steelers still have it, to some degree, any ways. I remember seeing a show about John Banaszak. I don't recall really watching him play, as I was a little too young. But seeing that NFL films on that guy really brought home the "lunch pail" philosophy.

Maybe they will give him the Assistant Head Coach title like they did with Russ Grimm to keep him here. Either way I hope he stays here for a long time.

...or from having to figure out an over-complicated defensive scheme that causes them to have to over-think rather than to use their natural athletic ability to make plays all over the fiend the way they did in college.
