    how come we cannot lure

We could probably afford him on a quarter-to-quarter contract.

could the type of player we get change? DL liked good tackling zone CB's. he had mentioned a couple of years ago about getting better man on man corners though and making them into the type we like. that never really came to be. will butler go after that type of player actually now? I don't see that type in blake, McCain or gay and then we have allen that had some of that ability at first but never grew with it. is that because of carnell being that zone blitz type of coach through DL's system and should that change?

That's what I was gonna say. Not that I wouldn't like to have him but he would be really expensive. Also if you noticed in the rats game it seemed like Revis couldn't cover the crossing routes the rats were running one right after the other. McCourty is the guy on the pats I would like to have the most from the defensive side of the ball.

going to a 4-3 is not happening....we have no 4-3 personnel outside of Timmons and Heyward....The OP is right, they would have to learn all new positions...Then there is the question of what the heck do we do with guys like Spence, Williams,Mccullers, McClendon ....who all fit a 3-4 scheme....

The only thing I could see happening is some sort of a hybrid D where you have a swing man who goes back and forth

I agree that we will almost certainly remain in a 3-4, but I'm not sure how you can call Timmons and Heyward our only 4-3 personnel. I think Heyward can play anywhere in a 3 or 4 man front other than an outside DE in a 4-3 (7 tech or wider). Timmons doesn't seem to me to have the range to be the solo man in the middle, and I think he's clearly more at home in a 3-4. To me McClendon plays his best when he lines up offset in a gap, and penetrates. That's going to happen more in a 4-3 than a 3-4. I see him as being perhaps better as a 1 tech in a 4-3 than a zero tech in a 3-4. To me Spence and Shazier are classic 4-3 Will backers who are being rebuilt into 3-4 ILBs. They were both drafted based on their dominant play in college behind 4 man fronts, and have yet to show similar play here (although they obviously haven't had enough opportunity to grade them yet). I'm not going to keep going on player by player, but I think we're a lot closer to having quality 4-3 personnel than you seem to think we are.

Butler says we will run 4-3 as well. He also stated he wanted his scheme to fit his players . Butler also said that we needed speed and Athletic ability on the back end .

What I predict from that is more Beef on the DL and better coverage guys on the back . In a ideal world we will get pressure with 4 or 5 and have more to cover . I hope to see a lot of Big Dan and Mclendon on the field at the same time . Then mix Tuitt and Heyward with JJ and play the strong ILB'S .

Good Post,I hear what you are saying, but I agree to disagree.... Tuitt was strictly a 5 tech at ND and Heyward played in the 4-3 at ohio st... They could possible convert to DTs, but who is really going to be the DEs and what are you gonna do with Mccullers and McClendon...McClendon might be able to run a 1 tech, but he would have to learn a whole new defensive technique. I just don't know who is going to be our Pass rush DEs??? Dwight Freeney isn't on our roster right now.... As far as spence goes I see him struggling big time in a 4-3 and what about JArvis Jones...you are just going to throw away your first round pick? his supposed strength is rushing the passer...not drop into coverage and the same with Worilds...Strength is Rushing the passer not dropping into coverage...I could see some hybrid looks those disguising the fronts ala baltimore, but a complete switch to a 4-3 I do not see happening .... a lot of guys would have to learn a lot of new techniques. Just look how the eagles struggled for 2 years with the transition to a 3-4...not having the right personnel sets you back a few years.... Youre right about Shazier... I forgot about him because he was on the field for about 45 seconds this year

He said 4-3 looks but staying in the 3-4...its a hybrid look that they will occasionally show imo

We currently are, 3-4 in running situations and 4-3 in passing situations.

They aren't running a 4-3 on passing downs....its more of a sub package...where its not just a standard 4-3....its 5 defensive backs on the field and trying to create pressure from multiple spots.... usually you will see a 3-3-5 alignment maybe a 4-2-5 with not all 4 being DL

Your right, that sure seems what they do... Keith Butler's interview sure was cryptic though, I am still trying to figure out what he meant about his intentions for the 3-4?

He either meant we are going to do what we always have been doing it, or that the Steelers base will still be 3-4, but they are going to really change it up in the sub packages?

Yes but they are still essentially in a 4-3, according to Butler anyway.

They changed DCs because Butler contract was up, and they didn't want to lose him.

I see. We cut ties with the DC of the last 11 years, a guy who would have stayed another 11, because we wanted everything to stay exactly the same. They probably are hoping Butler does everything exactly like LeBeau would have!
