Interesting that Butler started out under Chris Palmer in 1999 who had coached for Bill Belickick.

Based on what we saw this season I think it's Porter

Gerry Dulac in the P-G saying that LeBeau has already talked to Arians.

edit: Meant to add they talked about Lebeau as replacement for Arizona's DC Bowles, who might get a head coaching job. Dulac has no report of the outcome of this talk.

Seems like the perfect fit for him if Bowles leaves. I could see him in a defensive consultant role in Tennessee, too.

I hope so, and think it's in the team's best interest.

But... if Coach LeBeau gets a DC job, he'll most likely get Joey go with him.
Of all players LeBeau coached, IMO there are few as close as Porter to him.

Troy is also close to LeBeau. Could get to be another fun topic here.

Yeah, makes sense that both are former coaches that "retired" mutually

I wish Coach Butler the best.
He's landed on a spot with one of the most complicated shoes to fill in the whole NFL.

After conducting an exhaustive nationwide search, Mike Tomlin has once again concluded that the best man for the job is someone with ties to the Steelers that predate his own.

I am SHOCKED! SHOCKED I SAY! Now I think I'm gonna go start a "Who's gonna replace Butler as next, next Steelers DC?" thread because without speculation where would we be around here? LOL.

I really could see the bungles firing Marvin Lewis and hiring DL as their HC. Sorry. I just had to go there. LOL. I'm preparing myself to not like him if he goes to AZ. Just kidding.

Once again? I'd say his early decisions (like Arians/LeBeau) were good ones, considering the Super Bowl we won in year 2. I guess you could be talking about Lake the position coach pretty much everyone agrees has helped the team, and Porter, the assistant position coach. The only other coordinator change was Todd Haley, and what were his ties, exactly? He was a fan?

:applaud: Congrats, looking forward to seeing what he brings to the table.

Here's a little bio on him:

    • Butler, a native of Anniston, Alabama, has never lost his southern drawl. He is a straight talker who doesn’t shy away from offering blunt assessments of his players. As with the linebackers he has coached with the Steelers, players will know exactly where they stand with Butler if he becomes Pittsburgh’s next defensive coordinator.
    • Butler, who turns 59 in May, has helped develop a number of Steelers linebackers, including Larry Foote, James Harrison, Lawrence Timmons and LaMarr Woodley, who was a premier pass-rusher before chronic soft-tissue injuries derailed his career in Pittsburgh.
    • Pro Football Weekly named Butler its NFL linebackers coach of the year after the 2008 season. Harrison won Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year after recording 16 sacks. He also turned in one of the greatest plays in Super Bowl history when he returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown. Inside linebacker James Farrior recorded 133 tackles and 3.5 sacks and joined Harrison on the All-Pro teams. Woodley added 11.5 sacks in 2008, his first season as a starter in the NFL.
    • Butler played 10 seasons in the NFL, all with the Seattle Seahawks, and his 813 career tackles rank second in franchise history. Butler, who had been an All-American linebacker at the University of Memphis, started 132 of 146 career games in Seattle. He retired after the 1987 season.
    • Butler returned to his alma mater in 1990 and coached the linebackers, defensive ends and special teams in eight seasons at Memphis. Butler moved on to Arkansas State in 1998 where he served as the defensive coordinator for one season. He broke into the NFL in 1999 and coached the Cleveland Browns' linebackers for four seasons. Butler joined Bill Cowher’s staff in Pittsburgh in 2003.
