I still like the 3-4, it just needs to be tweaked.

If Butler is unwilling to do that I could see Tomlin going elsewhere. Wasn't Tomlin a DB's coach? I'm sure the way we run our secondary has to drive up the wall.

Also, how often are we in the base 3-4. We really need to make sure we have the guys to play the Nickel, which we seem to be in more often.

The team gave Butler a raise to no go become a DC, hoping to keep him around as the heir apparent. That is true. They did that when the defense was dominant. That is also true. The defense is not dominant anymore. Perhaps the situation has changed. Perhaps, Tomlin will influence the defense more if he doesn't have a guy who has been here in the system since Cowher. What I'm saying is, the situation has changed. Butler is a grown man, he chose to take more $ to stay with Pittsburgh than go become a DC with another team. Should Tomlin, Colbert, and Rooney decide to go a different direction, I don't think it would be a reflection on Butler, but more so because the situation calls for a drastic change.

I think the more time that goes by without naming Butler the DC the more likely it is the Steelers may be considering an option other than Keith Butler.

Butler is scheduled to meet Tomlin today. After today or tomorrow if they have not announced anything, then I think they will be looking elsewhere for a DC. My bet it will be Butler, but I hope he changes it up some. The defense is dated.

Today is Monday. I assume they will do their due diligence and interview more than just Butler. It's only fair to give Butler a few days to prepare for the interview.

I would think he has spent his time supporting DL. In the interview, he will need to separate himself from DL, and say what he would do to right the ship. I he already knew what he wanted to do to change, one must wonder if he was holding back, if his ideas fell on deaf ears, or somewhere in between.

It wouldn't be the first time that someone in a job was told... "hey stick around, we'll give you more money... the job will be yours".... only to hear "we'd like to go in a different direction".

Nobody is going to know for sure who the next DC is until they announce it. I don't believe there is any "Rooney rule" for hiring coordinators. My thoughts are.... Butler has been here longer than Tomlin, right? Tomlin may have different ideas on the defensive direction and hiring, who knows.

Also, Butler has been a part of our failing defense, if he has the "it" factor, why hasn't he shown it on our defense recently?

I don't pretend to know what goes on behind closed doors, those are just my thoughts.

If Butler is the next DC, does that mean Joey Porter is our next LB coach?

Wouldn't be shocked, although I think I'd prefer Olsavsky as he was ILB if memory serves me. I think as an ILB Olsavsky had to be aware of more things than an OLB, which may make for a better coach.

Olsavsky has been here longer, I'm assuming he would be the guy.

The Rooney rule only applies to hiring head coaches and senior management officials: So there is no interview needed for minority assistant coaches, Butler is the guy unless the Rooney's want to break their promise..

keeping coaches other than the DC also requires those guys to know a different defense than the 3-4 if indeed they are going to change it up. porter and jerry, carnell and maybe even john mitchell for that matter have only played in and been involved in coaching the 3-4 as pro coaches. I wouldn't assume anyone sticks if that's the case.

I will also say keith butler should go through the process to give his assessment of his idea's. it would be highly irresponsible for the steelers front office to do anything but. of course that doesn't mean they will necessarily, there have been questionable decisions in the past.

There's nothing wrong with keeping your options open...at least for a short while. See who is available and maybe an interview or two.

It makes absolutely no sense. You'd be running the exact same system with someone who has a lesser understanding of it.

The only reason to hire the underling is for continuity. Continuity and change don't mix very well.

Sure they can depending on how you are defining continuity and change. Continuity as in terminology and actually plays is just fine if you change the situational play calling. For example, if it's 3rd and 7, do you play a 3 man rush and 10 yards off the receiver or do you send 5 and play tight?

Personally, I don't see it mattering if we don't upgrade the talent.

Wish I had your seat in that meeting with DL.

I can think of other reasons. And yes they can.

How often do you need to see something before the pattern becomes obvious?
