I think it's time for Jason worilds to step it up this year. at nearly 10 million dollars we have paid for him, it's time to show some worth. 59 tackles on the year with 20 of those being assists. not what we need from a guy that expects to be paid well and complained he wasn't being used enough. well we need you playing like you did last year when you wanted paid. nows the time to step it up.

after the season is over, use his money to sign Ben, McCain, Blake, DeCastro and Beachum..then get an OLB in the draft..the Steelers overpaid him big time..

Yessir! Would be nice to see him wreck house this post season though. I'd keep him if he wants to be fair at the table, but I'm willing to bet he won't.

We're in a bad position. If we're to remain in the base 3-4 we need a solid central unmovable base @ NT and at the very least a very good pass rushing OLB. We have a good OLB in Worilds but JJ is underperforming. James is aging and Moats is really a 4-3 OLB. McLendon is a good DT but not the typical unmovable NT required So why pay Worilds?

There's really on two 3-4 OLB on the market, Orakpo and Worilds and Orakpo is injury proned and highly priced. Worilds will be the most desired 3-4 OLB and his "initial" price is set @ a little over 9mil per year.

I can't see us keeping him at that price with our current cap, and other needs across the board on defense plus extending Big Ben. Moats is a very good defender. Shazier and Williams & Spence are young and will be very solid LBers. We still have Timmons for a few years. All 5 of these LB have played and translate to a 4-3 base quite well.

I know I sound like a broken record but I just don't see how or why we should keep Worilds .

a few things regarding your post...I would love to go to a 4-3, but not sure if we will see that..secondly, it would not surprise me if a team like the Redskins give Worilds a ton of money and he leaves (plus he is from Virginia).

If they do stick to a 3-4 then you need a NT, OLB and CB in the draft...

Cajun..if they do go to a 4-3 who would you start at the linebacking positions?

I don't want to derail this thread. Worilds, as good as he is, can't be compared to Porter, Gildon, a Younger Harrison or Ware or even Woodley. For the price he'll command and likely get he'll need to be that good for us since he won't have a comrade on the other side or a NT that shuts down the middle.

As far as the 4-3 goes we'll struggle to fill that too. The Lbers will be fine. The DL we have can easily and effectively play the interior in the 4-3. Thing is in todays NFL you have to pressure the QB no matter the scheme. Heyward and Maybe Tuitt due to his motor could play the 4-3 DE ( 6&7 Tech ) like Suggs does but we'd really need a speed rusher like Freeney who played the 9-Tech when he was with the colts and those guys are also rare & expensive.

I was about to start a thread about Worilds before I saw this one, as I was interested to gauge how people feel his performance has been this season, given the expectations at the start of the year.

39 tackles and 20 assists. 7.5 sacks and 1 int. 2 pass def.

I seem to remember a thread about how many sacks people would be happy with him getting. Are people happy with this production? Clearly, mac isn't... what about everyone else?

On a smaller contract, I'd be happy that he's quietly getting it done (remember that we weren't really using the OLBs to blitz earlier in the season, a lot of coverage going on. I think the development of our ILBers, as well as Tuitt and McCullers, would help him improve his production next season.

BUT, for the money he's on at the moment, we need to see more. I'm not sure he's made too many heads turn to command a huge FA contract.

it's not just the sacks. run stopping and a sense of urgency that this defense needs for the playoffs. this would be a good time to see some splash plays from him. his season so far to me has been pretty mediocre. we need the heat turned up a notch for these playoffs by him. he got the money now show us the goods.

When your out in coverage it's hard to rush the passer. Finally LeBeau trusts his secondary more and is using Worilds for what he was signed for.

The OLB position is going to be a need after the season. Maybe they can talk Harrison back for another go. Moats is a good back up. And i'm still waiting for Jones to put it all together. The jury is still out as far as i'm concerned. Worilds will be in demand. And with the Ben contract looming I believe he will be good as gone. Defense will be a priority for sure and picking another OLB high at this time seems it might be in the wings. Gonna be a Defensive draft that's for sure.

He didn't play as well as I hoped or expected he would.

But he did play alright. He's a legit force against RTs for offenses to worry about. The number of sacks is a more Robin than Batman, but I believe he's always done a good job racking up the hits and hurries. I don't have the stats on me to back that up, but PFF has said that a number of times. (I'm no fan of theirs, but they track those stats and I don't.)

In addition to that, he did some things we haven't had in recent years from our LOLB. He played the role of QB spy for us, and he did it well. He was much more athletic and sudden than Woodley, and that showed up in coverage and running people down. His run defense was a step down from Woodley, although it was still decent.

Bottom line for me is... I like him, I'd be happy to keep him and start him... But not at the price we're paying now, and not at a price he'll likely be able to get elsewhere. I expect this to be his last season with us.

At least until 2018, when we bring him back.

Maybe a month back, somebody brought up the conversation of pay vs production. I believe
I asked what the board members would be willing to pay for this type of production. I thought I gave a very reasonable and ATTAINIBLE stats for the OLB position 12 sacks
75 tackles, QB hurries, 2 fumble recovery's 2 int's. I believe if we are going to pay the amount of money we are paying Worilds. That his numbers should atleast meet the above numbers.
    Don't you think?

I think Worilds is a lot better than the stats indicate. I believe he doesn't get sacks and a ton of tackles because DL uses him more in coverage than he does actually rushing the passer. I don't remember seeing Woodley drop into coverage on 3rd downs as much as I see Worilds drop but the secondary was a little better for Woodley's prime years. I don't think he is worth a huge salary but I'd hate to lose him.

I was hoping to see more of it last week but it was only for a few plays and that is more of a rotation of our OLBs to keep them fresh. Steady pressure from the outside will be a major key in this game, keep Flake-o s feet happy. There's no reason why JJ and Moats can't give us a boost in that department.

Also so what do you guys think, does Troy play? Do you think he has a couple good plays/games left in him?

I think a lot of that is he Worilds is out in coverage a lot. If we keep McCain, Blake, Big Play, the rest of the corners are ok, Like to see Shamarko and someone besides Mitchell. Mitchell is ok in coverage but he pisses me off getting up chirping and pushing. He does it a lot on 3rd down stops, that will start to cost us 15 yds. We need a fairly tall safety in there. Then get a few DB's late in the draft or UDFA. McCain made me a believer when he shut Green down when Ike went out in Cincy

I don't think we will miss him. I was specifically watching him in the Bengals game. Every long run was to his side. He doesn't seal the edge at all. He gets pushed inside and lets the RB turn the corner.

I'm kind of torn on Worilds. There are times when he looks like he's rounding into a solid starter, but there are some long droughts between those times when he looks more like a backup filling in while the real starter is out. He is spotty in run defense, with a few nice stops sandwiched between long stretches of being easily controlled and losing contain. He's a bit better as a pass rusher, but still too hot and cold to be "the guy." I'd love to keep him on the roster, but I'd be pretty concerned if we gave him a bunch of guaranteed $$$.

I'm not even worried about next year. I want to see him go into beast mode for the playoffs this week. earn the money he's been paid this year as our top OLB. make game changing plays because we need them now. next year will work itself out, let's finish this one first. that's why I started this thread.

I think he's pretty d@m good myself, but the question is, has it been enough?

IMHO, no. I need to see more from him starting Sat night.
