With 1:47 left on the clock, no time outs and down by 11 points, KC elected to take the easy 3 and try the onside kick to get a td plus 2 point conversion. It failed and I can't remember ever seeing any team either tying or winning a game with that strategy. I understand the strategy but the likelyhood of it actually working out is slim to none and slim is heading for the exits.

    Here's my questions.
    A) Under 2 minutes, no timeouts, down by either 9, 10 or 11 points.
Has any NFL team pulled this off with actually winning a game?

    B) Would anybody here go for the 8 first?
If you do recover the onside, you are in better position for picking up enough yards for the field goal try.

At 3:03, they had the ball at our 34 yardline with 1 timeout. That's when I would have gone for a FG.

Then, with a normal kickoff, stop the opposite offense on 3 downs. That would give you the ball back with somewhere between 1:30 and 1:55 left, to go for the TD.
Don't know the exact odds, but I'm pretty sure they're higher to get a 3 & out than recovering an onside kick.

Instead, they consumed 2 more minutes, their last timeout and still went only for a FG.

Thats a 51 yard field goal with a rookie kicker at Heinz Field. You miss and the fan base wants to string you up.

I agree with the strategy though. Just don't know if many coaches have the cajones to do exactly that.

Andy Reid has always had some questionable playcalling situations. While you'd think you'd go for the TD first, you have to score 11 points, regardless of how you get there. I can understand why they did it.

Yes, you're right. It's not like kicking in any other stadium.

But let's think you're KC, where no WR has caught a TD pass so far.
Was he thinking he would have had the football back with 1:20, no timeouts and score on a deep throw? And after that, convert a 2pt try just to tie the game?

I mean, with your season on the line, you've got to take some risks. Better put your kicker on that position, than your QB and WRs on the other. Just sayin'

I don't think you can knock him for going for the 3 there with 2 minutes on the clock - when you are driving and inside the 30 you are working towards a touchdown your ultimate goal. Where you really have to question Reid is going for it on 4th and a half yard with 30 seconds on the clock before halftime. That was stupid, you probably have a sure 3 there and you should take it because points are at a premium. It also would have allowed him to try to go for it on 4th down on their last drive where they would have been only down by one possession, not two.

I admit I was pretty surprised when they kicked the FG.

I mean the pats gave up a safety in order to try and get the ball back in better field position and it worked and they won. I believe it was against the bills so anything is possible.

The more I think about it. I'm going for the TD and possible 2 pt. conversion. Balls on the 6 yard line. The playbook is wide open even for the most inept qb's out there. Getting a TD and even missing the 2 pt conversion, you still have onside the kick. I beleive I heard the onside kick percentage this year is 4% so if you get that ever slim chance you still have a about a buck 37 to work with to get a TD.
If you do make the 2 pts, then the short field is still available for the FG try.

Either way your odds are stacked way against you. Might as well get the most points you can.

I like the decision to make it a 1 score game..... Look at the Ravens..... Stupid Hairball was down 12 points.... and went for 2 pt conversion..... WHY, I ask WHY? Conversion failed and they remained 12 points down.... a simple kick would have made it an 11 point game.
