It's a common misconception I believe what they are getting at and if you look at one of the stickies for the Steeler Nation NFL films piece it makes the point as well, that the fans aren't traveling from Pittsburgh but rather are Western PA natives that have spread through out the country as the Steel industry slumped. My family is from a little town called Marienville up in the Allegheny Forest, my Dad was an MP in the Air Force and was given 3 duty stations to chose from. He chose North Dakota and that is where we ended up staying. One of my earliest Steeler memories was getting a Christmas care package from back home in PA and it had the black and gold yarn ball hat that I loved and a long sleeve One For the Thumb t-shirt that I wore until it was short sleeve. During the run in 05 I was one of the thousands who took over the Metrodome when the team was there to play the Vikings, took my Dad to his first NFL game that day and as his health starts to decline I am glad I have that memory of him and the Steelers.

Cool story..and your right about the NFL films piece.

I also think that the announcers use that term as a generic way of saying that the fans "travel" in other words, the Steelers fan base, as a whole gravitates to where the team is. In other words, wherever they are playing you are sure to find a Steelers fan...

    Remember this..
The line, "Just go and lay your hand on a Pittsburgh Steelers fan" stems from Daniels' feeling that the people in Pittsburgh are "The salt of the earth, the finest, just the greatest people. The strength of America." He says, "I've gone to ball games at different places, but I've always felt the Pittsburgh Steelers fans, especially in the old stadium - I mean, they're steel workers and they're good old guys with blisters, or calluses on their hands. The strength of America is not in Washington D.C., It's in our people, it's on the farms, in the factories. It's the people out here that make this country work. The truck drivers, the farmers. And these people, that's what they were, and I just felt like if you want to go to war, let me take some of these guys with me. Go lay your hand on a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and you're gonna find out what American anger is, because it's the kind of people they are." (Check out our interview with Charlie Daniels.)

That is not my interview.. I copied and pasted that--I have no idea how do the "linking thing".

We have all seen the astronauts flying their terrible towels, so yea!... Steelers fans travel well.
