    McCain has been a bright spot on a dull Defense.

    I'm going to go out on a limb here and say, ready, need new blood running this Defense. They're, I said it.

    I don't get into stats, I watch the games. The eye test. The schemes are old as the guy calling them. The opposing Offenses know what's coming. Eye test.

    And corners are not the first priority in this draft? If they draft another LB high i'm going to go over the edge!

    Oh, and the 9 million dollar man who is supposed to be a PASS RUSHER is out in coverage more then rushing the passer? Guess because the secondary is playing so well.

    Yes, without pressure the opposing offense has a better chance of success if you have NO one to cover properly.

    Time for the outdated, stunting player growth, complicated scheme to ride of into the sunset. If not, BA style.

    And whoever gave the green light on Cam Thomas should apologize to every Steeler fan that has to watch that garbage.

    No doubt. There should be a black page on steelers.com each week, and a message from Tomlin: "It is with the greatest regret that I have to announce to you that Cam Thomas will be starting this week."

    I probably post once or twice a year on this message board for the very simple fact I am too lazy to login and comment. However, I do read this board everyday. Today I felt the need to comment because of this particular subject.
    For years I have been screaming, at the end of each game, how many sacks and QB pressures did the Steelers have today?
    The inability to sack the QB and get pressure, i.e. disrupt the timing and rythm, by the OLB and DL has been mind boggling. This team desperately needs DL help first then OLB help then CB. I really would like them to switch to a 4-3 and say goodbye to Coach D.
    Just my 2 cents.

    Lebeau has become very conservative... we used to blitz a heck of a lot more back in the day.

    Now, he only brings it when we have a safe lead now.

    And our D changed when Troy came and I'm not sure now that Troy is in his twilight we are able to go back to how we used to do things.

    That Colts game he actually was more aggressive in his calling and it showed.

    Not sure how to convince you guys this , but the front 7 can be negated by the scheme if you have no coverage on the backend . Gone are the days of under Center drop back passing against a strong front 7. Teams just put there QB in the gun 7 yards deep.

    At 7 yards if unblocked the QB still has around 1.5 seconds to release the ball , so if you have DB'S who can't cover for at least 1.5 seconds then it doesn't matter if you have a All Madden front 7... Now add in the 4 and 5 WR looks and you need at least 4 or 5 better than average CB'S .

    You need at least 1 lock down CB and at least one ball hawk at the safety spot and then you can start looking at the front end ...

    washington= 9th 15 in passing 27th in points
    chicago= 10th 30 in passing 30th in points

    top 10 rush defense/top 10 in points
    arizona= bad pass D
    lions= good pass D
    seattle= good pass D
    baltimore = bad pass D
    buffalo= good pass D
    san fran= good pass D

    top 10 pass D/top 10 in points
    kansas city= bad rush D
    miami= bad rush d
    cleveland= bad rush d
    so yeah it does seem pass defense is correlated with points allowed. I will say this, jets and skins are good in pass and rush but bottom of the barrel in points allowed. I think not allowing the big play and red zone defense are the key!

    I say we really do need some corners and safeties. oh and some better LB play. oh, and a NT that can stay on the field and be productive. I love mclendon and he's one heck of a player that could have made a he** of a difference, but as I asked before the season began, is he worth it if he can't be out there? should we hold on to him after this season?:cool:

    You need some playmakers IMO, especially with a weak pass rush. Look at Seattle they have 3 Pro Bowlers in their secondary, the Steelers don't have anybody close to a Pro Bowl level on defense. The Steelers may not need a Revis type of lockdown CB, but they need to upgrade the talent.

    seattle also has one heck of a pass rush that makes those DB's a lot better. it takes all phases of the defense to be a good unit.:cool:

    I'll argue the opposite. With today's rules, CB is IMO the least important position in the NFL. It doesn't matter who you have playing the position of you don't get to the QB. Patrick Peterson and Antonio Cromartie (possibly the best CB tandem in the league) gave up 190 yards receiving to Julio Jones. They got straight gashed. Richard Shreman got owned by DeSean Jackson and Odell Beckham Jr. this year already. Joe Haden gives up huge games to AB and other speedy receivers... Literally we could have the best 2 corners in the league and still have a horrible pass defense if we can't get to the qb. Our front 7 is in transition, and that is why we give up points. As soon as our young guys up from (JJ, Shazier, Tuitt, McCullers, McLendon) start to get it, we will see our defense improve dramatically. We really only need one more "high level" corner. We can manage with a guy like Ike used to be and Gay, McCain, and Blake.

    Why not try to have both a good D-line and some decent CBs. I'm sorry but a group of Gay, McCain, and Blake doesn't inspire much confidence.

    I think we will have to agree to disagree. I kind of like Seattle's defense.

    :this!: I would like to see some better talent behind them but totally agree about pressure up front, definitely more important.

    Horrible you say with probably the two best safety's to ever play the game SS Dave Duerson and FS Gary Fencik, and two cornerbacks Leslie Frazer right corner and Mike Richardson at left corner who had 10 picks between them in 85, nothing horrible about these 4 DBs on the back end, they played really physical lockdown football.....

    Do you know that Teams run 7 on 7 drills all the time ? The main reason is the Shot Gun can negate the play of the OL and the DL , no need to have them banging each other on quick read offense .And can you really tell yourself you would line this group of CB'S up against the Pats ,Broncos,Green Bay ?

    You make a great point great CB's do get owned from time to time , but that allows the Team Defense to concentrate on other areas . And in the games they lock down the #1 WR'S their Team Defense smothers Offenses ....
    One last point that should prove the CB and Safety spots are more Important. How many Sub packages do the #1 and #2 CB come off the field ? Answer please.

    How many snaps do the starting FS and the SS come off the field ? Answer please.

    How often do the DL get changed up front ?
    How often do they change the # of LB'S on the field ?

    So if you answer those questions then it is obvious the 4 key DB'S are more important because they have a more impact on the entire Defense. They are needed on running downs ,they are needed on passing downs , they are needed on short yardage , they are needed on long yardage they are needed in the redzone packages . They are needed everywhere the entire game...How can you start building a great Defense at another position and say that is more Important ?

    No way to convince me part time players or specialist are more valuable than true Starters .

    If it is not he has his exact same views...lol.... Just a very bad approach to invest the same money in part time employees as you do your full time ones , and to value guys who work 3 days a week as more valuable than the guys who work 7 days a week ...

    My math predicts this will equal poor production and poor production is exactly what we see ...Note to Colbert stop investing in part time employees and get us some full time workers to man the 1st . shift we can find some guys later in the draft to cover the 2nd. and 3rd. shift....

    Heck if we get the production up high enough we might not even need to run the 2nd. and 3rd. shift. Not sure Colbert is the guy to run our plant actually he is not he has had plenty of time and the production is just getting worse and the few full time employees he does have are past retirement age. Time to throw the baby out with the bath water.....

    :facepalm: Yeah the Steelers don't need CBs, let's keep drafting guys in the later rounds who can't play at all Curtis Brown, Terry Hawthorne, Shaq Richardson.
