They should find somebody else for the job, it looks like they instructed him to fair catch and that's it. The offense has to start at the ten yard line on almost every drive, why not try Wheaton or DHB or a backup DB.

Problem with Archer is that even if he catches it midfield - he'll somehow manage to back it up to our own 13 - his favorite spot on the field (maybe he lost some bling there at some point and is still looking for it).

Fielding punts can be very hard.. Not just anyone can field punts , not just anyone can judge how far the guys are away from them ..I am fine with a fair catch unless we have a lot of space ...Our O is playing so good not to concerned with our field position...

If the kick is inside our 20, it's going to be fair caught 95% of the time anyways. If we force punts deeper in the opponents territory, AB will have more space to make a play on a return. He's arguably the best punt returner in the NFL... No need to take him off duty for fair catches. Plus, I don't ever had a fear of him muffing one, so as long as they're kicking us inside our 20, I'd want AB back there catching them.

Reminiscent of ARE returning punts lol. Dude would go east and west cover about 30 yards doing so and have only gain about 5 lol

    maybe

he just runs to the area that matches his jersey number but never passing the 50

    our side of field
    13 yard line

I BLAME THE COACHES FOR NOT COACHING HIM THAT IT IS OKAY FOR HIM TO GO TO THE OPPONENTS SIDE OF THE FIELD!!!

    damn you tomlin....

Agree with most of what you said, but wht scares me he is just one hit/cheap shot frm getting hrt. A nd i for one dont want our best wr/ the best wr in league getting hrt on a punt retrn..... there has to be someone on this team thats capable of retrning punts...

Well they tried Bryant in pre season and he muffed one I think, though he didn't lose the fumble. They obviously could try Archer, but I feel like if they were comfortable with him at all he'd already be out there. I think the plan is for Archer to take the duties eventually, but AB sets a high standard for the level of play that is "acceptable".

In short... If we had someone capable enough at this moment, he'd be out there. Apparently we don't.

I want AB returning punts. He is always a threat to take it back for a good return and he is sure-handed. I rarely see punt returners injured, so to me that is not a valid concern (I se more receivers hurt in normal play than punt returners).

I hold my breath every time we receive a punt. No way do I want my top 5 WR back there returning punts. Just dumb!!

Why? I almost never see a punt returner get injured and he is electric. Do you think anyone cringed with Hester returning? Or Cribbs? Dion Sanders did it, Rod Woodson did it, many starters return punts with no adverse effects.

Was Hester or Cribbs or Sanders or Woodson the offensive weapon AB is? He is a top 5 if not a top 3 WR. Why put him out there to return punts? All it takes is one hit. I could live with him going down as a WR thats his job and thats the game. NO REASON to have him returning punts none!!!

As of right now we do not have anyone better. Archer obviously hasn't faired well in the kick return game, so surely they won't put just anyone back there. I'd rather not have someone who is inexperienced and muff one. That can take the wind out of the sails of any team.. I'm sure AB has been instructed to return only the returnable punts and to either fair catch or let the non-returnable punts go.
