The run defense has improved, but less Cam Thomas and more Tuitt can't be a bad thing. Hopefully Aaron Smith gave him some pointers during his visit yesterday.

He's got a nice round face. I was hoping the Steelers would start dominating if they ever got a round Tuitt.

    Snap Counts by Week:

    10
    14
    10
    3
    12

Not sure I see this "getting ready" opinion from the coaches. Nothing has changed since week 1.

For some reason I thought he wasn't dressed for Week 1. I hadn't actually realised he'd been on the field this much.

Hey Thigpen I'm at Disneyworld right now and haven't been able to check the board too much but I signed on for a minute to see how things are going and I saw your avatar and started dying laughing and my wife is wondering what is so funny! I just kept laughing and said "nothing". LOL!!! That avatar is hilarious! I think I might change my name to "Pick 6 Edwards". LOL!!! Also I think the board should be renamed to glennedwards.com. HA!!!

Weird, according to the article I posted, it indicated his playing time has come primarily on ST. Made it sound like these 12 snaps is the first real playing time hes had.

At any rate, I'm sure each week he gets closer to starting, cant be very hard to bump Thomas.

Just saw that, now thats funny :lolol:

Cam Thomas snap counts (defense only, not special teams):

    46 (69%)
    45 (66%)
    37 (60%)
    33 (51%)
    28 (50%)

Total 189 (59%). He's heading in the right direction.

We are averaging 2.65 D-linemen per defensive play, 4.03 linebackers per defensive play and 4.32 defensive backs per defensive play.

Lebeau is back to his old ways of using 4 linebackers exclusively and only rarely going to nickle coverage (about 35%). We have not played dime coverage once all year.

Interesting. If Shazier and Spence are around, then the lack of dime is more explainable to a point. Also our lack of significant depth at the CB position. Maybe once Sharmarko Thomas is back, there will be more use of extra DB sets?

Lebeau has always preferred to use 4 LB's. In fact, he'd love to use the SAME four linebackers and never, ever change.

Part of the real problem last year was the teams unpreparedness after the loss of Larry Foote. You saw from the snap counts that Lebeau tried to continue the "plan" and use 4 LB's but the defense just went to hell.

After the bye week, the team completely morphed into a nickle/dime defense using Polamalu closer to the line of scrimmage. That wasn't much better, but it plugged the leak.

I think the panic at losing Foote, seeing Williams/Gavin actually play and not knowing the status of Sean Spence really forced the selection of Shazier. And Tomlin's input and love for runner-hitters pushed the pick to Shazier over Mosely.

Lebeau is just very uncomfortable not having 4 LB's on the field.

Based on offensive snap counts, Haley is running the following groupings:

    1 Back, 1 TE, 3 WR (11-personnel) = 55%
    1 Back, 2 TE, 2 WR (12-personnel) = 33% (includes Will Johnson as a FB/TE)
    1 Back, 3 TE, 1 WR (heavy) = 2-3%
    1 Back, 4 WR or 5-Wide (Spread) = 9-10%

In the 12 personnel groupings it's about 60% Spaeth and 40% Johnson being used right now.

See it's that first grouping that bothers me. If they are using 3 wr's then it should be Moore (when healthy) over Justin Brown because this formation screams pass first run second to me. Moore is the more polished slot receiver and in order for Brown's better blocking is be a factor in the grouping Bell has to be able to get beyond the line of scrimmage and the initial blocking by the OL and TE.

you know what gets me is that I was thinking Mosely was bigger than Shazier! Not that much according to the stats! 6'2" for both 234 for C.J 229 for Shazier.

Maybe the better blocking ability of Brown HAS lead to a better running game this year. Perhaps the coaches do know what they are doing and that Moore, while a better slot reciever than Brown at this point, just doesnt contribute to the success in the running game. This game is all about balance and keeping the defense guessing. So if we present a pass first grouping and the slot WR blocks down better on the OLB or safety, creating better lanes for Bell and Blount, the success we have seen there can be worth the decision of Brown over Moore.

I agree maybe time to pull out a LB and insert another DL from time to time ...
