If the job is too much for him, simply resign

I think what he said was a far cry from calling a "players coach" label racist, but it was still a stupid thing to say.

What I mean is it sounds like he got the interview because of the Rooney rule, and whatever happened in the interview got him in the running for the job. If not for the interview though, there's no job. The rule didn't get him hired, but it got his foot in the door and he obviously did the rest. Either way, no Rooney rule = no coach Tomlin in Pittsburgh.

I'm with Terry Bradshaw and what he said at the end. I don't understand what Tomlin is talking about either. Because of your race? Really, Tomlin? Where in the world did that come from??? I think he's bought into his own press, which has been, by and large, more positive than he deserves given the performance of the team the last few seasons.

Since when? They call Pete Carroll a player's coach. Jon Gruden and Bill Cowher were both called player's coaches. So was Tony Dungy. I always took it to be a compliment. As in, a coach players want to play for. A coach who motivates not by fear, but by leading.

It wasn't until today that I ever heard that it may be derogatory.

Maybe I'm the naive one, and all those other coaches were getting dissed too.

I've personally always meant it to be derogatory. But what I've always considered one though was a guy that seemed a little TOO much like their buddy to get results out of them. That's always been what I consider a player's coach.

He brought race up and made it an issue. That's a pretty heavy implication to be throwing around.

Well then I'm naive and I can't believe the open disrespect some future HoF coaches were getting their entire careers.

Really? I don't hear the phrase all too often, but when I do, it's most often used about Tomlin by people who are insinuating that he isn't a good coach...but the players like him. If it's a compliment, why did the interviewer even bring it up and say what she did?

She was leading him because she knew HE didn't like the term. She asked him why.

He could have used any of the arguments people in this very thread used, and I would have been fine with that. But when he sloughs it off to it being personal, now I have a problem.

Sure, there's some people out there who DO have a problem with him based on things that don't matter (aka race). But they're a vast minority. Or am I being naive again?

I don't know about those other coaches but its definitely not a compliment when put towards Tomlin.

Welp say what ya want, but it's becoming rather apparent the last couple of years, that he is an average at best coach.

I think of a player's coach as a boss you'd like to work for. Most of the time at my job if there are bosses people like it is because they consider them "weak" and "pushovers" and things like that. I tell a lot people at work that most of our bosses are nothing more than "player's coaches" because they never hold anyone accountable because they are just buddies with them.

I rooted for his hiring. I loved having him as coach for a few years and thought we had something special in him. I used to defend him. I would love to be able to still do that.

But his schtick got old for me. The same deficiencies and chinks in the armor I saw as far back as 2008 (I remember someone in here arguing with me since we were SB bound how nothing was wrong) haven't improved: they've only got worse. I was more pointed towards DL with the defensive woes (can't get off the field on 3rd down, allowing easy scores any time a team gets a short field, going flat as soon as we go up by a TD or more, lack of turnover production, lack of solid coverage, dwindling pass rush). And I'll admit that he finally tried to address the o-line. It''s still a long work in progress though. And it should have been fixed 2-3 years ago!

But I have seen nothing in 5 seasons now that show me a reason to have faith. Sure, we rallied last season. I gave him props for that even if it was too little too late.

We are 18-18 in the last 36 games. 6-9 against BAD TEAMS in the last 15 outings.

I'd love to be able to chalk this game up to a bad game, one of those days, any given Sunday, yada yada yada. But today was a microcosm of everything that's been wrong with this team for YEARS.

The standard is the standard? What, exactly, is the standard? Sloppy, stupid football with no guts? Getting embarrassed on your own turf by the dregs of the league?

Ok. Guess I got the term wrong then.

When I was in the military, we had 2 kinds of Officers/NCOs. The type the men would follow into hell because they respected them, and the type who tried to rule with an iron fist over their peons and even though they were harsh, nobody respected them. I always took player's coach to mean the first one.

Dude I would kill for a Patton on the sidelines. A guy that does inspire you but can also knock you up side the head. I heard that once Patton saw some soldiers that were basically about to die and were wounded badly in an infirmary and he said "how are you soldier?" and they saluted and said "just fine General". They wanted to fight for him because they trusted his leadership but also knew if they messed up they were gonna hear about it. I would kill for a coach like that. He seems like he would be somewhere in between a player's coach and a CO.

What's funny about this is because I said the other night that the Rats game was sort of a microcosm as well. It was like a collective "moment of clarity" or something. It is obvious that we've got a LOT of the same problems that we've had for years.

It's difficult to compliment someone who is performing so poorly.
