I'm not really sure when you think Ben has been given a chance to carry a team.

Your assuming he will be able to walk. If the sacks continue on the pace they are now Ben will need a walker after 2 years.. Partly kidding but also serious.

It takes a smart front office and head coach to rebuild a team, they must know how to evaluate talent in the draft and FAgency, and know when to cut the umbilical cord with old players to balance out cap space, certainly we don't have that brain trust in place to rebuild this team, when you have a front office handing out big contracts to under performing old players, and a head coach in denial talking about going to the super bowl with an under performing team, then we have a big problem...

I disagree, the Steelers have been to 3 Super Bowls in the last 10 years and won 2 the Cowboys have won one playoff game in the last 18 years. You keep believing that lame garbage from ESPN radio. The Steelers are in a tough spot but every team will experience it.

There are people on this board who are oblivious to the fact that we've basically SUCKED WIND SINCE WE GOT TEBOWED IN 2011!!!!! And for goodness sakes don't say anything about Tomlin or question his coaching abilities because there are a few on this board who think Tomlin CAN DO NO WRONG!!!! To all you Mike Tomlin apologists out there tell me again why you think he's a good head coach. He inherited a team with solid veteran leadership and he was smart enough to get out of the way while they went to a couple more Super Bowls. I'll give him some credit for that but I give more credit to the veteran leadership he inherited. What's he doing now? He's not developing the talent he currently has and he's wasting the prime years of a franchise quarterback with his ineptitude as a head coach.

3 years since what???!!! Come on, Glenn! Get your head out of the sand!!!!

Ben will be gone eventually. Question is do you want to sign him to a big contract, sacrificing the rest of the roster and live in mediocrity for 5 years then deal with the big drop off when he retires, or cut bait now, stink but build a roster that will be competitive in 3-5 years? I can see both sides of the argument, but I choose option 2.

If you don't extend these two then they walk during free agency and you are looking at Brice McCain and Mike Adams replacing them.

Now I'm not saying that they are worth the money they signed for but if that's all you have you are stuck. At least until you get some better talent.

Come on Jack, you're better then that. I can come up with some colorful analogies for fans that always point fingers at the coaches if I chose to.

The job he did to finish 6-2 was a hell of a job IMO, he didn't lose the team and they finished strong. It's not making apologies, we had a team that got old and now trying to bring in new blood to reach the top again, there's going to be growing pains. That seems plain as day to me but to each their own.

i prefer mc cain and adams at 1 milion than jeopardy our cap for players of the same level more or less , do you realize that gilber if cut next year we will have to eat 6 milion sb , and if yo don't cut him he will get ben killed
the only way we can survive is or gilbert improve drammatically (never happen ) or he realize he suck and stoll the money and take a big pay cut

The line gave up like 6 sacks in the last 8 games last year, don't know which of those were attributed to Gilbert but unless you think he is going to get worse under Munchak, I think you are overstating things.

it would be different at many of the positions to let vets go, but the fact that colbert hasn't given us anybody that even shows a glimer of replacement value ready to step in.

keeping and extending two tackles that are just not good enough isn't going to help munchak show his true stripes.

if your not going to surround your franchise qb with good support, you might as well trade him. we have become a team of average or below is good enough.

a big reason i have said timmons may not be here alot longer too. he's got a heafty price tag attached to him.

    nine million for worilds? really?

yet we cut so'oto that made some game changing plays. molls the tackling machine against the run in the preseason gets cut and sent to the PS luckily.

shamarko, golden, blake, webb, mccain, really? how would we ever know if they can play or not? richardson? these guys need desperate field time so we can see them under game conditions. maybe it will be worse, and maybe not.

it's like they bring in low level backups to make the subpar guys that will make the team look better. it's like picking vileneuva (sp?) up and dumping every other guy you had in camp all year. he's not some LT ready guy what so ever and he's your only practice squad offensive lineman kept. there has to be a guy out there with a little more ready skills than him. at least as your only one. or at least something for munchak to at least start with.

we need an OT, TE, CB, FS, OLB, C/G, RB in the draft next year. let munchak pick his linemen. get a good T, CB, OLB and TE either in the draft or free agency. give these coaches something to work with. let's see mccullers, tuitt and cam h.. let's see spence, shazier and timmons blitzing from different spots and mixing them up in coverage. let's see shark and mitchell. let's see gay, allen and webb, or blake or mccain as the nickles. if we are not going to put playmaking starters on the field, we need to get these backups more time to show something with the starters. it's got to help their growth and the teams needs down the road alot clearer. they're on the team, use them.

You like to keep bringing that up, Blast, but you gloss over the fact that the team started 2-6 and looked flat, uninspired and unprepared for the first half of the season. And the season before he did a great job getting the team off to a 6-2 before finishing 2-6.

He's a great coach for about half a season.

The O-line contracts still never cease to amaze me. We are in this endless cycle of misjudging, and then overpaying, mediocre O-line talent. I had hoped that the back-to-back-to-back Starks/Colon/Kemoeatu debacles would have taught our decision makers something. Instead, we jump into the deep end with Gilbert, who has been utterly horrid since putting ink to paper (as opposed to being only mildly horrid before hand). I can almost cut the team slack for overpaying Pouncey because he's at least a solid player (although I think he's overrated as an "all pro").

I do get a bit peeved about the Woodley extension being called out as the worst though. At the time that we extended Woodley, he was a marquee pass rusher entering his prime, and we paid him market value. Our OLBs are the engine for our pass rush, and he was exceptional and improving. Even after he signed his deal, he racked up 8 or 9 sacks in the first half of the 2011 season, much of them without a healthy Harrison on the right side. It was only after his hamstring injury in 2011 that things went downhill. IMO it's revisionist history to call that a bad deal. I think anyone with eyes and a basic understanding of football could tell that our O-line deals were going to blow up on us, but not the Woodley deal. The Harrison contract didn't exactly hurt us either. If I recall, the dead money wasn't even as bad as Colon's.

Ben is not THE problem. But he is clearly part of the problem. It is a team effort. Right now, he is playing mediocre at best. He will not get better with age. Franchise him for a year or two, and prepare to move on.

Well it seems you guys want to dismiss anything good he does, anything that might deter your argument. However you specifically asked what has he done to make anyone think he's a good coach, I can't point to his early success because it was "Cowhers players" so I pointed to the good job he did during the second half last season, surely a bad coach couldnt have pulled that off? But low and behold, that doesn't count either because of the poor first half. SB's, 72-42 record, .632 winning percentage, finishing 6-2 last year, all conveniently dismissed for one reason or the other.

One other thing, what did the 2-6 finish the season before and 0-4 start last year have in common? Injuries, significant injuries, but that doesnt matter either, right? Naa, of course not.

Or, this team does actually have enough talent to play well in stretches, but isn't organized/coached well enough to maintain a higher level of consistency.

I found this, 7.25 sacks allowed last year

But even if 11 is correct, that doesn't even average out to a sack a game, that's getting your QB killed?

He's starting out poorly this year, no disputing that but not surprising with Munch tweaking his game, give him a little time for what he is learning to become second nature. It's also worth noting he has gone up against serious talent the first 2 games.
