I hope the Steelers coaches are teaching
fundamentals this week. Gosh knows we need it.
The CBA has hurt the NFL and the PGH Steelers.
Our players are seriously lacking in basic fundamental football. The Emperor use
to do this quite often, and you could see
improvement.Lets hope we can improve in this area.

Agree the CBA has hurt the Steelers. It has not seemed to hurt other teams as much - team leadership and natural fire?

i think the short week hurt. as they say the biggest jump for a team should come from game one to game two.

we are new and young at alot of spots and we have some key injuries to some guys we expected alot from. add the short week to that and a travel day and there wasn't time to do much coaching up of anyone.

ben and the vets were held out the first day. that doesn't help anyone else thats new and playing for the first time with them. let's also add, ben said he was really sore this week. he said he's usually sore from week one to week two, but this year he was really sore. age ben? alot of seasons ben? this could start to creep up on the old guy the rest of his career, i hate to tell him. father time is not gentle, especially for what he does.

yes, other teams seem like they are ahead of us and rightfully so. they have been through this awkward year of new players moreso than us. we have had quite an influx of players that are not used to one another yet and coaches that are not used to each other or the players yet. nor are they all that familiar with the offensive and defensive co-o's game style.

we had a short week without all hands on deck. this should be our biggest jump in what we see on the field. this is really our first coaching/player time so far. you need time to put in a gameplan so that ate up most of the short week we did have. now we can work on players. then we will have a better grasp of what we really have as a team.

I put in one of the threads that I thought the short week was gonna be a detriment. One thing worth noting though is that they should already know how to tackle even if they are playing on a short week.

Completely agree on the tackling issue. I absolutely hate when any professional football player tries to tackle just by throwing a shoulder into the player with the ball. The tackling technique in todays football is so much different than in years past. More and more often the players today do not wrap up an opponent with both arms. Must be a fear of injury in the back or their minds. HS football coaches have to be teaching them this to see it play out through college and into the pros.

    Agree, back to basics now!

We're not as bad as Thursday night but we put that stinker out there.
Like Mac stated, we're young now and I would add the rules have changed too.

    GO STEELERS!

If i recall the rats had a short week too. I posted prior to the game, with the Rats week 1 loss, firing of Ray plus playing in their stadium they would play way over their heads with much determination and they did just that. I agree the short week affected the Steelers more so than the Ravens, with that being said you still have to man up and play as professionals.

Yeah they were on a short week also because they played the bungles week one and lost. I can see why players would be saying they are sore but the rats were probably sore as well.

I bet you if there were a stat for missed tackles we would probably lead the league at this point. Does anyone know our defensive rank through week 2? I will say though that I have consistently considered defensive rankings as bologna even when we were number one a few years ago. They just seem to have weird criteria. I'm just curious where we stand now?

I here ya, I have seen so many missed tackles
and just poor play that it is sickening. Most of these players have been playing since midget football, you would think that they would have a grasp of what needs to be done? When you have a young team you need to be riding/coaching
these guys up, I guess even in fundamentals.

At this point of their careers football players don't need to be taught fundamentals, they were taught fundamentals back in peewee football in high school.

They do need to start executing the basic fundamentals of football though.

I hear these excuses about having to play on a short week. Ravens played on a short week and had no problems with it.

Last night during the Bears/9ers game Kyle Fuller blew an assignment and it showed him on the sidelines getting CHEWED by a coach. It wasn't too long after that that he was out there cutting off routes and picking off passes. Apparently that coach must have gotten through to him about what he expected. He then went on the field and produced. I wish our guys would do that. Also, just out of curiosity, wasn't Kyle Fuller a guy that was on our radar? I was thinking last night that it seemed like he was.

He was taken the pick before SHazier, and that Steelers.com documentary kind of half-suggested that made our pick for us.

I think there's a difference between shouting at a rookie, and shouting at a player like Timmons. He just flat out shouldn't be missing.

Yeah but you KNOW the standard is the standard! LOL! Maybe it would be better if they DID shout at Timmons to get the rookies to see they are expected to bring it? Orson Wells used to basically have an actor come in and be a "crew member" on the set of his movies and on day one he would "fire" the guy and make everyone think that they had better walk the line or they would suffer the same fate. Although personally I would rather Ike get yelled at than Timmons. LOL.

Think it's possible that our personnel is only able to comprehend the basics, hence the predictability of our defense? LeBeau can only work with the personnel that he has, and if they aren't able to understand his complex schemes, then we'll be limited to the strengths and weaknesses of our athletes. Just a thought, I could be completely off base as I am not an expert.

Don't worry 58. Most of our players don't seem to be experts either. LOL. It probably is true that we have to use some more vanilla looks and packages and what not. But that doesn't excuse the poor tackling that leads to much more yards than should be given up.

There used to be a Law lecturer where I worked who did a similar thing, where halfway through his lecture a security guard would come in and try to escort him off the premises. Then they would have an argument about the law, and the security guard would be put in his place and he would leave. It was, apparently, eductional.

I can only hope that Tomlin is paying actors to come in and pretend to be the Pittsburgh Steelers, to lure the rest of the league into a false sense of security.

Steelers currently are ranked the #20 defense in terms of yards allowed per game. They are 29th against the run...Oakland is the worst right now at 200 ypg the Steelers are at 170 ypg. They are 7th against the pass - off course teams usually porous against the run are better against the pass because teams are running on them, not because of a stellar secondary.

Also of interest through 2 games the Steelers join only the Giants, Chiefs, and Colts as being the only teams to not create a turnover (Colts have only played one game, they play against the Eagles tonight). And only the Giants have a worse turnover differential with the Steelers giving it away 4 times and the Giants 6.

Explain please. How exactly has the CBA hurt the Steelers more than other teams? They're all playing by the same practice rules. Maybe the new rules are not good for the game ( though I'm not sure I believe that's true), but I don't see how they preferentially hurt PGH more than anyone else.

Not sure where they were going with the CBA, but having so many Defensive Players of the Year on our roster and high salary guys has surely hurt our roster in my opinion. Not saying it all happened at once, but Harrison & Polamalu, Timmons and Woodley combined with our franchise QB, has to be a nightmare to have all that money tied up in a handful of guys is risky business. Great when it works, not so great when it doesn't.

Basically, this year and last year's salary cap was consisted of approximately 50% of the cap in the hands of 7 players (varied each year). Yes, 50% of the salary cap in a total of 7 starters (injured or not). So you've got the remaining 38 players, splitting the rest of the pie. Not every team in the NFL can say that 7 players or less hold 50% of their cap. Just a thought.

I thought either Fuller or CJ Mosely was gonna be the Steelers pick at 15 for sure.
