If you play every snap on defense all year, you'll play about 1,000 snaps. In an ideal (but realistic) world, how many snaps do you want Brett Keisel to get this season?

He's going to be in a rotation with Thomas and Tuitt, which would put him in the 201-400 range. However, I think Thomas is going to wash out and the Beard and Tuitt will get the bulk of the work. So I'm going with 401-600.

I see him playing more of an al woods role.... he's definitely not a full time player anymore, but in spot duty, he'll be deadly

Only a few players on D last year saw 1000+ snaps. As you might expect, Timmons and a few DB's saw the most snaps coming in just shy of 1100. Here's the snap counts for the defensive linemen:

    Cam Heyward 845
    Ziggy Hood 646
    Brett Keisel 575
    McLendon 355
    Al Woods 223
    Loni Fangupo 13
    Brian Arnfelt 2

I think I'm comfortable with any amount of participation from Keisel if he's playing at a high level. I don't expect him to get significant playing time, though.

Edit- I forgot this was a poll. I vote 201-400.

I was right on the edge of 0-200 and 201-400, but went with the lower one. Frankly I'm just hoping our young guys step up enough that we don't need Keisel for anything other than the occasional rotation, and I'm hoping the coaches will let that happen if it's the right thing to do. I hope that by a few weeks in Tuitt is the #1 guy in nickel.

I think 100-160 snaps (10-16 per game) is perfect for Brett. Enough to make an impact and not just be strictly a mentor/emotional leader, enough to keep him fresh, but enough to let the other guys do most of the work.

I'd expect Cam Heyward to get close to 1,000 this year. He got 845 and he didn't start the first few games.

I'm estimating about 20 snaps a game, which would put him at 320 for the year.

I voted 401-600, but I think he's just barely in this category. I don't think he starts, but will be good to spell the younger guys as needed. I see him getting more snaps later in the season, as the weather might force teams to run the ball more.

I'd probably adjust my vote to the 200 range given TTF's additional info on snap counts.

I'd bet he'll be a situational player: he'll play only in 3-4 or nickel / dime, but not on both of them.
Our 3-4 scheme isn't our base defense anymore, since we (almost every team) play more nickel/dime packages. than 3-4.

My ideal? Play him as a DE on 3-4, and let the younger guys play on both Nickel & Dime.

That's basically how I feel, too. I hope he barely has to see the field, but I'm fine if he does assuming he's performing at a high level. The less growing pains with the youth on defense, the better.

I'm going to say around the 350-400 Range. Da Beard wasn't bad last season, when he was healthy and played. So, I'm hoping for more of the same.

I think he surprises a lot of people and plays 401-600
and is the defensive comeback player of the year
