Vulnerable to what? And who cares? There's no shortage of crappy unemployed QBs that are at least as good as Jones. Give it a couple of weeks and another wave of crappy QBs at least as good as Jones will be looking for a job.

jones has shown zip on the ball and if that pick was two feet to the left, that's a reception. he also doesn't play with these receivers that much, so getting to know their speed is a work in progress. heck even ben needs a lot of reps with the newer receivers to get the timing down.

I liken him to mallet of the patriots. this is mallets 4th year and he is just starting to show something. way to early to make a decision one way or another on a 3rd string qb. we expect him to be Charlie batch like when grad isn't even to that point yet.

sure we could just bring in another backup and he may look better at this point, but the longer jones is learning OUR system the better he will become. maybe he's getting the early play with the first team line, because we are not overly happy with gradkowski at this point in camp. grad did improve in my eye's from week one to week two, but not a quantum leap either.

If Landry makes the 53 it's a waste of a roster spot, some other player will get cut who can actually play and help the team. If he's on the PS and some other team claims him oh well they can have him, I don't see some other team claiming him and putting him on their active roster.

I wonder if they will give Kay some playing time in these preseason games? I'd like to see what he can do. I've seen enough of Jones. Spare us any more of that.

I have faith in our qb coach. remember he was a rookie last year which is hard enough on a qb, but we were also bringing gradkowski along as a #2, which kept the coaches quite busy. ben was also trying to get a better handle on some changes with the offense too. I'm not sure with all of this going on there was a lot of landry jones time. the same with this year. it's only been about 3 weeks this year up until the last game.

I disagree 110%. If Ben played with the second stringers, the second stringers would look much better. If you are a good player, you should be able to adapt and show your skills in any setting. Even if you are playing with 4th stringers, if you are a 1st string quality player, you should be lighting it up.

    Except Mallet is actually decent.

There is absolutely no guarantee that a player will continue to develop by staying in the same system. If that were the case, then Matt Leinart would be all-pro, Vince Young would still be in the league, Matt Schaub would still be one the Texans, etc...

ben would also look bad behind our backup O-line. maybe not as bad, but in his second camp he would have.

at this point I want to see gradkowski picking it up every week. if neither do, (grad or jones) I could see a change coming at some point. it just depends who's out there if it does happen. I don't think it will though.

The Jones pick reminds me a lot of the Tee Martin pick. I'm guessing that two years and a release will be the same this time.

The problem with Jones is he played in a offense in college that he lined up in the shotgun all the time, he's having trouble making the transition to a NFL offense.

Ben today or rookie Ben? Ben today is comparing apples to oranges but rookie ben, wouldn't look much better. How bad did Ben look the first 4 games last season? A QB has to have the pieces around him, don't care how good he is.

Agreed. I'm not sure what people are expecting out of Landry Jones at this point. He's a fourth round draft pick that has some potential for crying out loud. He may never develop into a starting caliber NFL quarterback but one thing's for certain, he's not going anywhere this year. End of story!

mallet is also in his 4th season. in year two he didn't. vince, matt and leinart were made starters. that's not why jones is here. big difference.

Good discussion everybody. Let me throw this out there because it has been mentioned the spending a majority of his college career from the shotgun and having to learn to take snaps under center. Is this something that is a legit problem that might be causing him problems? If he has spent so much time in the shotgun why aren't they tailoring plays to his strengths since that is one of Ben's favorites as well and they have a lot of plays from the shotgun formation? Wouldn't this help with a less than stellar oline in front or is the coaching staff trying to get him to acclimated to what a pro-style QB will have to face in the NFL?

Kyle Orton and Kevin Kolb are available IIRC, I think those guys are definitely a good #3 and could even compete for a #2 spot.

Those guys might even be on the street most of the year and could step right in, do we really need 3 qb's?

I liked Jerod Johnson better than Landry too.

I've said this from the beginning...with the OL not the greatest when he gets to play...he's not the same type of QB under pressure...if he could have a pocket and some time...who knows?!

    Yup!

    Exactly.

Blast makes a good point here countering what TTH said.

    Bingo!

    -----------------------------------------------------------

Anyways...a lot of the quotes some up what I have to say about him. People complaining since day 1 when they drafted him in the 4th last year (and no they didnt trade up for him, that was Shamarko). People wanted someone else? WHO? There were a couple guys drafted after him that people might recognize or whatever like....

    Johnathin Franklin (retired now)
Quinton Patton (has shown flashes in SF)
John Simon (not sure what hes been up to)
Stepfan Taylor (would be behind Bell...who they took 2 rounds earlier)
Kenny Stills (I liked this guy too...and has done well so far...but they took Wheaton in the round before so...?)

Thats up until the end of the 5th round....there were maybe a couple other players whos names got thrown around during draft time...but most of the ones i mentioned plus others havent done squat (Stills might be the only exception). Will they turn into more later? Maybe...who knows!

I think giving him some CONSISTENT time playing with the 1st teamers would help him (just the opposite of someone claiming if Ben worked with the 2nd/3rd/etc teams he would make them better...other 1st teamers would make Jones a 3rd teamer look better). Yes he got to play ONE series with the starters...WOW!!! He had a nice pass there (got to step up in the pocket instead of being mauled) though yes it was an INT. After that they never gave him time with the 1st team. He has shown potential here or there...but I don't think we'll see a lot of it with who he gets to play with.

I think people are too caught up in the whole "oh he was a 4th rounder thats a high pick he should be a star"/etc/etc. The draft is a crap shoot...PERIOD...1st rounders turn out to be flops and UDFAs turn out to be superstars and everything in between. If he doesnt turn into something they will just cut him and move on...no big deal. I do think though he has some tools...but they're just not being used right so to speak.

Kolb is no better he retired because of concussions, Orton walked away from a 3 million salary I don't think he wants to play anymore. And Orton wouldn't go to a team to be #3 QB, they aren't going to bring in a guy to be #2 when the season is almost here. Gradkowski is the backup we just have to hope Ben can play all 16 games like last season.

Our use of the shotgun is a strange one. At a time when our o-line was giving Ben 0 seconds to throw the ball, they didn't utilise the shotgun anywhere near as much as they should have. And if they felt that it took away the running threat, it doesn't explain why Haley runs a draw play 2 out of 3 times* we are in the shotgun.

So it goes back to my earlier point - gameplan for the kid. No point making him play the game as if he were Ben, because he isn't Ben.

I tried to defend Landry Jones last year. But, I have to say he looks more Lost than a missing kid on a milk carton. He better show something. I hope Brenden Kay, gets a chance against the Eagles, just to see what might be there.

I REALLY like Landry as a person. A devout Christian and family man. I was pulling for the guy big-time. He doesn't have the big NFL arm BUT neither did Montana. He himself said the Windows are surprisingly much smaller here in the NFL. Running with the ones showed he still panics in the pocket and loses focus. The shotgun in college covered his flaws but it won't help him here. The CB & S are too good and the pass rush is still coming. Even if the team wants to extend his development because they see something we don't there is no way he needs to take up a roster spot. Too many young talented players vying for a roster spot. LETS not forget WE will now be carrying 2 LS for probably the 1st 2 weeks for the season.

You can't always tell how good a player is while he is surrounded with subpar talent, but you can tell if he is minimally competent. Fans tend to rationalize as to why a player they like is failing to perform. "If Jones was playing behind a decent OL and with better WRs" ... but what Jones really needs is a pair. Getting hit and harassed is a part of the job. If you can't deal with that, you can't play QB on this level.
