Many reports I've read has this kids flying around, getting int and bringing the hammer from the safety position.

Does he have a chance to make the 53?, PS?

I was just about to post a similar thread. Haven't heard much talk around here about the kid, but he seems to be popping up on a lot of reports. What's his story?

From what I have read, he hits hard but the rest of his game is very underdeveloped. Potential is there though. I say PS is his destination.

I don't see him making the 53, they have 3 veteran safeties as backups ahead of him Allen, Shamarko, Golden. Dangerfield seems like he's headed for the PS.

I think he's getting respect. He's definitely making a case for himself, but I just can't see him making the 53. Very likely he gets signed to the practice squad though, IMO.

Allen and Golden are okay, but if Dangerfield keeps lighting people up and carries some of the splash plays over into the pre-season games, who knows what may happen. We need playmakers on defense and I don't think you can attach that moniker to either Allen or Golden.

I have to agree, but more specifically golden. we have not seen much from him as a position player but more as a ST'er.

if JD can play well as a position player and show pretty well as a ST'er, it may be enough. I doubt allen will go anywhere, but with two older guys back there and Mitchell yet to practice, it may be goldens saving grace. JD was here last preseason though so he should have a pretty good grasp of the defense too.

Problem is if he's splashing and they try to sneak him to PS, they may lose him. We all know that no one is going to go after Allen or Golden if they don't keep them.

The respect was a parody of Rodney Dangerfield's " I can't get any respect" bit but as thigpen says no one has mentioned this kid so far. It's easy to say now he'll not make the 53 but come preseason if he gets a few int's and lays the wood and even causes a fumble or two and plays well on ST Golden could be in trouble!

At Camp on Sunday Dangerfield took a bad angle on a running play and Dri, took it to the house about 65 yards. Carnell Lake had a cow, and Dangerfield sat for the rest of that series.

And thats precisely why he won't make the 53, the occasional big hit and splash play can't make up for being burned several times a game. He has a lot to learn.

I read a report that said Golden took a bad angle on Dri and Dri went for a huge gain. Not sure this was the same play. Dri has beaten Timmons several times with his speed also. JD surely has an uphill battle ahead of him. I've read Allen looks very slow but Tomlin ain't cutting Allen this year.

I think the play you are talking about, Golden was being blocked by Gilbert, and could not get off the block. That drew a lot of yells from the coaches, to "get off the block" but it was not because of taking a bad angle. Dri had a number of big runs, at least until the rain hit.

i re-read it. Draw to Archer to the right, he cut left and golden had the angle but Dri still blew by him for 35 yds....

I'm sure that Dri Archer has turned ALOT of good angles into bad angles. Conventional geography doesn't work on this guy!

Dare I say that Polamalu's rookie season could be described in similar terms?

Not that the two are even close to comparable, of course. However, I'm really looking forward to seeing guys like Dangerfield in Preseason.

On the PS issue: true, Dangerfield might get snapped up by another team, but there have been plenty of camp bodies who we've all been convinced would be starting on another roster, only to see them disappear without a trace...

True, but wouldn't you just like to see them try to keep one of these young guys on the active roster and see if it works, while cutting someone that was on the waiver wire in the middle of the season last year?

Oh, I want to see Dangerfield hanging around based on the camp reports, for sure. I suppose I meant more that he may well be able to stay on the PS as well.

Jumping ahead a bit, say Dangerfield shines in the preseason, it might be a case that he takes Golden's place rather than Allen. I was surprised by how positive Allen's impact was coming in to the team last season.

I sort of went through the CB and S positions yesterday over on SteelerDepot and I look at things like this:

    S: Mitchell, Troy, Thomas
CB: Ike, C. Allen, Gay, Blake

I think these 7 guys are givens to make the team. That leaves 3 spots open and some of those guys are pretty solidly set, but could "potentially" be outplayed for a spot.

    S: Golden, W. Allen, Dangerfield
    CB: Richardson, McCain

I honestly don't trust that Dangerfield is really in the running for a roster spot. He has to jump at least Golden or Allen and maybe both. IMO, he is fighting for a spot on the PS and that is it.

So that leaves 4 guys fighting for 3 spots. What we do there is ANYONE's guess. Do we want 6 CBs? Do we simply do 5 and 5 because we trust that our guys can cover from the safety position?

Or, conversely, they might trust Gay to be able to cover safety, given he's been doing some of that in camp.

The guy on the hot seat is Golden, for me.
