Well, what can I say. Former Steeler Full Back John Kuhn makes the Pro Bowl for the Packers. Another player forced out under Tomlin and BA. A guy who could have still been on the Steelers roster. When is the madness ever going to stop?

I still scratch my head every time I see John Kuhn play and wonder what they were thinking when they let him go.........To the Packers nonetheless..........but then it dawns on me. BA doesn't use a true fullback in his offenses. Instead they use a mediocre one dimensional fullback in Johnson and only about twice a game.

Kuhn runs like Fu did and yet the offensive guru BA said no thanks.

    Incredible.

I don't understand Arien's unwillingness to carry a fullback. Is it to open a roster spot for another tight end? If so, I think it's a mistake. I don't think our running game would sputter so much if we had a true fullback to lead the running back into the hole. Mendenhall has already expressed his preference for a fullback. I just don't get it.

This will inevitably be when you get nine to ten responses to the fact that true fullbacks are a dying breed, the modern offense has no need of a fullback, most teams are doing away with the fullback and blah blah blah yadaa yadaa yadaa yadaa. to which my only response is really? no fullbacks huh guess it sucks to John Kuhn then.

Seems like BA would utilize his backs out of the backfield seeing how he doesn't use full backs. How about throwing the ball to the backs out of the backfield like NO and Brees does to Sproles. Mendenhall could do wonders if he would get 5 or 6 passes out of the backfield every game.

See, BA's whole gameplans are flawed. He doesn't do anything normal or that makes any sense.

LOL what is to get. Here is Big Ben's take on the matter(completely made up but I can see it) Ben screaming we are not running the football to the assembled press conference reporters. we are a passing team, we don't need a stinking fullback we aren't running the ball!

"Uh Ben you can throw to a fullback?"

Oh ok then but we aren't running the football!"

    "WE know Ben."

This really drives me wild. Mendenhall's such a good open field runner, but Ben seems to ignore him in the passing game. I don't know how many times I've seen him look to a seemingly wide-open Mendenhall, then divert his attention down field again right away. I think it might be part of the reason the offense is so inconsistent. It needs to sustain drives and stay on the field to develop a rhythm. That, I think, is the difference between teams like the Saints and new England and the Pittsburgh Steelers. They have rhythm. For the most part, the Steelers offense doesn't. I think more timing plays and check downs to the backs would definitely help it to develop.

I'm with all y'all on the subject of FBs (or the lack of) but, if what you can't believe is that a player the Steelers let go is doing well on a different team, check out the pro bowl rosters over the years that are filled with ex-Chargers and you should feel a little better.

He still would be against it because he can't throw 20+ yard completions to a fullback.

I thought Cowher let him go as well.

I liked Kuhn from what I saw in the pre-seasons, but at the time we already had several FB-type players in front of him. Still not sure how Carey Davies edged him out, but still - the point is, to say he was dropped simply because of offensive philosophy is just wrong.

That said, the success of Kuhn is why I'm hoping we keep hold of John Clay rather than see him go somewhere else and blossom.

Kuhn made the pro bowl as a TD vulture, not as a Blocker. Reminding you that the packers' running game was nonexistent this year (27th in the league)? Redman is the ideal short yardage back, I don't think anyone in the league does it better than him.

And we let him go in 2006! he has 10 Tds in 5 years in Green Bay. what is everyone whining about?

2006 was Cowher's last season as coach. This is just another reason to bash the Steelers current coaching staff.

As if a FB makes or breaks the Steelers offense LOL. Yeah, a FB is all that is needed to make the Steelers offense a top 5 juggernaut. The Steelers offense doesn't have problems moving the ball into the red zone. They get bogged down usually because 1) the QB struggles in that situation and 2) the offensive line has a difficult time opening holes for the RB's. A FB is not going to solve either of those issues.

In any event, whoever takes probowl voting seriously needs to rethink that stance.

Could care less about the probowl..
Glad to see Kuhn do well...
Dan Krieder, sure did help a running back get through an offensive line!!!
    D. Johnston, has the same ability, when we use him to do that!

Cheers for the info, I couldn't remember - just that he was around in that transitional time.

Still, my point was that I don't think Kuhn was let go because Tomlin was intent on shooting every FB he caught sight of.

But props to the guy. From PS to pro bowl is something to be proud of.

I'm a Clarion and IUP grad, so I tend to cheer for guys like Kuhn, Reggie Wells, and Jason Capizzi - guys from the PSSHE. Anyone know what's up with Capizzi? Is he out of the NFL now?

Kuhn isn't even a true fullback....I'm pretty sure he was a RB in college.

On the Packers he is more of a utility back. He runs and catches just as much, if not more, than he blocks.

I wouldn't put Kuhn up there as best blocking backs in the NFL.
