Shazier is already turning heads. Provided he stays healthy this D, up front will be better than average. Pressure = turnovers!

    :this!:COMPLETELY!:applaud:
For as much as they have been saying the last couple of seasons, about using two backs in the backfield, I have yet to see it.
Hopefully, they actually break it out this year.
I have a feeling, it would be a productive formation.
Maybe even moreso, if they had Archer as the compliment to Bell...
I`d love to see the defense key on Bell on a fake to one side, then throw to Archer outta the backfield, on the other...
After a couple of those, when the D is worried about Archer, hammer `em with Bell!
Tons of possibilities, when the D doesn`t know which one`s gonna get the ball, or if EITHER of them is...
Good time for play-action deep ball... The D`s GOTTA be thinking one or the other back is likely to get the ball...
    GO STEELERS!!!

    Just sayin` Crav....
I`ve been an advocate of using both backs in the backfield, since we had Bus and Parker...
    Worked with Franco, and Blier..
    why not since then?
They`ve teased us enough the last few off-seasons, with talk...
No follow up when the season starts...
Other than that, I agree, good tidbits from OTA`s...
And I like the Door`s sig line...
    Keep mixin `em up!
    GO STEELERS!
Edit... At the risk of being labeled a "kiss-ass"... I think I like JackAttack`s new avatar, even better than TTF`s!;)(Somethin` to be said for the players carrying him on their shoulders, and the trophies in the corner!)

The reason they didn't use a dual backfield with Bettis and Parker was because they were two different styles of runner. Parker as evidenced by the Superbowl 40 run could take it to the house on a seemingly random play. Bettis needed numerous carries and to wear the defense down so he could be effective. That is why when they tried to go to an air assault under Maddox the Bus was a less effective runner. You couldn't simply turn him on in the fourth and expect him to barrel through a defense. I think to a certain extent it is the same way with Bell and Blount. Blount is a sledgehammer just looking for a hole and contact after, Bell is multifaceted and can do a lot be it in teh passing game or the running. I like the idea of having them both in there but Blount is less of a threat early on he needs to wear the defense down as well.

I hear ya, Thorn, and I don`t disagree...
I`m not saying they should ALWAYS use 2 backs.
Use your bruiser, to wear the D down, but you can still put a "speed" back in there with him, every so often.
Sometimes he`s a decoy...Sometimes, your "bruiser" could "lead-block", and your speedy guy could either follow him, or cut off him, or swing wide for a pass...
Sometimes, NEITHER of them get the ball...
Just something to keep the D guessing...
Say you line up that way on roughly a 10th of your snaps during the game...
Same formation, different plays from it...
Maybe you throw a direct screen to the speedy guy, once or twice a game...
Hand the ball off to the big guy straight thru the line once or twice a game...
run misdirection plays off it once or twice a game...
run play-action off it, once or twice a game...
well... we`ve already used more plays than u would have them in the backfield together for, during one game, but, over the course of a season, you give the D a lot of things to prepare for...
Let them watch all the tape they want...
They can never be sure who to key on, or where the ball is gonna go in those situations...
Esp., cuz you only line up in that formation MAYBE 1/8 of your snaps...
Ideally even less... cuz we have PLENTY of other formations to work with...
Say we go 2 backs 5 times outta 60 snaps per game...
I`m just plucking numbers outta the air, now, because I don`t even know what an average number of snaps per game is...
I`m a casual fan... But you get my point...
It`s all about showing one formation, and doing multiple things out of it...
Actually, it doesn`t even have to be one formation... you could line them both up, in an "I" formation, or a traditional "2 back set"(wing/pistol), or split the quick one out towards the "Tight end" position...Leave the "bruiser" in to block, or run up the gut, the possibilities are pretty much as endless as Todd Haley wants them to be, but the overall effect, should be, that the defense can`t key on our "tendencies", or have a clue, what we are about to do!
Obviously,(Dammit, Tomlin, get outta my head!), down and distance will play a part, as will other formations we use.. without the 2 back set, I just think it should be PART of our gameplan, and they keep SAYING it will...
    DO IT!!!
Set the D up, with your previous playcalls.... Can PWP, back me up here?!?! Ya know what I`m sayin!!!
    GO STEELERS!!!

I kind of like the two back system - Quarterback and Running Back. It is when we don't have any backs that I start to worry!
