With all the positive news from the draft and media reports about the upcoming season, the Steeler's new look, added youth and speed what will you reaction be if the Steelers under Tomlin have another ho hum lackluster season?

Will his time as head coach be limited or should be limited without regards to the Steeler way of retaining head coaches as done in the past?

I think this is a VERY IMPORTANT year for Tomlin. I'm not on the FMTI bandwagon but I don't think he can afford another year of mediocrity, especially if it wastes another prime year of a franchise quarterback's career. I hope Tomlin can right the ship in Pittsburgh, even though I've expressed concerns over his coaching style in the past. There's a lot to like about Tomlin and he has led the Steelers to a couple of Super Bowls. Let's see now if he can get this team back on track. 2014 should be an interesting season.

One reason to be confident this year is that the coaching pieces are moving into place. The coaches are all set in position, shaping the way they want the ship to run, and are getting the pieces to make it work. While I'm still not completely sold on Haley, I'm hard pressed to think of better coaches we could feasibly have at most positions. And that's very different from Tomlin's early start.

Anything short of winning the superbowl 73-0.

No. But I definitely believe that another 8-8 (or thereabouts) season would fit the description, don't you? I think anything less that 10 wins would be a disappointment.

I'd agree, with a caveat - given a reasonably healthy squad, I'd expect 10. There's always more to the numbers than just numbers, if you see what I mean. Likewise, if we did incredibly well, but lost in the play offs through some boneheaded decisions, I'd be putting MT under the microscope.

To me, record isn't the sole measure. Are they improving or regressing?

I hated last season. Truly hated it and was pretty ticked off by the abysmal first half of it. But they showed a great deal of improvement over the latter half. If that continues, MT is off the hot seat.

But if they come out flat, disorganized, lackluster play, lack of effort, and generally appearing like an amateur team, then I don't care if they start 6-2. I'll still be hopping mad.

I don't expect that to happen.

I think Tomlin is in control of his own career here. He HAS shown the willingness and effort to get us back on track. Regardless of records, I think he's safe a few more years. If he gets us deep into the playoffs in the next 2 seasons, he'll have carte blanche for a long time to come.

But if he fails to improve the team, and we hover around 8-8 (or worse) for another 2 years, he may want to start updating that resume.

    I'm betting he's here to stay. :)

ya know.. i just dont know on MT... after 4 games last season we were 0-4 and looking terrible.. then we finish 8-4... to keep a team that starts 0-4 and has playoff and SB hopes every season to start 0-4 is devastating... and for him to right the ship and keep 53 guys from not giving it up.. i was impressed.. was it his best coaching season .. certainly not .. but i dont know a lot of coaches that can turn an 0-4 dismal start with a trip to london thrown in and finish 8-4... both he and the teams showed me a lot of heart.. will we improve and win 9 or 10 games this year.. maybe.. maybe lose 9 or 10 just as easily .. but at least i dont think this team will ever just give up and that says a lot for this group of men !! i still think our best off season addition was picking up munch as the OL coach...that was huge

If the Steelers don't sniff the playoffs again this year, I think a head or two will roll, and Tomlin officially moves to the hotseat.

The problem is, you could easily argue that even at 8-8 last year, we still sniffed the play-offs. It wasn't as pungent a sniff as we would be used to, but the nostrils were certainly flared there towards the end.

We were Antonio Brown's little toe away from going through. We were a shanked field goal away. Ok, we should never be in the situation where those kind of things are the difference-makers... but context is everything when you start looking at possibly changing a HC.

If the Steelers would start the season disorganized and flat, yet be 6-2 halfway, that would actually be impressive.

I think you mean that even if they go 6-2 in the second half, it wouldn't make up for not being prepared at the start.

What if they went 9-7, got in as a wild card and advanced to the second round of the playoffs?

I think any kind of improvement and MT will be fine. The only way his seat gets warm is if the team finishes .500 or worse, IMO.

If Tomlin starts the season at 0-4 again I'll pay for his one way ticket out of Pittsburgh to anywhere in the Universe myself. I wouldn't even want to see him on the sideline for game 5.
I'd hate to believe that it would ever happen though.
Anything less than a 10 win season and a least one post season victory will be a disappointment IMO and will probably put him on the hot seat.

Up until Tomlin there's been 2 Steelers' HCs in my lifetime on this planet, and they left on their own accord when They Said Enough.
There's been one name in ownership my entire existence and I have yet to see them fire a HC.
Good, bad, indifferent, Tomlin is here to stay.

A white haired Tomlin walking the sideline is a real possibility IMO.

Somebody's on my hot seat. Just not sure who. Tomlin, Colbert, Art, Bad Word LeBeau, conditioning coaches, GOD, position coaches, players, Miley Cyrus-but somebody's definitely upon my hot seat for the last two seasons.

Not if we go 8-8, or worse again, especially sinnce there are now 3 ex-head coaches now on the current staff. IMO, if we go 8-8 or worse, Tomlin's head will be on the chopping block, as well as it should be.

If we miss the playoffs this year with 4 head coaches on our staff, I think Tomlin is gone. The only way he stays is if Ben gets hurt which is why we miss the playoffs. There's simply no excuses this year, none. There's too much experience on the coaching staff and too much talent for this team to miss the playoffs. I think Tomlin and Haley would be gone, and if the defence didn't perform well, it wouldn't shock me if Dick Lebeau was also shown the door. Missing the playoffs this year would result in a big shakeup I think.

A whole lot of variables would be at play I think. I guess it would depend on how the team performed in going 9-7. If we come out flat and uninspired in several games as we've had the tendency to do the last couple of seasons then I think Tomlin's seat will warm up a bit. I think Chef Tomlin has the ingredients to cook a great meal, now we'll see if he can deliver a gourmet masterpiece.

Absolutely no chance the Steelers would react that way, firing the whole coaching staff. They aren't the Browns, thats something they would do.

I agree with just about everything here. We went from planning on drafting first overall to challenging for a playoff spot. It was damn impressive. Now, I could live without the 0-4 start... While many people freak out at consecutive 8-8 seasons, I don't really. There was a lot of roster turnover, and we lost a lot of incredible football players to Father Time. I'll start worrying when we draft top ten. Until then we will see what Tomlin has got.

We have a young team of guys he drafted. It looks like a pretty talented team, but only time will tell. In my mind MT shouldn't be on the hot seat just yet, because he hasn't earned it. A 4-12 season could quickly change my tune tho. I'll be hoping for a playoff run (maybe even SB bound)! Then we won't have to worry about hot seats lol

4-12 and he gone... but that wont happen.... no way we go 4-12... i think 5-12 or 12-5 is possible.. unlikely but possible... i think best and worst case is 11-5 or 5-11 at the most extreme .. id bet we are between 10-6 and 6-10 but then so would almost everyone except the traditional ra ra guys that predict 12-4 and 13-3 every season... i think the line is 8 1/2 wins for the steelers this season... and i think thats dead on .. probably a tad better then the last 2 seasons.. probably a little better then an average team... but with a few breaks we can win 10 and i wouldnt be shocked (or lose 10 with a little bad luck and still not be shocked)
