two guys that don't get a lot of love this year are morgan breslin and shaquill barrett.

breslin is a possible UDFA even and SB a 6th or 7th. I think these two if used properly could be absolute steals at that range.

when healthy and I know that's the rap on breslin, he is a very high motor guy that is very good against the run and as a pass rusher.

barrett can rush the pass but he's tough against the run and has some athleticism. he just has the LB look to him that can be worked with. we wouldn't need early picks if we could snag these two up in the 6th and 7th. they would play far above that level as backups and maybe more in our system eventually.

they are worth watching some film on if you get the chance and think of them in our system as backups. go back and watch if you have glossed across them in the past. I'd be thrilled to come away with these two in the pipeline as late rounders. thoughts?

    Mac,
I also like both guys as late round targets. Breslin's 2012 tape is pretty good - certainly draft worthy. To be honest, I haven't even watched any of his limited 2013 tape. To me it's all about the medical evals for him. Barrett certainly gives it his all on every down, and is capable both rushing and against the run. My preference would be to get a guy earlier who has more upside and potential to start in 2015, and then grab either one of these guys later in the draft and send him to the practice squad for 2014 if he doesn't earn a spot on the final 53. I think we have far more question marks at the OLB spot that you seem to, and I want to address it early.

I don't know. One, both or neither may be starters at OLB for us in 2015 depending on how things go this year. I won't repeat the uncertainties that I see with each player because I've discussed it in detail a few weeks back. However, I am even more uncertain about Worilds now that we are in the week of the draft and he is still under a 1 year contract for 2014. Wouldn't it make sense that we would want to have that uncertainty nailed down heading into this week - if there's a reasonable deal to be had? The fact that there isn't a deal leads me to be concerned that we are too far apart for anything to get done this offseason. In my view we need to take a quality OLB early because we simply can't afford to let the cupboard go bare at that position. It's too critical to our success. I'd rather have 3 solid OLBs than 1. LeBeau would find a way to use them.

My gut tells me that there's a 75% chance that Jason Worilds will not be a Steeler in 2015. The 25% he stays would be based on the fact that he has a terrible year and we would be able to sign him back on a bargain contract.

My guy: Howard Jones, OLB, Sheperd

Small school I know, but he had 35 sacks and 70 TFL in 47 games. 6'2 235 with 34"+ arms. He blew up the combine. He will probably go in the 4th or 5th. Definitely a project but worth it.

Wow! 6'2" and 34" arms, that's something you don't see every day. Sounds like someone worth a pick; sure beats the "solid collegiate starter but probably nothing much in NFL" guys that get drafted from the major programs in the second half of the draft. Even though HoJo is a small-school guy, it appears that he already possesses one critical aspect of a quality defender: the mentality. His production at any level signifies the importance of the game to him.

Just draft Attaochu in the 1st. He's the career leader in sacks at GA Tech, and he just turned 21 in January. His film is excellent, and he shows relentless drive on every play. When you watch his tape, and realize that he did it all before his 21st birthday, it's hard not to see the upside. To me he looks like he will be very similar to Suggs in both ability and playing style, and that's a guy I want on the edge of our defense. I know we won't take him at 15, and there are other guys I would be happy with. However, if the front office truly thinks that Worilds is gone next year, then IMO OLB should become priority 1, and this kid has future pro bowler written all over him.

i'll stick by van noy if we go early, but to get breslin and or barrett would certainly give us some depth if worilds stays or goes. I'm still holding out hopes of moats doing some damage in our system. he and worilds were the suprises at the combine in their rookie years. now we have them both. his trouble was being bounced back and forth in a 3-4 to a 4-3 and from OLB to ILB and back. if we can set him into a spot to learn one system it may help him. a little knowledge of the system though has to help.

barrett was joey porters player at col.st. so he's got some familiarity. breslin is just non stop until he has the tackle whether he's got the defender hanging off of him at that time or not. he just tackles them both. his injury is his biggest downfall this year or he would be much higher.

Breslin was injured all of 2013 he had a solid 2012, he's worth a look in the 7th or as a UDFA.

I've liked Breslin for a while. I think I even mocked him to us once in the 6th or something like that... He is an excellent pass rusher, but isn't real strong against the run. Is a very good ST'er too, so he could contribute in a number of ways. I'd love to have him late and try to develop him in the run game. At worst he will be a good ST guy and a situational pass rusher.

now I thought he played the run pretty well. he gets off blocks or at least gets a hand on a leg or something while he's still blocked. like old aaron smith. the LB'ers used to take the guy to the ground, but the last guy getting up from under the pile was smith and he was the cause of the tackle usually. I think he'd be a great value late. he's even slotted by some to not get drafted. heck he was near the top at one point. there are a few of these injured guys that are now healed that are going low. several out of sight out of mind studs. I'd love to find them in our camp.
