Interesting. If the Steelers still feel a free safety is in play in the first, it definately broadens our ability to draft BPA.

I doubt they brought him in thinking first round, I think they are hoping him or the FSU guy slips until the 2nd round.

Interesting indeed. I mocked mocks that had us taking a safety in the first three rounds after we signed Mike Mitchell. With him, Troy, Shamarko, Will Allen, and Robert Golden, our starters and backups seem pretty set. Our starters seem set for the foreseeable future. The 1st and 2nd round seem very high to be taking a depth player at a position with young, promising starters in line. And if Mitchell or Thomas aren't the plan, then what the hell?

I like that they always do their homework, but I just can't see how getting a safety in the first half of this draft helps the team. Not with good players at CB, WR, DL, LB, TE, OL, and RB out there.

people have talked about on here in the past about Thomas having good cover skills. I wonder if he can move to corner? I don't think so but imo you can never have enough good dbs in the league now. especially with the injury history and luck we have

Could be a ploy to try and draw more interest earlier for the safeties . It's not out of the realm of possibility.. More than likely they are just doing their home work on a player that may slip a bit, IMO.

I don't consider him at #15 but I could be missing on him.

Seems like a waste of time they have bigger needs to fill in the early rounds.

The more likely pick for them is the FSU safety in the 3rd round if he last that far...

Would love Terrence Brooks but he is probably going somewhere in late round 2 to early 3rd round. I doubt he hangs around until our comp pick in the 3rd. Plus, I think the signing of Mitchell kind of guarantees that we won't be taking a Safety until later on, if at all.

I think they are indeed looking at him in the 1st. round...Pryor is a lot better fit for our scheme than Dennard....Dennard has never played a lot of Zone and he was also used as a boundary CB a lot in College,,,,I can't believe no one has raised this flag....Well I will ,beware of the Boundary CB....

Pryor is a Troy like type player he has good pre snap instincts he also loves to support in the running game...No way does he make it past pick #20 ...The Steelers know this guy will not be there in the 2nd round....

Pryor is a S though. Where's he fit on the depth chart? I just don't see the Steelers taking him.

I think Pryor could cover the TE or a RB in man to man coverage. I also think he would be a great nickel and dime Zone defender..Plus he is a true run stopper which could lead to some creative packages by DL.. I Like the ideal of having Troy's replacement out there playing with him..

Now if we took him in the 1st. and a great zone CB in the 2nd. we would look pretty good on D IMO...

Lots of 3 Safety looks could be in the future with Troy up at the LOS , the only pressing need I see is at CB or OT ....I don't think we can get a stud at either position at pick #15.....However, I do believe we would have a stud in Pryor....

I doubt we get Pryor ,but if him an Dennard are both there I would much rather have Pryor even though we have more depth at that spot... We could always use that depth to help trade back up and get a true zone CB... Cough, Cough,,,,Fuller.....lol

You just described Shamarko Thomas

Well, except he may struggle with huge TEs, but we can't be spending a 1st round pick on something that specific. We have other guys that can do that in the meantime.

this. with troys age and will allens age, I think they do like Thomas as a run supporting, good coverage nickel safety/corner and will use him as such. pryor and Mitchell as the long term answer at safety and an upgrade to gays spot with Thomas. a draft pick like fuller, roby, gilbert to team with allen could be quite a defensive backfield in another year or two. thus phasing out troy and w.allen down the road. makes sense to me.

I see you guys point and it does make sense...I am just thinking outside the box if you will .....Basically a Team that could stay in the Nickle and Dime and still stop the run out of it....Plus the more pre snap read guys you can put on the field the better your Team is going to be...

You guys might not like the pick if we took him ,but if we did and could get a good CB in the 2nd. you would Love the pick as soon as you saw the DL product on the field...I don't think our SS/FS is as deep as most think....Looking at how they used Troy last year he is basically a LB IMO and is a lot more effective at the LOS....

With Pryor ,Mitchell and Thomas we could let Troy stay at the LOS or in the box if you will and disrupt every play in some way or another....I am sure there are some Coaches on the Steelers staff who might be thinking that way as well.....

Heck who knows with that much help on the backend maybe our CB'S could stop playing 15 yards off the ball and actually cover a WR in the same time zone...

I think there could be a number of combo's that could work well for us. jaylon Watkins, buccannon, and gaines is shooting up the boards too. Watkins is another guy that's very capable of playing corner/safety equally well. pryor and bucannon are safeties but good ones and gaines is a fine corner that's been glossed over by the draftnicks until lately. fuller and roby both are good corners and run supporters. varrett has to be in that mix too, but with Thomas that leaves us pretty short in stature back there. still they both can cover well and hit people, not to mention all these guys bring added speed to the secondary. we need it too.

Since many fans think they are going to draft CB/WR or WR/CB in the early couple rds I have been focusing on those positions.

But this thread made me take a look at the Safety spot.

I have been using videos from YouTube made by True to Football. They are very good quick composites of just about every draft position. The WR vid has 18 guys and the CB has 15. Too bad the CB one does not have the several late rounders some fans are mentioning like Phillip Gaines, Russ Cockrell, Aaron Colvin, Walt Aikens and a couple others.

Anyway the FS one only had 5 players. Calvin Pryor, Ha-Ha Clinton Dix, Ed Reynolds, Jemea Thomas and Terrence Brooks. These players are all hard hitters. But oddly enough the one that caught my eye was Jemea Thomas. Unfortunately, he is on the small side. But since he is projected as a rd 7 pick he seems worth a shot. Hmm! Two not very big Safeties both named Thomas. A coincidence. The Mightey Mites.:smiley1:
Those vids by True to Football are pretty well made and worth taking a look at. A real good starting point to get a look a some of these prospects.
