I was just going to post that it was the "joint" practices that swayed him, but you ruined it for me.

    Thanks a lot.

I clicked on the thread thinking "heh, I wonder if this is Jack just posting a picture of Mel Blount."

    True story.

Somehow I don't think this Blount,
will be a 1/10 as good as the one you posted on.:smiley1:

Certainly not as a CB. I can pretty much guarantee that.

Actually Mel Blount probably couldn't be 1/2 as great as he was with the new rules set up. He'd spend to much time being suspended and fined which would have completely watered down his intensity.

I dunno... half of those rules are based on the original "Blount rule"... and after that came in, he showed himself to be a quality coverage player as well, not just a mean hitter.

I do sometimes wonder whether, if the current rules were used back then, the AFC would still be dominated by the Raiders and Steelers, or if the more 'finesse' teams would have won more. To me, the brilliance of the '70s Steelers was that they managed to do both (tough defense, finesse offense), over the decade.

so? he played within the rules at the time. don't you think he would have had to adjust like the rest of them? Richard Sherman looks pretty good with the new rules. don't you think mel would still look good running down the field banging on gronkowski?:lolol: hey don't they wear the same number?:hmmm::cool:

Or... Maybe he'd have adjusted. You know, because he was a dominant CB before the Mel Blount rule, and then came the Mel Blount rule, and he adjusted and continued to dominate.

It's not often we have specific proof to definitively prove someone wrong in a hypothetical situation, but here it is. Mel Blount already went through this exact change you're talking about. He kicked the game's ass until they changed the rules specifically to neutralize him, and then he kicked its ass some more, in the new rule set. He adjusted and continued to dominate. What does he have to do to prove you wrong, besides doing exactly what you just said he can't do? Play until he's 100 and the rules have changed 50 more times?

Can't believe it, quite possibly the 2nd greatest Steeler of all time and you get some of these responses.

It's really impossible to predict how Mel Blount would have adjusted his game if he was continually fined and/or suspended. As far as I know he was never subjected to either. I'm sure he would have adjusted the same way that he already had to but when the Commissioner hits them in the pocket and takes games away then the player naturally second guesses and plays more hesistantly. JMHO.
