I think this is the year we should load up on D, so here it goes...

    1. Darqueze Dennard (CB Michigan State): Although I'm on the Mike Evans bandwagon, I believe he will be long gone before we pick. Dennard is arguably the best cover corner in the draft, so he's my guy at 15. He may not be well-suited for our current zone scheme, but I think DL would make adjustments to utilize his strengths in man coverage.

    2. Jason Verrett (CB TCU): There's a good chance he won't be there by time we pick in the 2nd round. However, the flavor of the month seems to be cornerbacks over 6 feet tall so this may drop his draft stock enough for us to snatch him up. I could see us using him to cover the smaller quick recievers such as the wes welker types.

    3. Shayne Skov (ILB Stanford): This is one of my favorite guys in this draft class. Skov isn't the biggest, strongest, or fastest guy, but what he lacks in athleticism, he makes up for in instincts and football smarts. He's also a natural leader, as well as someone I could see calling the plays for our defense in a few years. Our 3rd pick is a comp. pick so it's practically a 4th. I'm not sure he will last that long, but I would be thrilled if we got him at this spot.

    4. Brent Urban (DT/DE Virginia): At 6'7" 295lbs this guy would make a great 3-4 DE. Kinda fits the mold of an Aaron Smith and Brett Kiesel; maybe lightning will strike a third time with this guy.

5a. Ron Powell (OLB Florida): More or less an underacheiver at the University of Florida. I do believe he has some upside if put in the right system. We also could use the olb depth. I really couldn't resist making this pick due to his resemblance to Joey Porter and his jersey 2 sizes too small. Joey Porter 2.0? lol

5b. Devin Street (WR Pitt): With our second comp. pick the Steelers rush to the podium to select Devin Steet, the next Larry Fitzgerald. Ok, that may be a slight stretch in comparison but the guy does have some game in him. His biggest knock on him is his overall speed and seperation skills. He's a bigger target at 6'4" and has pretty good hands. Not a bad pick at this point.

6a. De'Anthony Thomas (RB Oregon): After a slower than expected 40 time at the combine, along with some injuries, Thomas falls all the way to us in the 6th round. I see him more as a return specialist than a natural running back. May be useful as a 3rd down back in certain situations. This pick will hopefully allow us to not have AB returning kicks anymore.

Sorry I got lazy on you guys, I didn't really do a lot of research on the lower round guys to make a selection with our last two picks. The overall theme of this mock is getting back to dominant steeler defense. I think these guys would help us get back there. Let me know what you guys think. GO STEELERS!!!:yeehaw:

Nice job overall. I can't see us waiting until the 5th round to grab a WR though. I like Dennard a lot and at this point I want him, Gilbert or Evans in the first. I think we go WR, CB or CB, WR in the first two rounds.

Probably CB in the 1st, WR in the second, don't think Evans will still be there at 15 and Watkins surely wont be.

Dennard and then Matthews or Robinson in the second would make me happy.

Overall not terrible. I like some and don't like some. You picked all of the right positions though.

I got a lot going on so I'll make this short,

I absolutely agree on the 1st 2 rds and even had them posted exactly like this in my upcoming mock draft ( that could change ). I agree Jason Verrett could fall to us in the 2nd because of his height and the love of the "big" CB is in vogue and a couple of CB's I have rated below him could be drafted ahead of him. He's a great cover corner, perfect for the slot and would set our secondary for years. This would also allow Gay to move to safety and move Robert Golden out which is another upgrade.

I just don't like Thomas RB in the 6th. A guy that small and without a true position, is he a WR or RB, he better be a great athlete which he isn't. Dri Archer is a better athlete, faster and similar in position flexibility.

Just to throw this out there:

There is a perception that the Detroit Lions will take a CB and that it will be Justin Gilbert as he is perceived to be the best CB.

Now, even though Dennard isn't originally a Michigan native, he did play college there. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Detroit take Dennard, possibly leaving Gilbert for us at #15.

but if we go CB in round 1 we wont go CB again in round 2.

I don't think this is necessarily the case. The Steelers have recent history of going with the same position with their first two picks. They did it in 2007 with Timmons and Woodley, as well as a couple years ago with Decastro and Adams. They seem to like to take an area of need and turn it into a strength. I like Verrett over all of the potential second round recievers. The only exception may be Matthews but I really dont think he'll be available at that point. This has become a real pass-happy league over the last decade, so I think it's about time we get some real talent at the cornerback position.

Not sure what Dennard playing in Michigan has to do with anything. Are you saying that maybe they are more familiar with his game because he played in their backyard? Really don't think that will carry much weight, Gilberts better, I would love for him to fall for us but don't see that happening.

    1. Gilbert

    2. Evans

    3. Ebron

If none of those 3 are still there, i'd like to see a trade down.

I'm trying to remember how much press man Detroit plays. If that's their primary scheme, then I think they should value Dennard higher than Gilbert. To my eyes, Gilbert looks better with the play in front of him, and Dennard looks better chucking the WR at the line and running with him.

None of those players you mentioned played the same position... They are both O-Linemen or Linebackers, but they play the same position in the same way that Polamalu and Taylor play the same position as members of the secondary. I like Verrett, but IMO we'd be better served drafting one of the WR's. I'd be utterly shocked (and probably upset) if we went rounds 1 and 2 at the same position since we have more holes to fill than we have had in years past. I guess we will see...

I definitely don't know college players to well but we need at least two corners, two outside/inside linebackers and a defensive lineman. But if we have to choose on the first pick between cb and wr it depends on who is available. I would go with the best rated player at that position.

I agree, wont happen. I think CB in the first and then another one in the 4th, they won't go back to back. They will almost certainly take a WR in one of the first 2 rds.
