I figured we'd see a few visits from him before any potential deal would be announced...hopefully they can get one done.

Looks like he won't be attending the second annual Steelers cruise if he's not on the Steelers next year

Of all our FAs, IMO he's the one we can't afford to lose.

    Cotch is easily replaceable.

I'd rather have tried to keep Ziggy Hood on the team.

He is not a make or break player, but it would have given Ben some stability at the WR position. His departure would mean a UFA would be needed AND a draft pick.

Cotch came up big for us last year, would hate to lose him. I thought this was going to be one of the more easy signings.

Assuming he leaves, we should take a look at James Jones. He's turned into a pretty good receiver. Now I have no idea what kind of money he's going to want, so it will of course depend on that, but I think he could help us a lot in the short term as well as shield our young guys a bit for the long term. I just don't think Wheaton is ready to step into a starter role and who knows if he ever will be.

Completely agree. Even though Cothcery is not our #2, he gave Ben confidence in clutch moments. Letting Cotch sign elsewhere leaves us with 1 veteran receiver and a bunch of unproven guys (don't get me wrong, maybe some of them are talented. But unproven so far).

If he goes you can guarantee we take a WR in round one.

    Nope. Just my honest opinion.

Cotch is either a playmaker early and often in games or he is completely irrelevent. There is really no in between. Hood has a bunch more upside.

Chemistry and trust between a QB and his receivers can transcend height, weight, 40 times and any other measurables you can throw out there. Ben and Cotchery have developed the kind of chemistry and trust that makes Cotch a valuable member of the team. I think it would be a setback for our offense if he isn't retained. He's certainly not irreplaceable, and should not be paid a king's ransom, but he's far more than a vet minimum type of player for us.

I would hate to lose Cotchery, but the fact that multiple teams are now showing interest may drive the price up to an unacceptable (and undoable) level for the Steelers.

YES,YES,YES! If he is even remotely affordable, and passes his medical, sign him now.
He has a body of work (see what I did there?) as a big, fast, physical receiver.

doesn't look like we can re-sign all of our guys at vet minimum this year. something is going on around here this year, and there seems to be a mass exodus. hood, keisel, clark, sanders, cotchery, foote, woodley, sly, whimper, velasco, mcbriar, westerman, golden?,dwyer,f.jones?, LSH?,blake?,palmer, fangupo?,woods, levi brown, curtis brown, and thats the guys i can think of off the top of my head that are gone or haven't been offered new contracts. we have kept or signed warren, allen, thomas, mitchell, wallace.

Has Cotchery spoken to the media? Has hi opinion of the franchise changed? In the past he was willing to take less to play for a first rate franchise like the Steelers and he was outspoken about how different it was coming from the Jets locker room to the Steelers. Has that changed? After his initial free agency signing I don't remember him taking meetings with other teams. Is this his way of saying he doesn't think a championship is with in his reach and should focus on financial security?

I don't really understand what you mean by irrelevant. Cotch is not supposed to be a major relevant receiver anyway - that is why Antonio Brown and Heath Miller make big dollars. Cotch played his role superbly last year as a guy who on certain plays can be trusted to catch the ball in traffic and as a safety valve. Ben loves the guy. The guy had 10 TDs and has averaged about 40 catches in his 2 years w/the Steelers. He is supposed to be a guy you can get for $2M a year. I can't blame him for looking for more considering what Steve Smith got from the Ravens. He is worth signing - but it looks like it is going to be a challenging decision to not overpay, but recognize he may be worth a bit more than what the Steelers thought they could pay him.

As far as Ziggy goes - I think he has upside as well, but not in a 3/4 defense. Hood was a terrible pick by Colbert because he never really fit the system. He is meant to be pass rush DE, not a hold the line, bull rush type of guy. I wouldn't be surprised if Ziggy does fairly well in Jacksonville, but it may have a lot to do w/him being in a defense that better suits his skill set.

I have a feeling the Panthers are not going to pass him up. They will get something done with Cotch.

They very well might, their WR position is even more dire, I think along with Steve Smith, Ginn and LaFell are gone as well. Cam has no-one to throw to.
