And wouldn't touch him if he was a GM. Also said he is not a Steelers type player. Nothing news breaking as everyone has known this but seems to be gaining steam since the combine.

    Couple quotes from Dulac:

"Jadeveon Clowney is a freakish athlete but I wouldnt touch him if I were an NFL GM. Just needed to see him for 2 minutes to know he's not a Steelers type player".

"He tested through the roof, of course, because he's a freakish athlete. But there are a lot of questions about his character and work ethic, and I could quickly see why".

He'd make a good GM...for the Browns or Jags. :lolol:

Any GM that wouldn't touch him because of the overblown work ethic smoke should be fired. I don't know why Mayock kept beating that drum so much.

Also, I'd take Colvin in a later round, though I'd take another CB earlier. He'd be a steal. Draft for the future, not for today.

I don't know that Clowney will ever be a bust, but I do think he will be much more successful if he goes somewhere with strong coaches and a strong mentor on the defense who has the cred to tell him how things have to be done. Setting aside scheme, I think Houston is a great fit because of Romeo Crennell and JJ Watt filling those two roles for him. In Crennell's scheme Clowney would be the right OLB, but make no mistake, on passings downs he'd be coming 90% of the time. Having both him and Watt rushing the passer from opposite sides would be tough to handle. If he ends up somewhere like Oakland, who knows what happens?

A lot of maturing can either happen or not happen over the next couple of years.

anyone who thinks he has character problems hasn't done their homework. I know people who are close to the south Carolina program and some people who work with charities out there and they rave about him

    Dangum :lolol:

I agree, I think he will definitely need strong leadership around him. If he tries to get by on just his athleticism, I don't think he will ever reach his true potential. In fact, I can see him getting his fat contract after four years and coasting.

Character issues doesn't necessarily mean he is a bad person, in Clowneys case, it's a question of his commitment and willingness to work hard.

I just think the work ethic stuff is overblown. News outlets like to try to make innocuous comments into a story. Spurrier's comments on his work ethic were twisted into something more than they really were. It was almost like Mayock had an axe to grind with Clowney at the combine.

Because Clowney is such a freak of nature, the media and fans alike will have astronomical expectations for that young man. Much like a younger Julius Peppers, he's gonna be put through the ringer and remain under the microscope. As a Tarheel grad, I'm a big fan of Peppers. Because he didn't kill the QB every single play and have ten sacks a game, he got hammered for 'taking plays off' and having 'no work ethic' while a Panther. But I ask WHAT team wouldn't want a Julius Peppers in his prime on their team?

IMHO, I think Clowney is gonna be an absolute beast in the NFL after he gets a year or two of game experience and NFL coaching.

We'll find out, but if his work ethic really is just ok as Spurrier said, I think he will need to step up that area of his game to be the superstar he is capable of being.

To me, that comment was very much like Ben's preparation is OK, but he's no Peyton Manning. I believe he was comparing him to Lattimore.

Is it because Clowney doesn't spend all offseason stuffing his face and then show up for camp noticeably overweight?

I can't help but laugh when I hear all the junk about a down yr......... The kid was fighting injury and double and triple teams all yr., not to mention plays being run away from him all yr....... despite all that he still managed 11 sacks and 19 tackles for loss..
If that's a poor work ethic, than sign me up!!!!!!!!!

And only 1 sack in the last 33 quarters of the season. Anyway, you guys are getting off topic, the question is not how good his play is on the field, it's how hard he is willing to work off the field. People underestimate how much of a jump from college to the pros is, if he tries to get by on just his talent alone, he won't be nearly as good as he can be.

I live about 45 minutes from the South Carolina campus. Seen many games there as well as Clowney's entire career and I'm here to tell you that he definitely took plays off last year. It could be argued that he took entire games off.

I will say that I've never heard any other character issues, besides driving too fast lol

I think if Clowney ends up in Houston or St Louis, he would do very well for himself. If he ends up in Jacksonville or Oakland, I'm not so sure. As good as he is, I think he going to need someone great on the opposite side to take some of the heat off him. If he's getting double teamed all day, I think he could shut it down. Plus strong coaching and leadership is going to help him out too.

You're numbers are way off. He managed a grand total of 3 sacks, and 11 TFL. I still think he's a great talent, and is worth the #1 overall pick. But if you draft him, you'd better have a plan for how to give him the nurturing that he's going to need to be the player that he can be.

    Clowney is full of talent.

I have never heard one peep out of anyone around the SC/Charlotte area who say he has bad character, but that would be defined as bad behavior...drugs, stealing cars, drunk driving, etc.

I do have to wonder about character when it comes to his ability to keep a level head about him. Has he been pandered to his whole life due to his talent and now has crazy expectations about how he should be treated. Would he want special treatment, etc.?

I think his coach in college best describes his work ethic...average. His numbers, while down this past year, were still very good, but I think what it tells you is that the coach felt like had he really been working hard....they would have been even better.

The question then becomes...does he have the ability to overlook how he has been treated, work harder than anyone else on the team, and reach his full potential? I could see his contract years being huge, while the other years leave you wanting more despite how above average they will be. In other words, it wouldn't surprise me if his coaches just want more from him than he will give them.

I didn't even catch that, that would have given him 11 sacks in like 3 games according to my numbers, lol.

see that's why I don't think its off topic. his work ethic is being questioned because the numbers were down and he sat out with an injury. nobody was questioning it his jr year when he was blowing up everything put in his path. he is the same player that if he come out last year was the first pick hands down.

I think this is where yo uare getting it a bit wrong.

Noone complained about his work ethic in 2012 when he was super productive. You can look pass lousy practice effort when you blow it up in a game. However, the second you stop producing it in games, then those same concerns that were always there will come out. Think Plaxico Burress (amongst many others).

No one in the media complained about it....the reality is his coach who sees him every day...thinks its just okay.
