Last season it was around 123 million, this season it will rise to 130 million per Adam Schefter of ESPN. That's good news for teams like the Steelers who are over the salary cap.

No, it will take more than that, Freak. Brown "only" clears $6.25 Mil. We need to clear in the neighborhood of $9 Mil if $130 Mil is the 2014 cap number.

I agree with this. I didn't realize that the dead money only went up 580k if we released Woodley today. Plus it would get him completely off the books for 2015-2016 which would give us a lot of extra money to keep guys like C.Allen, Heyward, and possibly even Pouncey. I like this option better than the June 1 cut which only helps out like 5mil this year and keeps 9mil on the books for 2015. Basically swallowing a 580k pill (literally nothing) and cutting Woodley is a GIANT step out of salary cap hell. It's almost a no-brainer to me. Once Worilds is signed, Woodley is bye-bye pre-June 1:dancing:

Once we sign Worilds and purge Woodley, all we really need to do is cut L. Brown (6.25mil) and Foote (1.16mil), extend Ben and Heath, and restructure AB/Timmons to be in solid shape. Releasing Ike will give us the money needed to sign Worilds (Ike could always take a pay cut that puts his cap hit under the dead money too... that would be nice). Once all that is done, we let Troy walk after 2014 and we are actually in very good shape moving forward with the cap. Yes, we are in bad shape cap-wise now, but with a few good decisions it can be corrected in a very short time frame

Good points. Enough of this over or up against the cap.

Time to purge. Ike, bye. A liability. Time for LeBeau to get the younger player on the field. Now. Lets see if LeBeau can adjust to the younger game. Not sure. He loves his vets. The Defense was a liability and it lies at the feet of the DC.

I think he started doing that last year. now we need to see the improvement of them in the second year. that's the task at hand.

adding even more young players isn't a bad thing but we can't expect it to run like a seasoned group from day one either. any new guys should look like this years new guys, but the difference will be they are not playing with a group of seasoned vets, they will be playing with guys that should be taking another step forward. a tough task for any co-O, but I like having a proven coach trying to make it happen as opposed to someone trying to put their brand of defense on the field at the same time. that just makes everything young and new. I'm very comfy with DL bringing the D back to form.

Agree, time to continue the youth movement on the defensive side of the ball. We need to get younger and build depth. Something we haven't had for quite a while...

Why not purge Troy as well - that move would save the Steelers over $8 million on the cap. I know he has been great but is he really worth almost $11 million of cap space?

If we draft a safety in the first round, we could definitely think about it. I just don't think we have enough depth at the S position to get rid of Troy. We would be basically replacing both starting safeties in Clark and Troy... so who would you put in? Shark obviously, but we have NOTHING at the position outside of him. The only way I see this happening is if we bring in a free agent (starting caliber) FS, and draft a young safety in the earlier part of the draft. Idk if I fully trust Golden or DVD as a viable option if anyone got hurt. It's one thing to save 8 mil, but we don't have the players to cover for Troy's void this year. We should come 2015 though.

    2014
FS l FA, 2014 pick, Golden
    SS l Troy, Shark

    2015
FS l FA, 2014 pick, Golden
    SS l Shark, 2015 pick/vet FA

This is how the safety position should pan out IMO.

Now the cap might go up to 132 million maybe now the Steelers can go and sign some free agents.
