Over the last few years the Seattle Seahawks have become the poster boys for the new NFL. From working closely with Nike to develop cutting edge uniforms that are marketable to their fan base to an immersive fan experience at their home stadium to a team built largely through solid drafting. They are everything that Roger Goodell wants to put forward as the image of the changing face of the NFL.

So after playing in the league's premier event on Sunday and winning it utilizing a style of play more reminiscent of Steeler football does it signal a return to that style or is it a huge black eye for the league and a PR nightmare for Goodell who has tried to present a safer game with emphasis on player safety above all else. Make no mistake the Seahawks hit everyone on every play, destroy them, punch them in the mouth, smash mouth strategy was until recently the way the Steelers used to play every and are no gun shy to return to with the Commissioner's increased fines for legal hits once so much a part of the game. The hits leveled in the Super bowl every bit as violent as hits by Harrison and Clark and ones that drew penalties during the season. It begs the question if this type of play is allowed in the biggest game of the year could it . Return to the regular season,

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if the opposite happens.

Goodell cracks down even harder on aggressive defenses. After all, most people called this SB "boring." And Goodell thinks only high flying offense are fun to watch.

Of course, I'm being facetious here, but the following rule changes would not surprise me in the least:

    - Defensive backs are outlawed from game play. Only LBs with a greater than 4.8 second 40 are allowed to defend passes.

    - elimination of 5 yard chuck rule and imposition of a 5 yard "halo" around all receivers. Contact prior to a receiver catching the ball AND taking 5 steps is a personal foul subject to 15 yards, possible ejection from the game, 75K fine and 3 game suspension.

    - Defenses are only allowed to have 6 men on the field at any time. 4 of them MUST stay on the LOS.
    - Those 4 men cannot actually rush the QB until or unless they stand still and count to 5 Mississippi

    - If a QB is harassed, hit, nudged, or in any way annoyed by contact prior to throwing or during the action of throwing a ball, the play is considered dead and a repeat of the down occurs.

So really those that are calling this Super Bowl "boring" are closet Goodell fans?! Well thankfully I loved every minute of this Super Bowl! LOL! Just kidding about the Goodell part. I really do wish this kind of football would be on display every week. It gave me hope as a Steelers fan that we can still do things the old fashioned way and have success. You're right though that they probably will change even more rules to benefit the offense. I honestly believe that Goodell was NOT happy with this game but WOULD have been if the the bronco's OFFENSE had put up 43 and the hawks had the 8. The majority of the hype for 2 weeks was all about the broncos offense and an offensive player more than anything. Offense is just "sexier" for the media I guess.

First, this year's Super Bowl was boring, but that wasn't due to the style, it was due to the scoreboard being a blowout.

Second, the NFL never left this style. The Steelers STILL want to do it, they just don't have the horses to play that system.

The reason I didn't think this Super Bowl ever got boring was because the defense never seemed to be content and they didn't start playing what would basically be tantamount to "defensive Marty Ball". They kept pressuring and hitting and I mean hard. If they had just played to basically protect a big lead then I would agree that it was boring. But because they played with so much heart I found it incredibly fun to watch.

Doesn't change the fact that the outcome was never in doubt, that is BORING. I didn't really have a horse in this race, was just hoping to see a competitive game, the SB was on a good run, exciting games that went down to the wire, this game broke that streak, hope there isn't another one like it for a long time unless we are the ones dishing out the beating :hehehe:

It was widely criticized as being boring. Like you said, BF, the outcome was never in doubt. When a team is just blown out without hope, most viewers aren't going to be entertained.

I'm sure it was a dud of a game for those that just casually tune in to the NFL and especially for that game specifically. I'm just saying for me personally I enjoyed watching it. It was actually the most watched program in the history of tv, in spite of that fact.

The "analysts" though were absolutely gushing about how fun they thought this game was to watch though. I saw Heath Evans the other day talking about how he thought it was an awesome thing to see. Most of the guys on NFL Network seemed to really like it and not think it was boring. Am I the only one on here that actually found it fun from start to finish? I know some guys liked the defense but I don't think I've heard any of them say they were "bored" or not. Actually, for me personally, this is the most fun I've had watching a Super Bowl in a really long time. I'm with you though. I would love to see us do that to a team in the Super Bowl.

Yeah. I imagine all the snow bowl hype helped with that some. I doubt people were calling their friends during the 3rd quarter to tell them to turn it on because of how amazingly exciting it was. :lolol:

:lolol: Exactly, worst SB I have seen in a long time.

Blount, I don't know what you're are talking about, I haven't heard a single analyst say that was a good game. Dominant performance by Seattle? Yes. Awesome D, yes, not one thought it a good game though. I like defense every bit as much as you and I am not a casual watcher, that game was boring as hell.

Oops, sorry Thorn, derailing your thread. I think several teams have already figured out how to work within the rules. Seahawks, 49ers and Panthers are all hard hitting tough defenses. I think we have just been in an adjustment period, I believe you will see more and more teams begin to ramp it up, it won't ever be to the point like it was, but as Seattle just proved, can still have a dominating defense.

Heath Evans, Sean Merriman, and Curtis Conway were talking about how "awesome" it was to watch on a show I was watching. They were talking about how brilliant the schemes were and how fun it was to watch peyton be confused by their coverages. I'm actually paying peyton a compliment by saying I liked the game because I also enjoyed watching him try to figure out the d. If anyone could have cracked the code he could have. That was another element I enjoyed about it. I have it on dvr and might actually watch it again really. Me and my boy freak are gonna have a Super Bowl REviewing party. LOL. You and TTF can come if you want.

P.S., TTF and I will watch the Steelers 6 SB's. Seahawks and NE fans not invited :lolol:

A good defensive effort by Seattle. Probably the second best defensive effort in SB history. Stats tell us the BEST defensive effort was the Steelers in SB IX. They gave up 6 points, the second lowest number of points given up in a SB. Miami gave up only 3 in one of the SB's. Of course the 6 points the Steelers gave up wasn't on the defense. It was on special teams, on a blocked punt the Vikings recovered in the end zone. The Steelers gave up the lowest number of total yards (117) in SB history and had five turnovers. And a lot of us don't even think that was the best defense of the 70's dynasty. All I know is for that one SB game that was the best defensive effort period that has ever been played in SB history. I remember watching that game and just thinking over and over " these guys are really bad a$$ ". I'm a homer to some extent and I've been proud of the Steelers many times over the many years, but never any prouder than that day. Not only because of their defensive preformance but because that was the first SB won by the Steelers. I waited thirty years for the first one and sure am glad I didn't need to wait that long for the second, third and fourth SB trophys. Had to wait just a little while for numbers 5 and 6. Im thinking it isn't going to be too long of a wait for number 7.

What's amazing is that after Super Bowl 13 Chuck Noll said "I don't think we've peaked yet" and when I saw that press conference the first time I got to see that game in its entirety I was amazed that he said that. I mean how much better could they have possibly gotten?

of defense you saw Sunday night. Tell
me who on the current Steeler defense
may start for the Hawks? Maybe one
Timmons, thats if he decides to show up
and play. Seahawks play with passion,
    Steelers????
