I realize that if KC had beaten the Chargers, the Steelers would have been in the playoff, but I thought the Dolphins would be in because they beat the Steelers in the regular season. They both had a 8-8 record so the tie breaker would be head-to-head matchup. why did the steelers get ahead of the dolphins?

If there is a wild card tie breaker between three or more teams, they use intra-divisional tie breakers first. Since the Jets beat the Dolphins, they finished ahead of them in the division. Just like we finished ahead of the Ravens etc.

    Bingo.

In week 16, I had the same question as the OP. I had to research it to understand the tie-breaker rule, in this situation.

Had the Chargers lost there would have been 5 teams at 8-8. Usually with just three you can throw out the head to head.

Exactly which tie breaker would have put the Steelers in anyhow? I don't remember seeing that anywhere. I just figured it was the best conference record. With 5 teams it was hard to believe any other things would apply.

There were 4 teams still in contention for a wildcard spot. The Steelers would have made it in because they would have had the division tie-breaker, eliminating the Ravens, then, they would have had the better conference win percentage over the Chargers.
