I read this online and it said the Steelers have 3 of the top 25 players in the NFL with the biggest salary cap jumps. Taylor goes from 5.8 to 11.9 million Timmons 5.8 to 11.8 and Ben 13 to 18.8. Offseason priority re-sign Ben to a cap friendly deal and redo Timmons deal cut Taylor probably won't happen the Steelers love players past their prime in their thirties. More likely they ask Taylor to take a pay cut they also need to figure out what to do with Polamalu I think his cap hit is 10 million.

troys cap hit is 10-----savings of 8 if cut

don't get too worked up it's not as bad as it looks...

troy or ike either have to take a pay cut or will not be back.... i doubt that timmons will get restructured

i posted a thread a lil while ago that outlined a few things that can be done and we will have plenty of room

s we sit here on December 17th we currently stand about 7.1 Mil OVER the salary cap for 2014...that is with not signing any of our or anyone else's free agents or any of our draft picks or undrafted free agents...

I am looking into a crystal ball and seeing how some guys will be able to be resigned....

If the following 4 moves would be made we would stand at 22 mil under the cap...that is without resigning any of the free agents on our team or signing draft picks

    CUTS

Troy --- Savings Approx 8 mil
Ike --- Savings Approx 7 mil
Levi Brown ---- Approx 6 mil
Woodley (JUNE 1st CUT)---- Approx 8 mil

A 5th Option would be to restructure AB which will save another 4 mil...he is the only guy I would restructure this year

so resigning some of these guys ie...sanders and worlids is not as far fetched as it may seem

Food for thought as to who will be back next year.... I am guessing 1 of the 4 either troy or Ike unless both take about 50% pay cuts....but you know how that works... im guessing ike

Idk if people realize 7 players take up 67% of our cap

How open to restructuring would AB be, I wonder?

I'm struggling to see how Ike stays next season. At the same time, I'm struggling to see what happens to the secondary without him.

He will restructure in a heart beat... most guys would... Restructuring is different from taking a pay cut...they just get their base salary that current year up front in 1 lump sum and then spread out over the length of the contract...

I agree 100% with your Ike assessment ... We cant afford him at his current salary although your starting CBs in 2014 without him

The players love restructuring, but they shouldn't. The team restructures these players and push cap hits off till latter in thier contract then when the time comes to take the cap hit the fans all cry about how much these guys are making and want them cut. A lot of these players that are being restructured aren't making as much in those latter years as thier cap hit would have the uninformed believe. Most players that restructure need to understand that they will probably be cut in thier last few years.
The fans focus thier negativity toward the players when in reality the should be mad at the team.
In some cases this prevents some HOF caliber players from finishing thier career with thier original team.

Cut Ike he's not worth it!
Cut Troy he's not worth it!
    Blah, Blah , Blah.

Brown should be the only one approached about a restructure, if at all. Dead money is also strangling the cap. Mortgaging the future.

LeBeau if he is retained needs to lighten up on this complicated scheme in order to get younger players on the field sooner. It's the way contracts are now, 4 years.

The draft should be corner, safety, corner. Then fill the rest. Hopefully dumping contracts and freeing up money will allow them to possibly look outside for corner help. They won't throw big money at a free agent, that never happens. But at least they can be players.

Ike as well as Troy might not be on the roster next season. I would ask Troy to take a cut to stay. Ike. Another year, another year slower. Time to cut ties. The defense needs to get younger. It was the reason this season was what it was.

that's fine if it was all about the player. I happen to be a steeler fan, and if that's whats best for the team as a whole then so be it.

sure it's nice if all the fans favorites could stay and retire on their schedule, but it just doesn't always work out that way.

I'm a steeler fan and the rooney's own the whole steelers team. it's not up to them to wait for players to retire or put them into the HOF. it's to put trophies in the case and butts in the seats and increase it's sales. sometimes the business end come's in to play.

these players get old, it's just a fact of life, but you don't hurt the rest of the team to let them retire here.

I'm not suggesting keeping a player that is not performing, talking about productive players being cut because they have been restructured and their cap hit is to high.

You're looking at it the wrong way. Most players understand that their big multi-year contract number isn't fully guaranteed. I don't get any of the negativity for players or teams. There are no bad guys really. Just two sides trying to work within the confines of today's NFL system.

and none of them are hurting for money, or shouldn't be. even if they are cut before all of their contract is paid. nor are the owners hurting, but their old business plans have to change with the times.

most of these guys are compensated better than the average middle class worker...but dont forget this is the NFL not MLB...there is a cap and most guys aren't getting paid multi million dollar contracts....go look at the steelers roster and you will see that 7 guys take up abut 67 % of the cap....the rest are playing on low contracts..that being said 500,000 a year is a lot better then 50,000

those guys are not under these long term contracts. they are mostly one year guys. half a mil a year is no small potatoes.

I disagree about Timmons his cap hit is too high he's still young enough for the team to restructure his contract. If the team needs some salary cap relief he's a candidate.

You can only rob Peter to pay Paul for so long. At some point you have to release players and live with the cap hit short term.

you have to figure that Keisel and Clark probably played their last games as Steelers.

Ike and Woodley are both being considered as being released.

Troy is a Steeler and it would be a crime to see him go. i dont want another Rod Woodson scenario.

Ben is due a big payday, but i hope he signs a very cap friendly deal.

AB and Timmons probably need their deals restructured.

im not apposed to the trying to keep Sanders. i wouldnt break the bank, but i think some team will.

not sure what they do on the oline. Pouncey and Velasco are both very good, but Velasco is going to be much cheaper. i would rather see them keep Velasco and use the Pouncey money somewhere else.

Levi Brown is probably gone unless he takes a huge pay cut.

Foote is under contract and i think he will be back unless they think Williams can take that next step.

if they loose Sanders than it will be between Wheaton and Moye to see who can take that #2 spot. Cotch is perfect as the #3 guy.

they need to bring back Dwyer. he did everything that you can ask for from a third down back. Jones should be gone and maybe Howlings can stay healthy and he would be their return and change of pace rb.

i dont think this team is that far away from being back on top. i think we need to be prepared for some major changes. this is the time for them to let some of these older guys go and put more responsibility on the younger guys.

they almost made the playoffs at 8-8. i would rather see them make some major changes and take their chances at getting 9 to 10 wins next year and that would probably get them into the playoffs.
