It's not that we're losing, it's the way we're losing. It's the records that we're setting and that are being set against us along the way. Losing the first four games of the season for the FIRST TIME IN 45 YEARS. Allowing Terrelle Pryor TO RUN FOR A 93 YARD TD, THE LONGEST BY A QB AND A RAIDER IN NFL HISTORY. Giving up 610 YARDS IN OFFENSE, THE MOST WE'VE EVER GIVEN UP AND THE MOST THE PATRIOTS HAVE EVER GAINED. Allowing the Pats TO SCORE 55 POINTS, ONCE AGAIN THE MOST WE'VE GIVEN UP AND THE MOST THE PATS HAVE EVER SCORED. Allowing 3 receivers TO GAIN 100 YARDS IN ONE GAME FOR THE FIRST TIME IN PATS HISTORY WHILE ALSO GIVING UP A 100 YARD RUSHER AND ALMOST 200 YARDS TOTAL ON THE GROUND FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE WEEK. Giving up SCORING PLAYS OF 80 YARDS OR LONGER IN TWO CONSECUTIVE GAMES. Generating virtually NO PASS RUSH AND NO TURNOVERS. Being OUSTCORED 61-19 IN THE FIRST QUARTER. On pace to have our WORST RECORD SINCE BILL AUSTIN HANDED THE REINS OVER TO CHUCK NOLL. Allowing Tim Tebow, TIM TEBOW, TO PASS FOR 316 YARDS AND 3 TDS AGAINST US. I know this goes back a couple of years, but I can't forget about it.

This is indicative of a team that is totally unprepared to play football. Is it also indicative of a team that the Head Coach has completely lost?

We're really bad unfortunately...losing to bad teams (Minn, Oak, Tenn) and getting killed along the way. And the two games we won, were vs. marginal opponents where we scored only 1 TD in each game.

Things are bad all around. The perfect storm of steaming dung that we're seeing this year isn't the result of coaching alone. There's a dearth of talent on this roster that's really bad - even worse than I thought it would be at the onset of the season. The young guys that we have picked up over the past few years have generally proven to be marginal NFL talent, particularly in the trenches on both sides of the ball. An infusion of new coaching may help, but a roster overhaul should be in this team's future (to the extent that our precarious cap situation allows).

I was just saying something about this the other day. How many records can we set or help other teams set that make us look bad? Apparently, far too many to count! Someone the other day said to me, well, aside from Cincinatti, there aren't any really good teams left on the schedule for us. I just kind of stared at them thinking "does it matter the way we've lost to some reaaaaallllly bad teams already?".

    *sigh*

Maybe the talent level isn't as bad as our performance suggests. Maybe our guys talent isn't being utilized correctly. Square peg ,round hole comes to mind. The most important job of a coach is for them to put players in the best position to succeed. They should be giving them all the tools needed to be the best they can be. Preparation is the best tool and I don't think our guys are being properly prepared. There are countless examples of this.

I have often stated that I can handle losing. But I can't handle losing when it stems from lack of effort, execution, fundamentals, and attention to details. If the Steelers get beat playing their best, then so be it. The other guys were the better team that day/night. But far too often the past few years, they seem to get beat mostly because of their own dumb play--turnovers, missed tackles, etc. In other words, too often they beat themselves.

I believe you are correct. As a side note, the two games in 1991 in which they gave up the 50+ game and 40+ game were against the eventual Super Bowl participants: Washington and Buffalo. And just to illustrate the kind of heart that team had, after getting shell-shocked at home by Washington, the Steelers came back the next week and defeated a very good Houston team.

As for another record that might be broken, Roethlisberger is well on his way to breaking his record and the team record for sacks given up in a season. Ben's record was a little over 50 in one season, the team record is 57 or 58 by Cliff Stoudt back in the early 80's. Ben has been sacked 31 times so far and thus is on pace for over 60 sacks this season.

This is exactly how I feel. I am in now way expecting an undefeated season....however, I am expecting effort, passion, and, when those dont happen, some changes to be made.

Namely they need to quit restructuring old guys contracts instead of replacing them with young talent: We have a great chance since we are going to be picking high in this next draft to draft some good talent cheap, since the rookie salary cap keeps them in their rook contract for four years: Teams are taking advantage of Undrafted free agents and the rookie salary cap in the draft to make their roster younger, the cards replaced 23 players on their roster this year, the pats put 14 rookies on their roster and other teams are doing it as well, we cant keep restructuring contracts to keep players around here when they obviously have digressed in their production, if the coaches here are to lazy to coach up rookies, and instead want to keep the old players around, then they need to go too....

The Steeler defense is ranked 31st in rushing yards allowed, it has been that way for a little bit and it is the reason we got beat by Tebow. In order to stop the run LeBeau has to bring the DBs and Lbers, everytime they go into coverage a handoff turns into a big gain. Aaron Smith, and Casey Hampton and Bret Keisel were not only run stoppers, they got penetration and disrupted pass plays too but Keisel has lost a step and is still better than Ziggy Hood, Heyward is better than Hood but that really isn't saying much, and McClendon looks good but as long as the Hood/Heyward side continues to be easily blocked by one lineman, the other 2 guys are going to get double teamed all day, a new defensive front will help the entire defense.

Or maybe the team isn't that good and is severely lacking talent and doesn't have any speed on defense. Also a QB who has become a turnover machine and one of the worst O-lines in the league.

    I agree with the OP...
    This season is ABYSMAL(spelling?)!
I have never seen us play this poorly, and I`ve been thru the 80`s, thru now....(Actually remember the late 70`s when we won our 3d and 4th Bowl`s, but I was only 6, in 78...)
I`ve just NEVER seen this kind of crappy perfomance, from players, I consider pretty damn good(capable of winning Superbowls, as a group)...
NEVER in my life, have I considered the Clowns better than us... Till Now...
    It Sucks!!!
Oh yeah, what was the original point?
    Has Tomlin "lost" the team?
    I dunno....
I just think nowadays, the players are more selfish, and play more for the money, than for the love of the game(with a FEW exceptions)...
Hard to find a TEAM, that actually cares about each other, like we were based on, back in the 70`s, or like the players "SAY" they are now, when contracts are what they are, and when players jump from one team to another, and party with each other, "off the clock", no matter what team they play for "on the clock"...
We like to believe we are different than that, and maybe, even recentley, when Ben "promised" to get the Bus to the Bowl, if he would play one more year, and we had Hines...
    MAYBE... we still had that...
But when we have "The young Money Crew", thinking about their contracts, before their contributions...
It gets tuff for players like Heath, or Keisel, or Polamalou, or Clark, or anyone else, that`s left like that, to hold a "team" together...
Not sure the players today, have the pride in their "team", that players fronm the past did... How could they, when they can be traded to another team, at any time? Or go play for another team, for more money, if they want?
Kinda blows up the whole "band of brothers" philosophy...
And when you go thru tuff stretches, like we are right now...
We need that "Band of Brothers" attitude...
Not, "Well, I`ll play my best, because I know I am auditioning for another team to give me the big bucks, next year"...
Can`t be changed. Can`t be helped... But Not sure I blame Tomlin 100%, for not being able to bring a "team" together...
    Times have changed...
He needs to somehow re-capture the "magic" of playing for the Black and Gold, that past players have established...
Maybe, he could show Hines`s "retirement speech" to the players he`s got now, and ask them if it would mean anything to them, to create a team together, they would never want to leave?
They`d probably laugh, and say, "Sure coach... As long as ya pay me"...
    Rant over.
    GO STEELERS!

    Ding, ding, ding! Here's another!
Halfway through this season, they average 3.5 yards a carry and are on pace to have 1,178 yards rushing. They are threatening the franchise low of 1,092 yards rushing in 1966, when they played only 14 games. That team averaged 78 yards per game; this one clocks in at 73.6 yards per game.

isn't this league wide though? most teams rushing yardage is down with the pass becoming more a part of the offense.
