Strange post........but I have to agree with most of what you said Glenn. And like Blast pointed out, I think the OP's rant was out of frustration over a few that seem to gloat about the lack of success the Steelers are having right now. Pointing out team deficiencies is one thing but some posters seem to be enjoying it a little too much.

I'm going to suggest that TTF appoint you the official psychologist of this message board. Lord knows we all need one!

I think this post and Blasts best describe my frustration. The other part is the same people who complain about the same things over and over and over. At some point we need a new topic other than the half dozen that keep getting recycled.
I definitely understand people's frustration with the team right now and I have a lot of them too.
Hope I haven't pissed anyone off with this topic, kinda just wanted to let people know what drives my frustration towards my fellow Steeler fans. I'll work on being more tollerant.

I don't think your "social group" explanation fits Glenn's thread, 12to88, but let me ask you this- under this sociological phenomon, at what point do people who aren't happy with their social group just decide to find another group?

I can only think of the analogy of a neighborhood. You hate most of your neighbors. Confront them over the fence constantly about the way they mow their lawn, the way they dress their kids, the way they park their car when they get home at night. At what point do you just go find a different place to live?

As I said earlier, these types of threads are bad on various levels. To quote the OP "Look at me!!". Aside from that, there's no good in criticizing or publicly critiquing the way certain people post. If you have something to add to a discussion, fine. Going from thread to thread flaming people because they're too critical for your liking is not OK.

If someone posts something offensive, truly offensive, report it. A mod will look into it. As I mentioned in a different thread, don't draw unnecessary attention to something that others might be offended by. Especially if they happened to have one of their kids on their lap etc.

It has never been so difficult for me to NOT be negative about my favorite team...
Then again, I have NEVER had such high expectations of them, completeley crushed, by the way they have been playing...
probably, why I have been doing a lot more reading, than posting, lately...
I have NEVER, had a problem, answering other team`s fans` smack talk(esp the Clowns, since I live among them), with...
Yeah, well we are consisitentley better than you... look at what we have done... just wait, we`ll kick yer ass, or whoever`s ass, we play next... "look at the talent on our team"... etc, etc,,...
    Right now, tho...
    I`m in unfamiliar territory...
My Black and Gold glasses have been shattered, and I am seeing the painful truth of what we are putting on the field, week in, and week out, this season.(Including Pre-season, which "didn`t matter")...
Yes, I will always cheer for us, and hope we find a way to win, but, for the first time in my life, I just don`t have an answer, to other team`s fans, as to why we are better than them.
    I am confused.
We still have Ben, Troy, Heath, Clark, A. Brown, Keisel, Woodley, Timmons, Sanders, Dwyer, etc, etc...
A pretty Damn good team, from top to bottom...
Been fighting th poor O-line issues, for three years, or more, and all of a sudden, we just can`t get the job done?!?1
Yeah, I know we`ve pulled out a lotta close wins over the last few years, but, we pulled em out...
    Now?
We can`t seem to find "up", when we are laying on our back, looking up at the sky...
This is my team, and I will ALWAYS stand by it, but they aren`t giving me much to hang my hat on lately...
So, yeah, I might be a bit critical of us right now...
    Why shouldn`t I be?
Look at the success we are used to...
It just ain`t there right now, and there are so many reasons, I don`t even know where to start trying to find the solution...
I trust our front office will..
Until then... This place is my "therapy"... Knowing that I am not the only frustrated one... and not the only one that has faith the Rooney`s will figure it out, and get the ship right soon.
(This year, tho... it`s turning out like the 80`s... I will root for `em, but can`t really back `em up in the bar arguments...
It`s more like... Yeah, we suck right now, but we`ll be back..)
I`m not really used to that, and I didn`t think it would happen while Ben was still behind center... but, here it is...
I will stay loyal, just like plenty of Clown`s fans have, over the years...
I know I won`t have to wait as long as them, to see my franchise turn it around, but, I can truly understand what they have been going thru, now..
When we had our down years before, I knew we weren`t going to be good.
This is the first time I had higher expectations, than my boys, delivered on... It hurts.
But, I am still Black and Gold to the core!
More realistic about things, than I was when I was younger, but I`m still at a loss to explain this season.
Most of us weren`t born, the last time we went 0-4, and I`m prety sure even our harshest/most "realistic" fans didn`t expect this..
    It is what it is...
I just hope we keep finding something to play for(Because pride, really hasn`t shown, yet..)....
And start making teams beat us, instead of us just not scoring on them...
    WAKE UP DAMMIT!!!
Give me something to point to, when other teams fans ask why I keep rooting for the Black n Gold!!!
(Other than 6 Lombardis, and, "tradition",..."obviously";))

Thanks a lot for this... 40 years of being a fan and now you tell me I don't have any control over how the team performs. I beg to differ! I was personally responsible for our team being the first ever 6th seed to go on and win a Superbowl...your welcome! No control over them winning my pa-tooty (by the way I have always wanted to use pa-tooty in a post). I agree with Glenn's sentiment but do so in my own head. I'm not a huge fan of joining the negative posts but do get some useful info out of some of them. Yes, I'm frustrated and know that this team is underperforming/missing something/not meshing/etc. (take your pic), however, I my frustration comes from loving the team not the trends of the NFL. I've been around long enough to know that every team goes through cycles...guess it is our turn. I'll be a fan each Sunday for many years and can wait until we are on top again!

Well, social identity looks at our allegiance to groups, and you are right: if you are involved in a club or group and don't like it, you leave. But it becomes more difficult with things that are deeply ingrained in us. I didn't want to bring up politics, but it is another example. What we see in politics these days has nothing to do with what is best for our nation; instead, it's about what is best for the party. Elections are about "OUR SIDE" winning and NOT about trying to do what's best for the country. Hence why almost all political ads are attack ads. It's rarer to find candidates simply running on their ideas; instead, they run to "DEFEAT" the opponent. Watergate was a perfect example.

As far as internal conflict, that is called "Intra-group Dynamics," in which the inner workings of groups are researched. In many ways, fans on this board operate like a large, extended virtual family. We have debates, conflicts, etc., but in the end we all know we would defend each other from "outside" criticism. In other words, we all get angry with Ben or Ryan, but quite often, I find, if a Bengals or Ravens fan attacks Ben or Ryan, what do we do? Circle the wagons.

    Good post.
Wondering if I just take some of the over the top posts as an attack on the Steelers and that's why I get so defensive ? Thoughts.
