Seems that most any game I watch besides the Steelers there's always a camera shot of a head coach coaching up a group of players on the sideline usually after a tough series and usually going over game photos.
Maybe I'm just imagining it, but does Tomlin just not do that?
I'm not blasting him just curious if they just don't show it on TV or if its just not Tomlin's style of coaching? Maybe he doesn't micromanage and let's the assistant coaches handle that?
Maybe someone who attends the games could answer this better?

I don't think I ever see a head coach doing that. I guess I watch different games. I did see him a couple of years ago when I was at the chargers game on a sunday night meet ike halfway on the field and chewed his butt all the way to the sideline after he got a personal foul penalty for taking a cheap shot on gates

I've seen him a few times rally the troops and talk to a group like the Oline. But not this year.

Me neither. That's the co-ordinators job.

Out of interest, I wonder if this thread will become another one where Tomlin is labelled a bad coach for not shouting and jumping like Harbaugh? Not that this was what Glenn was referring to, of course. I just sense it coming...

I haven't observed Tomlin coaching groups of players, that doesn't mean he doesn't do that at all though.

What I have seen that really ticks me off the most is his ... folded-arms, staring up at clock, and rolling his eyes when we are behind with around 5 or so minutes to go look.

What got me thinking about it was watching the Rams Seahawks last night and at one point I saw Pete Carol talking briefly with a group of players. Looked like from the hand gestures he was trying to explain something to them.

Well if it goes in that direction that wasn't the intent of the thread.

Right, and mostly just positional coaches at that. Tomlin gets after players and assistants on the sidelines sometimes, though it's not something you see very often on TV, but that goes for any team really. Heck, you don't even get to see replays of injuries or penalties half the time. Pete Carroll is very energetic, though.

He was coaching up Clark really good on the sidelines. he looked like a rabid dog following him up and down the sidelines. I think it was right after Clark either missed the interception or missed Pryor on that 93 yard TD

He's probably not going near the players on purpose for fear that he'll grab somebody by the throat the way most of them are playing.

I seen him talk to individual players both coordinators are on the sideline, so they probably would talk to the players in a group.

You see him a lot with linebackers. Once in a great while the D-line but mostly with backers.

Carroll drives me nuts, lol. That guy can not stand still for one freaking second. He's constantly walking the sidelines, back and forth, chomping on his gum.

I think that since he isn't involved in calling the game on either side of the ball and rather is in the flow of the game he has less coaching to do and more talking to the players about how they are feeling what they are seeing and so forth. The discovery channel special on the London game showed him asking Troy how every one was. I think if he was more involved in actual play calling like a Billichek, Payton, or Carroll he would have more coaching to do, since he has delegated so much he lets the position coaches do their job.

If anyone watched the Steelers vs. Vikings London special, Tomlin basically talks to his captains and leaves it to them to "rally the troops." It makes sense really. Position coaches are in charge of paying attention to schemes and technique throughout the game. Tomlin's job is more big picture.

There's a point in the game against the Vikings, I believe it was after the long touchdown by Greg Jennings. Tomlin says something to Polamalu along the lines of "what's the secondary's morale look like, how are they doing?" Polamalu says they're fine, and Tomlin tells him to make sure they move past it and make the next play. Something along those lines.

I know people want to bash Tomlin for everything that happens. Maybe, in this case, this is a result of Tomlin wanting to "force" certain guys on the team into leadership roles. There's been lots of talk about the loss of natural leaders like Hines and Farrior. Maybe this is Tomlin trying to counter that?

Tomlin is a useless tool. His hands clapping was replaced by thumbs up against Oakland if anybody even noticed. This team is better than its record indicates!

Are you kidding me??? Have you never seen a Patriots game?? Bellichik is ALWAYS coaching up the players, especially the defense. Sometimes he doesn't even watch the offense because he is coaching the defense. Come on! You have got to have seen that.

Game day highlight vids on Steelers.com shows Tomlin working the sidelines... coaching up along with getting in faces. Each coach in the league have their own style. I take nothing from not seeing action on the sideline i want to see positive plays and wins on the field. They have the necessary personnel to coach up though by their performance you wouldn't think so, but players have to execute their assignments and i'm seeing lack there of.

Right now I think it is more of a lack of execution and people trying to do too much instead of their assignments. You can tell there is a lack of trust amongst the team right now. It should be I will do my job which will allow X person to make the play. Instead it is I have to make the play because I can't count on player X to be where they need to be.

This can be said in every aspect of the game right now. There is an overall lack of trust with this team and it started during the pre-season and nothing I have seen so far leads me to change my opinion.

Really? I've never seen it when I have to sit through a Patriots game. I just see him in his hood, looking all stoic for the most part. How many Patriots games do you watch?

Good post. Major lack of execution in all 3 phases this season.
