Yeah I don't like the cushions either and have complained profusely about them for a while now but Tomlin was saying today on his show that good pass rush is the best corner play he can think of and I guess that makes sense but if they played up a little it could take away those little dump offs. I'm not complaining though because I thought, all things considered today, the d seemed in command of the game all day. They didn't give up a td til very late in the game and they flushed Flacco out a lot today.

Yes but wasn't Aaron Smith, Bret Keisel and Big Snack our front three. They are way better than what we start now aside from Deisel who is still playing.

We are not getting the pressure or the turnovers we used too. I think this is the reason we are a good but not elite defense now

The comment was " we haven't been good for a while" a guess a while is less than a season and a half.
Cleveland hasn't been good for a while.
Jacksonville hasn't been good for a while.
Don't think I'm ready to put the Steelers in that group.

Our number one pick should be a defensive end who can get to the QB. Our pass rush is not too good.

Im not really getting why there is a debate going on here. Yes, we were in the Super Bowl three years ago, but that doesnt mean our defense was "good" then. In fact, they got majorly exposed in that game. I dont think there is anything wrong with people coming on here saying our D could use a little work. I also thought on the Raven's drive where they tied up the game that our d was incredibly soft and left the middle wide open. I was yelling at DL to dial something up so that they werent just marching down the field. This not to say that there werent some great plays - and I dont think anyone is saying that. Woodley and Timmons both had solid games as did Gay and Troy.

I'm not opposed at all to people posting that our defense could use a little work. What bugs me is that we just won, the fans haven't even cleared out of the stadium and the same few people are starting the same tired ass threads about how bad the defense is. We get it!
I think it was BF who said it best. We have a bend but don't break defense. Might as well get used to it.

Probably best to ignore them then.

The defense is just as bad as the offense, the team looked a lot better, the run game was much improved as was the play of the oline. The defense you could say improved by not letting any big plays happen but on a 2nd and 14 the CB (IKE) gives a 20 yard cushion, (he started 12 yards off and back pedaled 8 as soon as the ball was snapped) that allows for an 18 yard completion is unexcuseable. The D did better against the run but the thing that is luck I guess is the long drives they allowed limited the possessions because the Ravens scored on every possession except for 2, how that happens and yet still win is amazing in itself but no pass rush or even being close enough for INTs is going to hurt down the road.

I think what it comes down to is labels. I believe we have a good defense, I don't believe we have a great defense and I think that's what people are getting at, it's not great. To say it's not good, I really don't get that. The name of the game is to keep the opponents out of the endzone, not how many picks or sacks you can get and they keep teams out of the endzone pretty well. The sacks and picks would help, not denying that but this defense is good as far as I'm concerned.

The defense is sixth in yards and 13th in scoring. They'd be top ten if not for the offense in the Bears game. They're good to above average.

The offense is 27th in scoring and only Jacksonville has fewer touchdowns. They have fantasies about being average.

stop it. that was not a #1 defense last year. i dont care what the numbers said. that was no where near the best defense in the league last year.

i agree that the offense is still pretty bad. 2 games in a row that settled for 4 field goals. not gonna win to many games against good teams settling for field goals.

i think they need to rethink their redzone offense. its always a struggle once they hit the 10 yard line.

as for the defense. sure the numbers are ok, but they not very good. they let Flacco march right down the field yesterday to tie that game. that arent getting to the qb and yesterdays game made it 5 of 6 games without a take away.

Tell me about it; on the ratbirds td drive we had them in like a third and 15 and ike gave a 16 yards cushion, it was the most ridiculous thing that I have ever seen.

To say Flacco is not a REAL QB is rediculous. Did you watch him in the playoffs last year, he was great in that run. He is a superbowl MVP. He has a very good playoff record. He has very good and very fast receivers who also have decent size.

The way I saw the game, the defnese gave up 13 points and held them to a FG after the offense turned it over. On that last drive, the Ravens were playing 4 downs and moved the ball. The defense did not allow a quick strike in that situation and that was the way to play it, a quick strike score would have most likely allowed them to get the ball back again, only needing a score to win.

Every team in the league allows those kind of drives, even Seattle. I watch a lot of games and everything that people on here complain about can be applied to every team. Bottom line, Steelers don't give up a lot of points and that's the highest priority you can ask of any defense.

They're good to average. Defense is about not giving up points. They've done that this year against most of the offenses they've faced. They aren't the kind of championship defense we're used to seeing so it's hard to take.

But have we really gotten so used to seeing an offense that can't score in the red zone and can't protect the ball that people blame a decent (certainly not great) defense for the losses the offense is creating? The offense had several opportunities to put the Ravens away and didn't do that. You can't do that in today's game. The game is set up for teams to move the ball and score and we're worse at it than two or three teams in the league.

Our defense might not be good enough to win Super Bowls but our offense can barely win games.

The defense is what it has been for yrs. Which is average. It is built to concede FG's. That is a fact. Great QB's carve it up all day long. There is no way in hell this D can stop a team at the end of a game. They just have to pray the other team doesn't score a TD. Yesterday, they did and that is scheme and lack of talent. Tackle the catch, blah blah blah. Luckily, we had the ball last and Suisham was once again money.

Did you forget about the bears scoring 40 points on this D, and the vikes scoring 34 points against them, there are some teams left on our schedule like the lions and packers that can light up the scoreboard, so this defense only seems to keep the scores down against teams that don't score a lot of points anyway, in my view they can keep the score low, but only against low scoring offenses.......

Did you forget that half the points the Bears scored were given to them by the offense? Vikings average 25 a game and that was one off-day so far for the defense but not that off.

You cannot win in the NFL in 2013 if you can't score touchdowns. Most of our problems are caused by the offense.

Nope but you're forgetting how many points the offense gave away. I also said 4 out of 6 games they gave 20 or less points up, not every game, if you expect teams to never be off their game a little, you are going to be disappointment. They have also kept every QB in check except Dalton and he hardly lit them up, threw for 285 yards, pretty pedestrian by todays standards.

The defense is fine. It still needs work, but it's a good defense.

It's as I have said, as long as the offense isn't running around turning the d*mned ball over every few minutes, and giving the defense 20-30 yards to defend, then the Steelers will win. The last 2 games have proven that.

The offense is mediocre. The O-Line played better, yesterday, but they still need improvement.

The offense is definitely the weak link. They've been having problems in the Red Zone since Arians was here...

The offense has turned the ball over once in the last two weeks. The defense has also limited the big plays these last two weeks that they gave up during the Vikings game. Certainly there is room for improvement, but both offense-over the last 3 weeks- and defense-over last two weeks- have shown improvement. So I was a bit surprised, as were others, of the timing of this thread.
