Are they planning on him playing actual lb or just doing special teams again? Is he suddenly a monster after getting released earlier this year?

Probably both, but I'd say definitely for special teams help.

Doubtful. He did have an ankle injury during preseason, so that screwed his hopes of making the roster.

I think this move speaks volumes as to where the Steelers are as an organization. This is the second time this year they are bringing back a player they deemed to move on from. Actually, it's the fourth time, Gay and Spaeth included. What bothers me, they should be cherry picking talent from other teams via the practice squad. We already know that they didn't think Sly was up to the standard, why not try some new blood???

found in another forum and sum it up my thinking

They did. His name was Kion Wilson. The part about thinking he wasn't up to standard is a deductive leap. Who are they going to cherry pick specifically?

    Hate him!

But srs, sometimes I just don't understand this team. Not that they signed SS after releasing him but that they have now released Wilson. Some of us couldn't understand why they were starting Wilson over Williams after Foote got injured and now they are releasing him and signing SS back to the team? I know they said Wilson had a hamstring issue during the Vikings game but he was already back practicing with the team yesterday so it must not be too bad.

I mean i'm glad they are "shaking things up" a bit but this seems strange to me.

sly was released because he was hurt and now Wilson was released because he was hurt and sly is healthy. I would have to think sly had a good chance at starting before wheaton took him out. he was playing better then I had seen him before this preseason.

I have to wonder about carter and worilds though. butler said all the LB'ers know all the LB'er spots, so why don't they ever play them? nothing against Williams, but just wondered. carter is a 3rd year guy. oh well, more mysteries of the universe.

I'm not sure about starting, but from what i saw of him he looked pretty good before preseason. I even commented about it in another thread back then when they were having backs on backers drills.

Maybe Williams just wasn't ready at the time and Wilson was, more or less, but it just seems odd to me that they picked Wilson to start over Williams and now he's being released. His injury doesn't appear to be too severe if he was at practice yesterday, albeit partial practice. Maybe it's as simple as you say mac but i'm not 100% sure.

Are we currently having an issue evaluating talent?

This explanation is far too rational and sensible for my taste. Are you sure it isn't Tomlin's fault in at least some way?

I just think it's one of those nagging injuries for Wilson and we have zero depth. sly's was a nagging ankle injury at the time and has had ample time to heal. he knows what he's doing and was a good ST's player anyway.

Wilson started because he has been through 4 camps and on an active roster some. that gave him a little edge over Williams at the time. I liked Wilson. he is more a wrap up tackler, instead of a thumper. he's a good tackler also. bad timing for this type of injury is all it is I still think, and sly was sitting there ready.

I don't get the point of this move. They had clearly moved on from Sly and his play on special teams didn't seem to stand out. Other than trying to get a healthy guy on the roster which someone mentioned above, I don't support this and I was a big fan, obviously, of Sly when we first drafted him.

they brought sly back at a reduced rate before camp. he was having probably his best camp ever. he would have been foote's backup minimum if he hadn't gotten hurt and couldn't practice.

the other 3 or even 4 guys if you count McFadden were looking good too. garvin, williams and Wilson and they had been practicing when sly couldn't. I don't think there will be a big difference with sly over Wilson or visa versa. one is just healthy right now, and garvin is learning Timmons side.
