That article makes a lot of sense to me. A lot of the me me generation is in effect right now and it shows all around, not only on the Steelers team, other teams and in every day life. I reallly don't know what changed a lot of young peoples thinking, guess it has something to do with the world we life in today with all the terrorism, lack of jobs etc.... Maybe people just want to grab all the gusto they can get before things catch up with them.

Alternatively, it's an entirely predictable response to the neoliberalist ideology that's been with us since the 1980s. But as this isn't a board for discussing such things, I'll move on.

I'm not sure it's right to say that Greene saw this coming. What he was commenting on was something that was happening in Pittsburgh, but is happening in every team where contracts are up for negotiation with starters. This in itself doesn't translate into 0-4. Heck, the Cowboys of the 1990s were a team full of egotistical stars, but they weren't exactly shoddy.

But wasn't Joe one of our scouts, and if it is true we have a lack of talent, doesn't that fall somewhat on the scouts? Unless all the choices were spoiled rich kids just out for money, which I don't believe.

I don't know, sounds to me like another old guy complaining about how the younger generation is lazier, greedier, more selfish than in his day.

Read a baseball history book a few yrs ago, each chapter represented a decade in baseball history going back to the 1870's. in each chapter, the author included a quote from an older ex-player making the same complaint as Mean Joe about the new guys. Players are always in in for the money, that's why they jump leagues as they did in the '80s, '60s, 40's and '20s. This is they formed player associations in the '50s and why they strike.

Greed and self interest are as old as mankind.

It is getting harder to relate with younger generations on just about anything imaginable anymore... Can't blame him, but would love to hear his choice of words during his parting.

I'll add a couple of other examples, besides Wallace and Sanders with their contract distractions and Clark with his ESPN auditions, that could indicate that our team is not as focused as it should be on football. How about Troy and his Head & Shoulders commercials? Woodley seems pretty enamored with the spotlight himself hanging with rapsters and so forth. Jarvis Jones had a contract with Subway before he played an NFL snap for crying out loud. It's more than just about football these days and I'm sure that sticks in the crawl of a football traditionalist like MJG.

How about Joe Greene and his Coke commercials?

Did he do more than one? It seems that Troy has a different one every month.

Don't forget all the Miller Lite commercials, less filling taste great arguments. Not sure if Mean Joe was in them but my point it, a lot of players have always partaken in commercials. For al we know, these things are filmed during the off season.

Was he talking about the players specifically or the organization? What I took away from it was some critical comments about how the Rooney's are starting to care about the business isde more now than they used to. I made the comment before that one of the reason's they forced BA out was about the money and not hosting playoff games. Someons said they didn't think the Rooney's would make decisions based on what is good for Pittsburgh business but I was referring to any revenue generated by hosting a game or two. Isn't that money that the team keeps and doesn't go towards the league's community pot?

It also got me thinking about how the family had to diversify in light of the tax situation and they were potentially losing controlling interest in the team. When you have other people to keep happy it can't always be just the status quo because it has always worked. Shareholders can force you make decisions you don't want and change things before you are ready. So I can see the Rooney's being more concerned with the business side than ever before if there is a chance they lose control of the business.

He likely made more money on that commercial than he did under contract with the Steelers.

I don't know if Greene was necessarily upset about such endorsement deals. That's all fine as long as the player shows up to play. Visa and Papa Johns commercials are in no way hurting Peyton Manning's performance.

What he seemed to be objecting to is players allowing the focus on money and peripheral things to affect their performance. Indeed, with these a ot of these guys, and I'm not just talking about the Steelers, they're making millions...so what is the incentive?

You're right, I think - and this is also why it doesn't make sense to level this at the Steelers alone.

I could be wrong but I'm guessing Troy films all those commercials in the offseason and they release them throughout the year.

Given how long they take to shoot, I would be very surprised if he had time to do them at any other point in the year.

Got that right. I'm 33... and I can barely relate to my nephews who are 13-16 at all. They're in to the crazy hair, my little pony (brony) crap, GMod, duck faces, so much social media that when they make a post, it doesn't even make sense to me. At least when I was 15, my parents understood me and could relate and teach me. It's a whole different world out there today. Social media has changed work ethic, morals, keeping things to yourself, knowing when and when not to share, privacy boundaries gone, bullying, greed. It doesn't stop there.

The players young on the NFL field today are a complete embarrassment when placed next to the likes of Ward, Miller, Bettis, Troy.
