Why exactly is our OL so bad?

And we no longer have Colon to smother and hump him...

I like colon better at guard than Foster...he has a nasty disposition.

next year i would play pouncey left guard velasco at center decastro right guard adams right takle , if we manage to pick a stud left tackle , that's would be a great oline .

We won 2 Super Bowls without great, or very good, lines, so, they (good='we', bad = 'they') ignore the OL pretty much.

I'd think if we had totally average players across the line, we'd be in the play-offs for sure, and be a top contender.

I beg to differ in one respect: the line in 2005 was pretty good.

How much do the Steelers miss Colon? Certainly, Ben does. He and Colon were pretty close. And I know the players know that player movement is just business. But I sense that Ben's poor play is maybe due to the turnover in personnel. Ben was pretty close to Santonio and Wallace and Colon. And then he also lost Arians. I'm not saying its a talent dropoff issue, but an unhappiness issue.

Seriously bothersome that our best O lineman could be the UDFA we just lucked into because we had to. He's Good enough that down "yonder" they insured him for 2 mil and a 2nd rounder.

Gilbert, have him play guard or something on the sideline, whatever, but the man is a human turnstile. Sheesh

Max and Willie available? (threw up a little in my mouth),

we should have picked up reid fragel from the cincy ps and dump wimpher before the titans , we would have save d the money and have a beter left tackle to groom , but the front office ha s no clue about lineman

:this!: I also wonder how strong these guys are. I see that all of them get bulled rushed way to easily, with Gilbert and Adams the worst of the bunch, but also seen Pouncy and Foster do the same.

During the 70's heydays most of the Steeler offensive lineman could bench press 500 lbs. I know they were probably on roids, but today's offensive lineman look bigger, but slower, and definitely weaker.

I not sure anyone one of them could bench press 500 lbs today.
They all look like they get man handled at times.

    I just saying.

Let's wait and see what Velasco can do before we pencil him in as the starting center. I admit pouncey hasn't been playing up to par so far but we do know what he has from his body of work.

We're all sick of mucking the line. Foster can keep Gilbert from falling on anyone on sideline.
    He's a quality BU. Keeper
Gilbert, OK for BU but even that's on the bubble.

I still can't believed we lucked into Velasco

For the most part, this sums it up in my opinion. I would go a bit further and say that Pouncey and DD are the only 2 linemen on our current roster that fit what we want to do in terms of running a ZBS. With our strongest run blocking T on the left side, I think we should run more traditional power to the left behind Foster going straight ahead and DD pulling to find the LB plugging the hole. With Velasco at center, I think this is an even more appropriate matching of talent to scheme.

One thing that's sad to say, but I think our pass protection may actually improve with Velasco instead of Pouncey. Pouncey was very good (usually) at getting out in front of run plays and making second level blocks, but struggled mightily when pass protecting against big guys coming right up his face. He gave up a LOT of pressure in Ben's face.

we got a gift right off the bat, so TY titans. we did drive down twice and scored once.

the fumble by redman was from the second bad handoff from a vet not the young line. even the stat people changed it to ben's fault.

this game could have been tied at the end if we stuffed that one in and 9 times out of 10 we would have at that spot. a hole was there.

ben not making the open throw, at certain time's led to at least one sack and real possibly two. again he has to trust the play design and throw the ball.

there were also cut back lanes that redman didn't choose properly, so i'm not putting that on the O-line either, but it looked like they didn't do their jobs.

i'm not going to put all the blame on this young O-line, because a couple of vets missed what their job was.

we were not as far off from being competitive in this game as some are making it out to be. perfect? no, but there were breakdowns that we really knew were going to happen with such a young offense, but the bad part was, the young guys didn't make all the mistakes. the vets did.

velasco could have quite a calming effect on this line. remember embernate was supposed to be a big help at guard. losing this kid didn't help. next the guy that was taking a lot of those guard and canter snaps got hurt too. (Cheadle). the next guy up can't get those snaps back.

we lost our all pro center. not easy to make up. i'll bet if tenn. did, they wouldn't be walking away with a win as easy.

there were some problems, but most can be fixed and the vets need to not add to these problems.

we are not as far off as some think, of playing good enough football to win.

I think it is unrealistic to think we were going to come out and score 30 points right off the bat with so many injuries to players we were going to be counting on. ( pouncey, bell, heath, cortez) < that's some pretty key missing componants for any team to overcome. add mistakes by some key vets and it snowballed. we were still close to winning this game and that is a positive.

    I think i'm done now.
