That was a good game. The better have Foles ready though because Vick won't make it to week 4 taking those hits.

Well the Skins were missing TONS of tackles but I'm with you in wondering about the power run game though. I just don't think that the NFL can be revolutionized because coordinators have always found a way to stop things. It's not just offensive schemes that have been called revolutionary though if you think about it. Think about the Tampa 2 which is really just a rip off of our defense from the 70s. Now any qb in football can beat it but at the time it was considered revolutionary. Me and my buddy were actually talking about this and we were saying that we think the NFL will move away from power running for a while and then some old school coach will come in and install a power running game and then everyone will act like he's an innovator. I will say though that Dick Lebeau agrees with you and he said he DOESN'T think it's a gimmick but Tomlin said he DOES think it won't last because it's gonna get qbs hurt. That's my opinion too. Either way though I think a dink and dunk offense would be the best defense against it because if they can't take the field they can't run that high powered offense. I would like to see them play the pats really because they run that kind of offense really efficiently.

If Ben was able to lead the offense to victory at the end vs the Broncos, Cowboys, and Bengals instead of throwing game ending INT's last season the team's record would had been 11-5. Over the past 8 or 9 years the Steelers depended on Ben to deliver in crunch time. It appears that Ben is never going to lead an offense that can produce a lot of points. That means that games will continue to be close.

System + Bellicheck is more important than Brady tbh. They made Matt freaking Cassel look like a franchise QB ...

We have indeed mortgaged our future for SBs. We won 2, played another and we were all happy. Players deserved to get paid and the FO tried to keep as many top talent as possible.

Due to the cap there just isn't enough money in todays market for such players so Omar & Co. borrowed from tomorrow to pay for today. The bill is coming due>

In 2014 we already have 38 players under contract for 119 Mil. There is already 4.5 mil in dead money so we're est at 124 mil and the projected cap for 2014 is 125 mil.

Remember, this is 38 players and we need to add 13 more to complete the rule of 51. Now stop and think about who we need to extend and add!!!!

Player that eat the biggest chunks of cap in 2014.

    Ben-------------- 18.9 mil
    Woodley------------ 13.5 mil
    Timmons----------11.8 mil
    Troy----------------10.8 mil
    Ike-----------------10.4 mil
    AB-------------------- 8.5 mil
Heath---------------8 mil *** he just redid his contract so his 2014 cap is now higher and guaranteed
    Pouncey-------------4.6 mil

These are the major players that are NOT under contract for next year:
Clark, Kiesel, Sanders, Cotchery, F.Jones, Redman, Dwyer, LSH, Hood, Woods, and Woirlds (I'm likely missing 1 or 2 others).

Who do we keep and where do we get the cap room to keep them with??

Good question. I have no answers and I believe the FO is in the process of analyzing the players, and draft prospects and low level UFA from other teams. Hopefully the cap rises to give us some relief.

    My thinking is as follows-
Clark- Gone, I like him but even at vet min we can't afford him and it is time to get younger
Kiesel- Gone, Sad as he's one of my favorites but youth is here.
Sanders- Gone, he's auditioning for that Fat new deal and we can't match it, Wheaton is better any ways.
Cotchery-Gone, he's playing well but J. Brown will be on the 53 next season in his place.
Hood-Extended but not at the Huge FA contract he once thought
Woods-Extended to a deal slightly lowed than the McLendon deal.
Worilds- just don't know yet- could go either way
Felix Jones- if he does well he'll be back, if not, bye bye
LSH- If he heals ok they'll bring him back
Redman/Dwyer- they both may very well be gone. Forget about how they aren't the best fit for the outside blocking scheme. Truth is Fumbles are their demise.

Caj - I wouldn't be surprised if we are seeing the last year for either Troy or Ike in a Steelers uniform. Sucks, but like you said, the bill for 3 SB appearances is coming due.

Right, if you look at the cap savings for a few of those guys...it doesn't look good.

    @Cajun- Heath's guarantee next year is $3,446,500.

Well, one of them his arm was hit but don't mind that, still all on Ben, bad Ben bad. And if he threw it to a wide open Heath (that he may or may not have even seen, much easier for you sitting on your couch then for Ben with people in his way and trying to kill him) but if he had hit Heath would he have then sprinted into the endzone that speedy devil???? Or lets just ignore that Wallace didn't even attempt to break up that pass or fight for the ball. Something that our new WR coach says every WR should do, if you can't catch it, make sure no one else can. Fact is, Mendys fumble was huge and changed the direction of the game. I'm not pinning the loss on Mendy (it was a great hit after all) but please, lets not act like it was insignificant.

I don't know the specifics----- HELP TTF!!! --- but didn't Troy redo his deal turning salary in bonus thus creating TOO much dead money to cut him this year and I think next year also. I have thought for a while they would replace troy & clark in successive years and not the same year. Anything can happen though.

About Ike- His 2014 cap charge is 10 mil, 7 mil of which is base. Because we don't have anyone who can replace him even as the #2 CB we may be forced to keep him. He will most likely get an extension turning salary into bonus giving us some help.

TTF- You say Heath's guarantee in 2014 is 3.4 mil. I saw on the depot before he re-did his contract his cap charge was already 7.96 mil. Is his NEW 2014 cap charge now 11.4 mil? The report said of his new deal he got no more money and no more years, just converted salary to bonus and deferred that to future year(s).

Food for thought. Foster has a 2014 cap charge of 2 mil and Beechum is playing a lot better.

Plenty of blame to go around. Mendenhall's fumble was the death nail, but Clay Matthews made one hell of a play. It took 4,000 drops by the GB WRs to make the defense look decent. Pick 6 INT wasn't on Ben, but made all the difference in the world. On the next to last offensive play Ben missed a WIDE OPEN Mendenhall out of the backfield for an EASY, EASY, EASY 15 yards and a 1st down in favor of forcing the ball to Wallace.

Overall the Steelers played a mediocre game. Could've been better, could've been worse. I think the Packers were just flat out a better team and played a better game. Give credit where it is due.

I would agree with this, except for one thing: the rules simply do not (or won't in the future) favor defenses making ANY adjustments. How much you wanna bet the NFL makes hits BELOW the knee illegal for 2014? They're already considering it. The college game is coming to the NFL. Like it or not. Rosters are going to get younger; players will become expendable after 4-5 seasons. There will be high turnover rate. Emphasis on YOUTH and SPEED. College coaches with college pedigrees and game plans, as well as the ability to relate to younger players, will likely become the norm. Just look at how many rookies are now making an impact in this sport. Look for more and more rookies to not only be starters, but stars.

Does anyone else want to see all this college crap fall on it's face? I don't get the appeal of turning the NFL into a college game, I like my football the way it is, been enough changes. And considering that GB kept the read option in check already, I bet it doesn't take the league by storm. Teams were visiting colleges during the off season to learn how to defend it. Of course, Kaepernick is pretty damn good in the pocket too and passed for like 400 yards but I'm willing to bet that players like that don't grow on trees.

You can make all the excuses for that int (pick 6) but the fact is it was actually more detrimental to the outcome of the game - a free td. Mendy didn't simply fumble, he got rocked as soon as he got the ball. Very few RBs hod on to that ball getting rocked by clay. Just like bens arm getting hit led to the int. I am tired of people putting the entire loss on that fumble.

Troy was extended in 2011. His contract included a 7,912,500 signing bonus, making the dead money hit too large last year and this year. Next year, the last remaining year of his contract, the dead money charge is only $2.6 Mil where as the cap savings to part ways with him is $8.25 Mil. I'm not saying the team will do that, nor am I advocating they do. I'm just pointing out that it's a possiblility from a cap standpoint, and like you said, anything's possible.

You're probably right about extending him. If he was cut though, his '14 dead money hit would be $3.45Mil, where as the savings would be $7Mil.

His guarantee after restructuring is 3.4 Mil and change. Here's the breakdown I posted yesterday:

Where did I say that the entire loss was do to that fumble? I said it was significant and it was, deny it all you want, still was. And Bens arm being hit is not an excuse, it's a fact. I also said that Mendys fumble was a result of a good hit, I'm not even sure you read my post.

I don't either, really. But this is the trend I am seeing. YOUTH and SPEED. And heck: even Nike is on the verge of giving all the NFL teams stupid-looking college uniforms.

I'm with both of you guys. I want to see the sophisticated schemes and enjoy watching a vet qb drop back and pick a d apart. On the flip side I wanna see DC's creating pressure and sacking qb's and wreaking havoc in the backfield. The point is I just wanna see some of the best football minds in the world playing as PROS and not amateurs.

There is an interesting stat that teams that get a pick 6 are undefeated in super bowls. 11-0, I think.

Pick 6 is devastating when two top teams are playing.
