Corner back has already become a position Pittsburgh has issues struggling. Time will tell with Daylen Everette but Peezy Jr, by all metrics, is a home run pick by Pittsburgh's standards. You don't let Corners in their prime be traded for lottery tickets.


The only massive exception is if there is a Patrick Surtain II, Jalen Ramsey or Patrick Peterson level corner in this class. Leonard Moore from Notre Dame is quite good but gambles far too often in Zone Coverage while his overall run support pales in comparison to corners such as Mansoor Delane and Jermod McCoy.

 

How does having those quarterbacks matter?

Porter is worth more than just a first-round pick, so no, they shouldn't be trading him and a one just because they think the other team will pick high. As you said, there are too many variables to make such a move now.

I am the last person to advocate for trading a proven young player for draft picks. But if Arch Manning ends up being a legit 15 year franchise quarterback, then it's a huge payoff. The risk is high, but the reward could be a couple of more Super bowl titles and a decade of winning football.

By the way, it is a lot easier to find star defensive backs than it is franchise quarterbacks. Think of the DBs the Steelers have passed on to draft Tackles. (Christian Gonzalez, Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, Dillon Theineman)

 

Don't remind me. When we traded up in 2023 I had absolutely no doubt it was to take Gonzalez only to be smacked across the head with a two by four when we took Broderick Freaking Jones. But incredibly the next year no DB's were taken before our pick. I couldn't believe our good luck was it going to be Mitchell or Dejean that we picked? Nah it was Troy F who is looking like an average OT instead of the first team All Pro DB's we passed on. Then this year needing a true free Safety, incredibly a plug and play starter for the next decade fell into our laps. But no we took a big risk on an OT who had never seen a football until 4 years ago. We could have had by far the best secondary in the NFL with wise drafting instead of 2 question marks at OT and the third one already kicked to the curb.

 

People need to stop writing that the Steelers passed on Gonzalez to take Jones. The Patriots wanted Gonzalez. There is no way they were making that trade with the Steelers without assurances that Pittsburgh wasn't going to take their guy. If the Steelers don't give them that, the Patriots don't make the deal and the Steelers still don't get Gonzalez.

Of course, I agree with you on the rest. Passing on Thieneman for Iheanachor looks like a terrible decision, just as some of the other times they recently passed on stud corners.

 

I didn't know the behind the scenes deals that were going on on draft night in 2023. All I knew from watching at home was that our pick was on the clock and Christian Gonzalez was still available.

 

I don't know that for a fact, but everything I heard and read at the time indicated that Gonzalez was the Patriots' target.

At the time of the pick, I was right there with you. I wanted Gonzalez. It was after the Patriots took him that I saw that it was likely never the Steelers' intent or option.

 

vegasinsider currently has steelers as 11th longest odds of winning the super bowl. If the season plays out that way, we get the 11th overall pick in 2027. Then our 1st and JPJ might get us into #10 overall. Historically, QBs taken in the first ten picks have a 50% chance of being a franchise QB. Might work....

 

Let me digress a bit here. Firstly, Arch Manning is not going to be a franchise QB. So far from what I have seen over the last 2 years, he does not impress me to add the "franchise" tag. Forget the hoopla around him as it is all smoke and mirrors. These pundits are rarely right with their assessments. Secondly, I wouldn't want him either simply because he would bring the Manning circus to town and that is not something the Steelers would need, nor would the fans. Lastly, good DB's are tough to find but I believe they are easier than the franchise QB. Seeing that there are 2 corners to a defense your chances are 50% for a good one as opposed to just one QB per offense. Top tier QB's are more scarce IMO than top tier DB's. But I can live with it either way.

As for Porter, if they could get a 1 for him, I would take it in a heartbeat! He is still not a top DB IMO. Way to many "handsy" PI's for me. Doesn't tackle well either. Granted, he is getting better, but I'd take the No 1 for him right now. This means his circus leaves town along with his father! That is future draft capital that could come in handy by trading that pick up or down in a package. You can never have enough high draft picks either.

Besides, if the Steelers were to draft Manning, what do you do with the 2 young guys you have waiting in the wings. All of that effort would be lost and you still would not know if you are sitting on the next franchise QB from those 2.

The things you are saying about Arch are the same things people said about Eli coming out of Ole Miss.

I'm not sure I am buying that the Mannings create a circus wherever they go. Peyton and Eli were both very professional. If you are talking about the TV shows and commercials, that just comes with fame. I don't think either one ever caused a distraction, outside of Eli not wanting to play for the Chargers.

 

Howard and Allar both have potential and making a trade like this would be another year without finding out what that potential is. At some point, we are looking at losing them without ever testing them.

 

How is passing on Thieneman for Iheanachor a terrible decision? They might have their future RT.

 

People forget that Arch Manning still has a year of eligibility left in college after this season. The money that Texas would pay him to stay would be too much for him to turn down. That is why college QB's are suing to stay in college for as long as they can. Carson Beck made 7 million his last year in college and will make 2.5 million his rookie year for the Cardinals. These QB's aren't declaring for the draft until they have to.

 

Even if Arch comes out the Steelers won't have a chance to get him, there will be plenty of other QBs in the 2027 draft.
