Broderick Jones says

I recall a GM long time ago said that most drafts have only about 12-15 players that are true top talents with few negatives. After that the negatives (flaws) start stacking up on players. I suppose it's a glass half empty/full view. Look close enough and you can find things to be pessimistic/optimistic about.

 

Jones will complain next that if they just tried him at long snapper he would be in the HOF now

 

But we also gave up a 4th round so we basically got a mid to late 6th round pick and roughly 70-80 points on a draft value chart for him. 70-80 points is equivalent to a early to mid round 4th.

ETA: Let's say for the sake of discussion, that we and the Cowboys end up in the middle of the pack for the 2027 draft.

Cowboys 3rd round pick = 200 points
Cowboys 6th round pick = 13 points
Our 4th round pick = 70 points

Net difference is 143 points which is equivalent to late 3rd round pick. "On paper", if the Cowboys record is better than ours, it's a bad trade, if our record is better then it's a good trade. But the key to it all is what Jones ends up being.

This is true but the other side of the coin is this ..... the O-line, more than any other position group, needs time together to gel into a cohesive unit. Juggling them is not a good idea. Maybe they were juggled because they could not establish themselves, and maybe they were juggled by a coaching staff who didn't know how to use the talent at hand?

 

I had really high hopes for him. He might do well in Dallas, for whatever reason their line has been consistently good for a while.

 

That feels like a really accurate statement.

I also figure that in most drafts after like the first dozen picks or so, you are looking at taking the 4th or 5th OT off the board. Good chance you are taking the 20-25% that doesn't succeed at that point. But what are you gonna do? It is the Parcell's planet theory. There are just only so many human beings large enough and mobile enough to even attempt to play OT in the NFL. When you have a chance to take a chance on one, you basically have to do it no matter what.

Dallas fans didn't like the Broderick Jones trade. Here's some comments off the Dallas Cowboys message board:

1. Problem is we addressed a problem with another problem.

1. we could probably have had a player just like this, for nothing, tonight.

1. This player should have gone for a straight sixth. At best.

1. In 11 games last season, Jones surrendered 23 pressures and six sacks and was graded with a 59 in pass protection and a career-low 50.6 in run-blocking. Jones did not look to be improving this preseason, either, as he allowed five pressures, three sacks and posted similar PFF grades in three contests.

1. If he were to fail it, and he won’t because the team decides, I imagine the Steelers would cut him tonight

1. An offseason without dumb moves was just too good to be true

1. I am hoping that Dallas comes to their senses on this desperation trade and Jones does not pass his physical. The 2027 draft is loaded and Dallas does not have that many draft picks. Our draft next year is now:
   1, 2, 4, 6

I think part of it is also that the league is always desperate for OL (because you need 5 starters). So even half-decent guys can play somewhere on the line.

 

These are all reasonable concerns for them IMO.

I wonder how many of them are forgetting that they get our 4th next year too. So it's not a 3rd and 6th for Jones. It's trading down from the 3rd to the 4th (probably 15-20 spots) and a 6th for Jones.

I don't think Jones is going to work out, so I think we won the deal. But trading down a little for a high pedigree OT who has great measurable isn't terrible.

The value of the 6th is pretty small. The commenter there that said he was only worth a 6th is just wrong. There's always an OL tax because the league is desperate for playable OL. And while I don't think Jones has been good, he is playable in the NFL. And still has room to get better.

 

LOL.... I think this thread may be revisited next year or the year after if Broderick Jones spends this season lifting and eating to regain his size and strength.

No Idea why Dallas traded for him, because he has only 1 year left on his contract and is no where ready to play. Steelers basically got something for nothing, because this year Jones is going to be completely worthless, and next year when he may be able to get back into shape he will be a free agent.
